Newman with Ned Dowd ("Ogie Ogilthorpe", and screenwriter Nancy Dowd's bro), in Syracuse garb.The AHL's Syracuse Crunch will "retire" jersey number 7 for the season, made immortal by Paul Newman's Reggie Dunlop in 1978's Slap Shot. Duh.
For the uninitiated, Syracuse was home to the fictional Bulldogs of the just-as-fictional Federal Hockey League, whom (you guessed it) fictional Player/Coach Dunlop's Charlestown Chiefs "defeated" (actually, it was quite different), becoming league champions.
A very cool gesture by the club with the very worst name...and logo...in all of sport.
