Call it a D-Vo renaissance: Panthers down Flyers 4-2

Flyers vs Panthers coverage          Broad Street Hockey

Yet another shorthanded goal by Radek Dvorak allowed Florida to escape with an insanely hard-fought win over a Philadelphia team which outplayed the home club - badly - in the first thirty minutes.

It was ugly: the Cats held the offensive zone time over their opponents by a wide margin over a majority of the first period, but the far larger Flyers stayed in - and ultimately dominating - a large portion of the game, utilizing a breakdown in front of Panthers netminder Scott Clemmensen to take the lead on an Aron Asham goal.

Nathan Horton's redirection in the second tied the game at two, but the big moment came late in the third, as Michael Frolik, on a penalty kill, spun around just inside the offensive zone, leaving the puck for a smoking Dvorak, beating Flyers goaltender Ray Emery for the eventual winner. Steven Reinprecht, fresh from a faceoff, scored his first of the year on an empty net to seal it for the Cats.

Quick notes: Clemmensen had a few slow moments, but otherwise held the fort with confidence. It's obvious he wants to contribute. The same can be said for Dominic Moore, who showed up in a big way, all over the ice. Rostislav Olesz was dominant all night, making the most of his opportunity on the second line. He was hungry. Pete DeBoer showed signs of constipation during the first thirty minutes. Considering the end result, he doesn't like Pepto-Bismal. The defense tightened up considerably in the third. David Booth was everywhere, shooting at anything. Keith Ballard looked great - the night's best defenseman (with Dmitry Kulikov coming in a close second) throwing his body in every direction.

All in all, we witnessed two distinct games tonight; after the first, you'd have been committed for believing the Cats would walk tall with a victory. But they earned it - not on PHI breakdowns - but a collective effort.

A good portion of this evening would have had anyone believing otherwise…but you’re dead on.

Hats off for the Cats on the impressive win. Defense looked solid, Devo & Rusty played with great intensity, Clemmy solid in net.

But my favorite minute of the game was Cambell & Allen defending the colors against challengers from the bullies of broad street.

1st- Whale, love the changing of the "where rats, …. and (insert former panther “great) here” lives on. it seems as though you’ll never be running out of those guys.

2nd- didnt get to see the game, but extremely happy with a win over philly, funny our two wins come over supposed cup contenders.

3rd- glad to see Moore make an impression and Rusty keep up the strong play.

No…I have an endless supply of colorful names from a less-colorful past.

We all thought this was going to be a complete disaster

… after the first period. The Cats were a mess that whole first. I do give them points for not going down by four or five goals in the first half. At the very least, when they couldn’t get the puck out of their own end, they kept it out of the net.

Clemmensen looked a bit shaky, but it was his first start, and he missed almost two weeks.

Barky deserved that first star and more for singlehandedly turning that game around. He scored that shortie and all of a sudden, the whole team starting playing with confidence. Yeah, they got pinned in their end a couple more times as the Flyers tried desperately for the equalizer. But they got the puck out and put together a good play to get the empty net goal. Yeah, Olesz could have dumped it, but Reinprecht got around the defender and Olesz got him the puck. If it wasn’t for that, we likely would have been in OT shortly after.

Let’s hope we see that team against the Sabres on Wednesday and not the one that was out in the first period.

We were talking about leaving after 20, but the Panthers woke up in the second.
