As if the Panthers didn't already have one large potential record looming over their shoulders (that of setting the modern futility mark of most consecutive seasons without playoff action), tonight presents yet another: New Jersey's Martin Brodeur sitting one shutout away from the all-time record.

Of course, the Cats are on the business end of it in Newark after going goal-less in Columbus on Wednesday.

Scott Clemmensen gets the net for Florida against his former tribe, while formerly hot point producers Nathan Horton and Stephen Weiss try to climb their way out of a two-game point slump. Collectively the Cats are 1-5-4 in their past ten.

Brodeur has five career shutouts against the Panthers. No, there aren't many positives leading into this one, but we'll watch because that's what we do.

Anyone else have about 14 hours of work to cram in before the puck drops?

Break Out Game

This is a great opportunity to break out and get on a run. Clemmy is facing his team that spited him last year while Brodeur and the Devils are thinking they got an easy go of if tonight. Maybe in all the Brodeur-Shutout hoopla the Cats can catch them napping and if our hitters lay some checks down on guys like Parise, Rolston, Zajac, Elias, Bergfors they really don’t have much to fall back other than Langenbrunner who is only one dude.

We need Patches O’Houlihan from Dodgeball to get the Cats riled up via demeaning yelling and wrench throwing! “Get ANGRY!!!”

It’s a common misconception that Clemmensen was spited last season, but it was just the nature of the business. When Brodeur came back from his injury, either he or Weekes needed to be sent down, and only Clemmensen could have been without having to clear waivers. It was unfortunate, but it was the only decision that could have been made.

Once the season was done, Scott had earned the right to try for a starting job somewhere, so he wasn’t made an offer.

I can’t say whether Clemmer feels spited by it all, but he seemed to understand that it wasn’t anything personal.

Regardless, I think he’ll get a good reception by the crowd as all of us fans remember and respect what he did for the team last year.

As to overlooking the Panthers, I think the Devils have done a good job of not overlooking teams this season. Should be a good game as the Cats always play the Devils tough.

Good luck, but don’t think laying a few checks on Parise is going to slow him down!

Yeah, I know what you mean, and I am sure everyone understands that most decisions came from the business perspective. It still felt wrong though, for him to carry the team and then be dumped back to the AHL like that. I don’t know if it was wrong or not but it certainly felt like that when it happened. All that to say Clemmer is probably going to be hyped for the game and hopefully that will spark that solid goaltending that he showed off last year.

And as for Parise, I agree, he is a stud but the alternative of letting him run free could be…well just plain outright disastrous :(

Seriously, I’m only hoping they score tonight. That’s it. If they get a point, it’s a bonus. I’m not even thinking about a win.
