Panthers' Weiss plays role of uber-hero: hat trick and SO winner against Avalanche 6-5

Not two, not three, but four 2-goal leads were surrendered by Florida en route to a circus-like shootout finish over Colorado. It was a beautiful finish, but anyone who's watched this club recently couldn't be blamed for expecting the worst.

The Cats' Stephen Weiss, who has looked confident and  all year, banged home a natural hat trick, and capped it with the shootout winner as the eighth participant of the extra- extra- extra period. Why his coach decided to not use him earlier? No idea.

Scott Clemmensen (29 saves) - facing his predecessor in net - stopped 29 of 34 shots and all four attempts in the shootout.

Colorado's Craig Anderson (39 saves) left the game late in overtime following head-on-head contact by Keith Ballard (who mystifyingly received a minor penalty on the play). Peter Budaj jumped on in relief with 42 seconds remaining, facing zero shots, but it was easy to imagine the Avs' backup hopping in and getting the win with zippo shots against. Been that kind of year.

Notes: Steve Reinprecht had 3 assists. Matt Duchene led the Avs with 7 sog (3p), and 24:30 TOI. He's a rookie, folks. Nathan Horton collected 1g, 1a on two shots. Bryan McCabe had two assists and 25:20 TOI. Florida scored three power play goals. Announced attendance: 12,403.

Next up: Washington tomorrow.

Think anything further is coming for Adam Foote? Not one, not two, but three straight sucker punches to Ballard as he lay on the ice. Absolutely unnecessary. I understand protecting your goalie, but that was absurd.

I guess we can take the positives out of this one… we got the 2 points, and we didn’t give up the point to an eastern conference team… but still… I think that puts us at 5-2-3 on the year when we have a lead going to the 3rd. How horrible would 4-2-4 have looked…

“It’s just a shame that Foote didn’t injure Ballard.”

Can we re-nominate Avs fans as the worst in the NHL? People like to pick on Flyers fans, but I don’t know any who are wishing injury on any players.

I need to see the replay again, but after seeing the play and seeing the replay in the arena twice, I don’t think it was Ballard’s fault. Most of the contact on Andy was his own player.

To be fair

Going to any NHL boards will bring out the worst of the worst. Any team

Another also

I’ve seen (I assume) Panther fans compare Foote’s punches to Ballard to Bertuzzi’s attack on Moore.

Stupid fans are pretty universal.

Is it just me, or have chromosonally challenged individuals across the intertubes united to say that Keith Ballard is a menace to society and should be suspended?

Every fricking website that covered his goalie stomping has a comment from someone who thinks he should be suspended for 40 games. Are people REALLY this stupid?

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is yes, they are. Scary, innit?

on top of that, I would imagine Andy and Ballard are pretty good friends from their time spent together on this team. It was obviously an accident (well, both plays). And Foote is the one who deserves any type of discipline for those sucker punches he threw on a man on the ground.

be thankful

Let’s all be thankful that we won. Foot should be reprimanded by the league for the sucked punches he threw. A loss in that game would have been devastating…we really need to pick up the play in the 3rd period!

What was Ballard given a minor for, I didn’t understand that sequence at all?! The defender kind of took him out with the stick so he loses balance and hits the goalie, then gets a few bunches to the back of the head out of nowhere!

As for the game— entertaining, but jeez, throwing away a 5-3 lead with like a minute left was horrendous :(
