Thursday Caterwaul - Open Forum

Need some subjects to get started?

  • Colorado's Adam Foote ("Captain Courage") pummeling Keith Ballard after a momentum-induced collision knocked Craig Anderson from last night's game. Feel free to get in on this one, Columbus fans.
  • What would the backlash have been - if any - had the Cats lost that game, either in regulation or overtime periods (thereby going winless in six)?
  • Who starts for Florida tonight: Scott Clemmensen or Alexander Salak?

Cats at Caps Live Open Thread at 5pm...

A few things

- What was with Adam Foote last night? I kept waiting for him to get ejected from the game. I can’t believe he only got a roughing double minor after hitting the linesman.

- There was speculation in the bitter and cynical section as to whether Pete would start Keith and subject him to possible booing, and then we found out he was being honored as defensive player of the month. I’m sure he felt a little better when he was cheered.

- My money’s on Clemmensen starting, although it probably should be Salak. Clemmensen is still looking shaky. I think Vokoun would have had at least one of those goals last night.

How did Jeff Taffe look in limited time last night? I didn’t catch any of the game and saw he only played a little less than 6 minutes. I liked him when he played for the Coyotes. Just never played consistently.

.. to my uneducated eyes he didn’t look lost or out of place – but since didn’t take any shifts in the third he either didn’t impress DeBoer or was injured

where's the edit button?

Make that “… but since Taffe didn’t take any shifts…”

I knew what you meant. Thanks for the info.

That line didn’t take any shifts after midway through the second. I think Pete may have been trying to up the offense by playing three lines. It was 3-2 the last time the Duco-Oreskavich-Taffe line was out.

On Adam Foote ...

… I’m sort of shocked he was still in the game by the time OT rolled around. Twice I saw him punch a linesman during last night’s game; apparently Ballard is not the only one with “anger management issues”.

Clemmensen wasn’t that impressive last night – there were 2 weak goals.

Impressed by the really strong play by the Jekyll and Hyde like Weiss/Horton/Frolik line last night – hopefully we’ll see that level of play consistently.

Caps fan perspective...

Ballard – Totally unintentional. I can understand the Avs getting mad at seeing their goaltender injured but Ballard really did nothing wrong. I’ve seen Ovie go down before close to goaltenders, we’ve just been lucky in never having to see that 230 lbs tank crush a goalie. Close but never happened. Vokoun’s injury was negligence and anger thus totally his fault. This one, not so much.

Btw, looking forward to the game tonight, just don’t take out our goalie :P

Another Caps fan in agreement here. Glad Vokoun’s injury wasn’t too bad, as well.

Good luck tonight, hope it's a good game

Re. Anderson, that’s not anything to get wound up about. Ballard went hard to the net, which is a good hockey play. He got taken down and slid into the G. It happens. They’re big guys who are moving fast. Just one of those things.

The Vokoun thing….well, anyone can make a mistake. No reason to tar and feather the guy. He’s apologized, time to move on.

Hoping for a good one tonight. Come kick it in the GDT at Japers if you are looking for a change of scenery – I can pretty much guarantee you that you won’t get flamed or abused.

If I have a moment, I’ll pop in and say hi in your GDT, if it won’t ruffle too many feathers. I do like to get the view from the opposing side during a game.

“I didn’t look too smart saving him for the fifth shooter,” DeBoer said with a chuckle.

Is there anybody else...

losing confidence in DeBoer or is it too soon?

by drscruf on Dec 3, 2009 1:03 PM EST reply actions

Too soon, though he’s still making mistakes. I blame him for the fourth goal. The Weiss-Horton-Reinprecht line was out when Andy skated off. He put the Campbell-Dvorak-Kreps line out for the faceoff in their zone. They caught a break on that puck played with a high stick, so Andy had to come back out for the faceoff in the Avs’ end. This is with 1:36 left. So, DeBoer keeps those guys out. He should have put Moore out there to win that faceoff. Everybody knew that Andy was coming back out as soon as the Avs had the puck in the neutral zone. And 1:36 is enough time to score two goals. So, instead of the defensive move (ie. playing not to lose), he should have put the best faceoff guy out there and told them to try to score (ie. playing to win). Best case, they get it in and go up by three. Worst case, what happened anyway. Likely case: they get possession, get a couple shots off and burn another 20 seconds off the clock. And whomever iced the puck on the next shift, you fool. (I think it was Weiss in which case he made it up by scoring the only goal in the skills competition).

But yeah, that’s still better than some of last year’s mistakes (benching Boynton, not benching Jay Bo after the trade deadline), so maybe he’s learning.

i would still say its too soon…although he has performed worse in my opinion this year. there may or may not be any more or less talent, but the CONSTANT lead blowing, the CONSTANT poor starts to games (tho less frequent this week), and the lack of effort sometimes has to be on his shoulders.

by alterego6487 on Dec 3, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

i would still say too soon…but i find that the major problems this team has could be fixed with coaching…special teams, poor starts, poor endings….those are on the coaches/schemes in my mind.

three power play goals last night was SHOCKING. i was at the point that i didn’t even want power plays anymore.

And referring to question 2..

Had they lost, especially after blowing the game like a cheap whore, I shudder to imagine at how many people would show up at any of the next few home games. 75 cent tickets or otherwise. BTW, can we just assume that the 75 cent promotion will be in play for Monday’s match with the Oilers?

by drscruf on Dec 3, 2009 1:05 PM EST reply actions

I would imagine so. 75 cent tickets to go with half-price cookies at the concession stand. It’s DIRT CHEAP MONDAY!!!!

Hey gang. I was not only at the game, but the town hall meeting. Very interesting session, but we’ve heard alot of that stuff before.

As for the game, I think that the Panthers are lucky they ended up winning. Still a major problem holding leads and DeBoer would have lloked like a real ding dong if Weiss hadn’t scored the winner. Also by him admitting that he wasn’t one of the top three shooters puzzles me.
Tonight will be another test.

Could you tell us what was interesting about the town hall meeting? I can never make those events since I’m way up here in Melbourne so weeknight games (which they are always held on) are a no no.
