Around SBN: The Week In Worst: When Baseball Goes Wrong

Divisionally Speaking for Sunday

Bad-news_medium

A bad night for the Cats, not only in Washington but around the division - and the Eastern conference - as well.

Southeast Standings

GPWLOTLPT
Washington 54 34 16 4 72
Carolina 54 27 22 5 59
Florida 52 25 19 8 58
Tampa Bay 53 18 24 11 47
Atlanta 53 18 30 5 41

(updated 2.8.2009 at 8:26 AM EST)

Let's get right to the damage:

  • Carolina went full-bore at host Phoenix, corralling the 'Yotes 7-2. Tuomo Ruutu scored two goals to lead the attack. As if you needed to know, Raleigh's Finest leapfrogged the Cats to take second place in the SE, and eighth in the East. Florida still has two games in hand.
  • Lightning goaltender Mike McKenna(?) made 28 saves in a 1-0 shutout win over visiting Atlanta. This did not appreciably affect the standings, so it's moot.

And the carnage continues throughout the East...

  • The Flyers defeated Boston 4-3 in OT, putting an additional two points between the Panthers and fifth-place (63 points) Philadelphia.
  • Buffalo lost...but don't get too anxious: it was in a shootout to Ottawa, so the Sabres still garner that all important one point to remain in seventh place.
  • In a shocker, The Leafs ripped up Montreal 5-2. The only "good" news of the evening.

AND TODAY...

  • Philadelphia @ Atlanta, 3p. Go Thrashers. Please.
  • Detroit @ Pittsburgh, 12:30p. We're beggin' ya, Wings...let it out.
