Divisionally Speaking for Monday

Southeast Standings

GPWLOTLPT
Washington 54 34 16 4 72
Carolina 54 27 22 5 59
Florida 52 25 19 8 58
Tampa Bay 53 18 24 11 47
Atlanta 54 18 31 5 41

(updated 2.9.2009 at 3:00 PM EST)

No change in the division standings, unless one considers Atlanta losing again being "significant".

  • Philadelphia's Jeff Carter scored two goals and handed the Thrashers yet one more loss. Pump the Flyers two more points above Florida in the East. Ducky.

It wasn't all bad news in the conference, though...

  • Detroit's Ty Conklin shutout the Penguins 3-0. The tailspin in Pittsburgh (57 points, 10th place, and a coach being led to the gallows pole) continues.

TONIGHT

No Southeast games at all this evening, but keep primed for:

  • NY Rangers @ New Jersey, 7p. Five points up on the Panthers, New York attempts to shut down a hot Devils squad (8-2 last ten...no Brodeur).
  • Montreal @ Calgary, 9p. The Habs, 3-7 in their past ten, look to grab the fourth spot from Philadelphia. Montreal is currently six points ahead of the Cats. It's okay to be a closet Iron Mike fan for one night.

…AND ultimately Shawn Matthias, but we’ll see how that goes.

Mikey’s now dealing with his good buddy Louie six times per year, so call it a bit of karma.

Just to get everyone excited....

If the Panthers win the next two games (something they need to do) and the Rangers lose their next game, then when the two meet up this weekend, the team that wins will be higher in the standings… Pretty exciting because the Panthers have put in a lot of hard work recently, especially January, and it hasn’t really shown in the standings. Instead of pulling away from the teams next to them in the standings, the have moved into breathing distance of the middle seed teams. At this rate, a number 5 seed is not out of the question if they are going to make the playoffs.

…or possibly better.

Good analysis, MJ.
