During my road trip you guys submitted a few questions for George Richards to W4E during either the Devils or Caps game thread. He sent them back to me and apologized for the delay, but hey...the Panthers are making a big push for the playoffs, we understand how busy it must be for him.
Here are some questions and his responses. Big thanks to George!
DpD- What's your take on the Palm Beach Post pulling their coverage of the Panthers?
GR- It's tough losing one of the market's leading voices, but they decided because of major cutbacks, something had to go. The PBP did not do this without a lot of thought. They know there are a lot of hockey fans in Palm Beach County and beyond.
DpD- What is life on the road like?
GR- A constant party. Today in Pittsburgh, I had a salad in the lobby bar before retiring to my room where I did a blog, a notebook then took a nap. Party time!
GR- Sorry I waited too long for this to be relevant. I think they keep Bo. Just a gut feeling.
GR- Without a doubt, in my 20 years at The Miami Herald, I have covered everything this great region has to offer from polo in Palm Beach to horse racing at Hialeah to drag racing at Moroso. My main beat for years was the Broward high school beat, something I loved. Still miss covering those kids and coaches. But around 2002, then sports editor Richard Bush and his assistant (now executive SE) Jorge Rojas started sending me on the road more and more. Instead of a high school writer, I was more of The Herald's everyman, Mr. General Assignment. David J. Neal covered the Panthers from Day 1 but was starting a family and wanted to get off the road. The Herald asked if I was interested in more of a standard beat instead of doing everything else and I jumped at the chance.
