VIDEO: Dallas' Steve Ott performs head-removal surgery on Panthers' Gregory Campbell

Impersonating his favorite air-to-ground missile, Ott goes in for the kill on Campbell, sparking a mind-bending but proper wig-out by Cats' defenseman Bryan McCabe.

Suspension? Not yet, and don't concern yourself with bias from the league office on this one.

Definitely a charge … but “as bad as it gets” ??? I think Potvin is losing his mind.

Indeed, he’s had more than a few emotional calls lately. Perhaps this playoff-chase thing is getting to him. Still love the guy, tho.

My initial opinion during the game was "HOLY HELL!!!"

It was an illegal hit and he deserved a major for it. I also thought we would be hearing about a suspension on this one.

After watching it a few times (with commentators muted), I think its just a really hard, sorta late hit. It was a combination of Campbell looking back right as he’s getting hit, his proximity from the boards and Ott taking a few strides too many on his way to the hit.

I don’t think it’s malicious and I also don’t think it was an obvious blow to the head. Arms and elbows werent up, it just a hard hit.

I applaude McCabe for his response as well. Nothing wrong with protecting a teammate. However, where was the instigator? Trevor Daley did the exact same thing a few weeks ago and got hit with it, why not here?

Also, any video of a supposed stick swing to Ott’s neck late in the game?

A few things to consider on the hit

1. Ott did not leave his feet

2. Ott did not hit Campbell with his elbow. Any contact with Campbell’s head was courtesy of Ott’s shoulder.

3. The only reason Ott was hit with a major on that is because it looked worse in real time than it did on subsequent replays.

As for the reason McCabe didn’t get an instigator, the penalty that was handed out to him was a roughing minor.

An instigator would have required an actual fight. I’m sure you noticed where Ott’s gloves stayed.

He was grabbed from behind, slung down to the ice, and by the time he got back to his skates, the linesmen were in between the two.

What the hell is he supposed to do in that situation?

I know. I’m just busting balls on this one. Read below you’ll see I’m actually kinda on Ott’s side on this one.

intent to injure

the point is that Ott made no play on the puck. You cant just attack another ‘defenseless’ hockey player because you are pissed off. Guys can really get hurt, the the NHL needs to make sure these kind of things are avoided.

Im not biast, if a Panther made this kind of move, i’d be saying the same thing.

He should absolutly be suspended…safety needs to be a high priority, and in this case a message should be sent. I think 2-3 games would be sufficent…but I’m sure it wont be more then 1, if anything at all.

After the Malkin and Coburn no-suspensions I would be surprised if the NHL suspends him. Then again, with his reputation I could see Ott and Orr getting suspensions for their hits even though I think those hits were less egregious than the Malkin/Coburn hits.

by Rob Parker on Mar 30, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

With the league being highly inconsistent with suspensions and tending towards none, I’d expect no suspension. On the other hand, they have been talking a great game about how head hits are bad, should be punished, etc – but its only talking, their actions aren’t backing their words mostly.

Should be a 3 game suspension in my opinion, since its fairly nasty.

I thought Ott’s elbow went straight for Campbell’s head on this one. Yes, Campbell had his head turned the wrong way and never saw it coming, which is party his fault. But Ott took off from the opposite dot and never stopped. It was bad.

Also, earlier in the month, Ott was suspended for gouging Travis Moen’s eye after a fight. Now this. The league usually goes after repeat offenders pretty hard, I’d be surprised if we don’t hear something by the end of the day.

by Stanley C. on Mar 30, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

That was an incidental gouge.

Even Moen said so. It happened after Moen started pummeling Ott, who couldn’t legally fight back.

Regardless of the intent on the eye gouge I don’t think the NHL can justify suspensions solely on past history. Chris Pronger keeps getting suspended because he keeps doing suspension worthy things, and that’s how it should be. The Ott hit looked bad but he kept his hands and stick down. Braydon Coburn doesn’t have suspension history but he directly extended his stick and hands to Antropov’s head. If the NHL wants to talk about punishing hits to the head they need to do that, instead of punishing the guys that lead the league in PIM and looking the other way for guys with cleaner reputations.
