A look at the Panthers and Rangers final 3 games

The two 8th place teams are deadlocked with three games remaining on each clubs schedules.  If the teams remain tied, the Rangers would claim the first tiebreaker because they have one more victory than the Panthers do.  If somehow the Rangers get two overtime losses in these final three games so that the teams are also tied in victories, then the next tiebreaker is head to head games where the Panthers lead 3 games to 1.

For all intensive purposes, the Panthers need to obtain 1 more point than the Rangers to avoid the tiebreaker.  Here is a look at each team’s remaining schedule.

Phenomenal work, Wisco.

A lot of stats cancel each other out, but that’s why we watch.

“Thinking” that NY has a tougher schedule isn’t the same as actually playing a hungry club like Atlanta, whom the Cats can not afford to lose to. Again.

not only can atlanta be easily underestimated based on their record, but as you can see above, they are playing very well lately. Florida just beat another team like that in Ottawa. Ottawa is toward the bottom of the standings and out of the playoffs, but they have have been one of the best teams in the league lately. The panthers need to take care of Atlanta like they did Ottawa and put them in their place.

However, one game at a time… must beat philly first!

Tiebreaker Question

Here’s a tiebreaker hypothetical for ya, so put your thinking caps on:

I know that Montreal and New York have the tiebreaker andvantage over us, but if there is a three-way tie for 7th and Montreal and New York are tied in total wins is total wins still the first tiebreaker with goal differential only applying to the Habs and Rangers to decide 7th and 8th? Or would goal differential be the tiebreaker for all three teams?

by TheRatLivesOn87 on Apr 7, 2009 12:48 PM EDT reply actions

Wouldn’t it be individual records against each other? In other words, if MTL and NYR are tied in wins, the victor of the season series would get the nod (currently led by MTL 2-1), unless of course they wind up 2-2. Then goals-scored is in play. Right?

Headache.

w4e, you are correct. the next tiebreaker after wins is greatest number of points earned between the two clubs. the next tiebreaker in line would be goal differential.

with a three way tie, the panthers would be eliminated first by having the least wins, then the tiebreaker would be done for montreal and newyork. it would get pretty hairy if they were all tied with same number of wins. ….headache.

espn lists the tiebreakers below their standings

Thanks for the link, Wisco. I’m stunned The WWL found the room for it.
