Panthers Wonder-Links for Wednesday
Another modest day for news around the Cats (read: zippo), but there's always something to latch on to so close to next week's Draft. Away we go...
- Actually, there's this nugget from CSNPhilly which might prove to be more than "modest":
(Flyers GM Paul) Holmgren believes there’s a good chance Bouwmeester’s rights will be traded prior to July 1, when the free agency period begins.
Ok, most everyone residing outside of a mental health institution has come to the same conclusion (and I don't make Homer's coin, so keep me in mind for that vacant GM spot, Billy T.). The interesting part is this:
According to a league source, free-agent defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has a "wish list" of about six NHL teams he would like to sign with and the Flyers are on it. According to the source, Bouwmeester likes the Flyers from an "organizational standpoint" and considers them an "up-and-coming team."
Granted, given Jay's vanilla answers to every question ever put to him it's quite possible this is the standard summary of every organization looking to acquire him. Heck, league executives from coast to coast have begun consistently defining the Panthers as up-and-coming. In any case, start getting fitted for your Danny Briere sweaters now, kids.
- Apparently, the Florida Everblades' Germain Arena is pretty well beloved among minor-league venues.
- Prospect Stefan Meyer is already bored with his summer.
- The always entertaining Kurtenblog begins their "UFA of the Day" series with: yeah, him again.
- THN's Ryan Kennedy profiles two Penguins who have big decisions on their plates. How drive the points home? Mention a Panther, of course!
- Tomorrow night we'll see whether sympathy for a now ex-NHLer still exists when the NHL Awards are handed out in
future expansion siteLas Vegas.

It’s impossible to not lump DB into the equation if the Cats are going to trade Bouw’s rights. Philly is Freaking Desperate to move the guy, for all the same reasons the Panthers shouldn’t want any part of him. And signing Bouwmeester is an impossibility with “Danny’s” 3-ton, 78-year deal.
These moronic general managers spending unGodly sums on the Brieres, Smyths, Gomez’s, and Drurys of the world just two summers ago , signing them to insanely long contracts, and now find themselves doing anything short of a dance in their underwear to toss them into a dumpster.
Let ‘em deal with the ruination they’ve created.

Nonononononononononononono!
I saw some people on one of those links talking about trading Gagne, and I’d take that trade. But of the two people they’re most trying to shed, I’d take Lupul over Briere. They’re overpaying him, but he’s still pretty good and not nearly as fragile.
Nononononononononononononono! Take Two.
Gagne for a VERY limited period? Yes. Lupul’s all about his linemates. Fifth wheel without tigers around him.

Gagne’s only got two years on his contract at $5.25mil per. The way I see it, that gives us two years of a top-line forward at a not ridiculous price while the kids get it together. Lupul’s a million-a-year cheaper, but has four years on his contract. That would give us another Olesz; someone who’s making 4-ish million a year based on potential rather than performance.
I wonder if Briere gets bought out. I’m not sure anyone’s going to take that contract right now. Looking at the ten guys in the league who will make $8mil+ next season, not even half are worth it (Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Lecavalier-who’s overpaid at $10). And some of those guys (like Malkin) are partially overpaid because they were stunning on a development contract. Same as Zetterberg. He was amazing for $2 mil, so now he’s going to make $7mil+. Drury, Gomez, Briere, Spezza, Heatley, Alfredsson; those guys are excellent hockey players, but aren’t worth more than Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom or Chara.
