Panthers qualify several potential RFAs, kiss off others
Lots of free agent news from Steve Gorten at the Sun-Sentinel:
The Panthers HAVE TENDERED QUALIFYING OFFERS [a 10 percent increase of last season's salary] to restricted free agent forwards David Booth and David Brine. In Booth's case, obviously it's just a formality, as he's set to get a considerable raise from the $625,000 he made last season.
The Panthers needed to officially tender Booth an offer, however, to continue negotiating his long-term deal. If they didn't, they'd lose his rights following the NHL's 5 p.m. deadline today to tender RFAs. Sexton said he talked to Booth's agent again today. He wouldn't not say whether the difference between the two sides is salary or length of contract.
More to come this evening.

I have some mixed feelings about this story. On one hand, I’m glad the Panthers seem to be prudent with their money and are obviously only pursuing the guys that they feel make this club better. On the other hand I don’t like Sexton’s comments in the end about being active in free agency. This club needs some legitimate scoring help. I’d list their first line needs, but I’m pretty sure all of us know what this team needs. The feeling this story gives me is once again “we’re not going to do anything crazy or drastic in free agency. We’re just going to hope that the marginal players we can easily sign can help us squeeze into the playoffs.” That doesn’t sit well with me. I’m not sure what others think, but I have said for a while that I’d like to see management try to make a splash and get some names down here.

Understand completely where you’re coming from. But I’m of the camp that believes the organization will say whatever it needs when going into a deadline day, free agency period, draft, whatever. The comments – or lack of them – are specifically targeted to get a reaction from rivals, and throw them off the scent, if you will.
I’ve learned not to take anything stated prior to the event seriously. It’s a chess match between thirty opponents, after all.
