Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

From VanMurph at the official site:

The real question from me here is for Jacques Martin: If you knew 18 months ago that Bouwmeester wanted to play for a handful of other teams, why on earth was he still a Florida Panther at this season’s draft? If handing you a list of other teams he would rather play for isn’t a CLEAR indication that he WAS NOT going to re-sign here (despite his rather deceptive public undertones otherwise), then I don’t know what is.

Good Points

Excellent points all. Considering the Pronger deal, Jacques getting 2 firsts + roster player would have been about right for Jay, especially considering his value was probably higher at the start of last season.

I can’t blame him though. There would have been a massive fan mutiny had he pulled the trigger on that and it probably would have been viewed by many as the Cats basically throwing in the towel on the season before it began…but as they say hindsight is 20/20.

Agree with not blaming JM too much. When I mentioned the “fan mutiny” idea elsewhere I basically got What are you nuts? The fans don’t run the team! And I’m still pretty new to this so what do I know. But I go with the mutiny perspective. We were hoping. So much fro hope. And being new to this I must say the players are good politicians. Sure I love Florida! I’ll stay if they make me a good offer…yeah I’d better just say what I have to say until I get a better offer. Interesting.

I agree with the fan mutiny, depending on what would’ve come back in the deal, and whether or not it would’ve helped us to win. For Martin it was a lose-lose, unless the team went out on the ice and won. If he’d made the move in the off-season, he would’ve faced the worst of the backlash during the summer, because by opening night, fans would’ve been concentrating on our season, and Jay would’ve been a memory by then.

I suppose it’s all water under the bridge now, but when these details came out, I couldn’t help but wonder what the Panthers would’ve looked like if Martin would’ve realized that Jay wasn’t coming back and just made a trade with the highest bidder. As was mentioned above, hindsight is 20/20.

well, now at least management can spin the story that Jay Blow screwed the team vs. the reality, which might be closer to “management is awful at handling their assets” which I believe is Murph’s real point.

IMO, since the last ownership group bought the team (can’t remember how long ago it was?), the handling of the franchise has been downright awful.

I’m not holding my breath that the new potential owners are going to do any better, which all adds up to a marginal fan base, big name players leaving and fans of other teams and various media outlets putting the Panthers at the top of the list in any contraction talks.

Put a helluva lotta pressure on coach Pete, no?

What a burden for a first-year guy: get your new tribe to the postseason for the first time in eight years – under a new, aggressive system, mind you, and oh – while you’re at it – use your supposed superior managerial abilities to convice our soon-to-be-gone free agent that he should remain with the club, because, well, “he should”. Long term.

Anyone else ever question DeBoer’s mindset when he first met with JM? Oh, to be a fly on THAT wall…

What a tall freaking order.
