Tuesday Caterwaul - Panthers Open Forum

 For discussion...

  • Overlooked a bit after last night's victory (and Tomas Vokoun's shutout) was not only Gregory Campbell's game-winning goal, but his recent play: three points (2g) in his last four games and a +3 rating.
  • Rostislav Olesz - another forward familiar with the fans' doghouse - has also been strong, recording six points (5g) in his past five (+4).
  • The Panthers have a quick two-game trip beginning tomorrow in Newark against the Devils and wrapping on Thursday at (gloriously unsponsored) Nassau Coliseum. Not only do the Cats get the honor of another meeting with Martin Brodeur, but likely follow it up with a "healthy" Rick DiPietro, who shut out those very same Devils on Sunday. Ah, the Patrick Division.
  • Very kewl to hear Hall of Famer Jiggs McDonald calling the Panthers on 790 The Ticket last night. Something indefinable - yet thoroughly classic - about his delivery. We still love ya, Randy!
  • Terrific article on former Florida defenseman Mike Van Ryn and his astounding effort in attempting to return to NHL ice. Again.

Not to pile on, but I have to admit getting a chuckle out of this line from Panthers president/COO Michael Yormark a couple of days ago in his blog:

"As I’ve said in the past, being a season ticket holder with the Florida Panthers is the best value in professional sports,"

Just sounded eerily close to a similar phrase burned into our collective conscience:

"Keep in mind that the perfect accessory for the man in your life is a season ticket to the Chiefs' games."

 Let's go Walt.

Good Game

I was lucky to be able to attend the game last night last minute…

Some Hockey Thoughts

Vokoun is awesome. He didn’t face a ton of difficult shots, but the guy is totally money. He made one unbelievable save on a 2-1 (can’t remember if it was the first or 3rd) that was sweet. I can’t understand how any Panther fan could hate this guy, he was solid.

The Panthers play the most boring brand of hockey outside of NJ. I don’t know if it’s a PD version of the trap, but it’s definitely not exciting. Course, you don’t get style points in the NHL, only 2 for the W, so that’s all that matters.

This team is definitely not flashy, but lots of lunch bucket guys. For my money, I’d love to see a guy with more sizzle (although Ilya was semi-invisible last night), but I see that a guy like that probably wouldn’t fit the system being played.

Some non-hockey thoughts

Very small crowd last night- maybe 10,000? That’s kind of sad. I can’t believe there were a fair number of guys trying to scalp tickets to the game. Really? I didn’t know you could make money scalping tickets to an half full arena. The crowd however, was very pro-Panther and quite fun. The BAC has done a great job of creating a fun atmosphere.

This has probably been joked about before, but in the men’s room, there are stickers in the urinals advertising a urologist with the Panther’s logo on them. So effectively thousands of fans are getting to “pee” on the Panther’s logo? It would be much more refreshing if the stickers had Gary Bettman’s picture on them.

The ice dancers really should have to know how to skate and wear skates for their intermission performance.

Welcome to Hockey In South Florida

Vokoun is the backbone of this team. Without him we are in a real bind. As for the fan base and the half full arena, that’s typical of a matchup like this. However when one of the Canadian teams or New York teams invade our building, it’s much more crowded, although the rooting between teams is virtually split.

As for the men’s room stickers, yes it’s been joked about before, and they still haven’t been replaced.

Regarding Yormark’s comments about being a season ticket holder, well all I can say is I’m still one for the love of the game. This team hasn’t been to the playoffs in nine years, and we haven’t won a playoff game in twelve! As for value for a season ticket holder, there are other things that I can do with my money that would generate more value, but since I’m a diehard hockey fan, I literally bite the bullet and continue on.

As I mentioned below, I don’t know that I would ever buy a ticket to a game unless I absolutely wanted to attend. Even then, I might hold out and see what kind of deal i could get at the arena on game night.

Haha the first time I went to a Panthers game and saw the ‘Ice dancers’ I said the same thing — at the intermission I was expecting some unique skating performance, but alas, a complete waste of time.

As for the scalpers- yeah I don’t understand that either. For a sell out game sure, but these divisional matchups don’t tend to attract fans. I got two $100 seats for a Carolina game this year for just $50 in total.

I really didn’t rate Vokoun earlier in the season, but he’s won me over and I admit I was wrong – he’s our most consistent performer now.

Say what you will about Horton and Weiss, but if you can get Campbell running on all cylinders this club can turn some heads. He’s chippy, energetic, and can put the puck in the net.

regarding Yormark

Panthers season tickets are easily the WORST value in pro sports. Uppers have no intrinsic value when you can sit lower bowl for $15. Why you would spend money on season tickets when those same tickets can’t fetch even half value on the open market is beyond me.

It’s time for a FanPost on this, I think, so hopefully, if I get a chance, I’ll try to contribute.

Regarding last night’s game, both teams were guilty of simply awful hockey. True, the Panthers don’t really light it up, but with the lack of scoring depth, can you blame them? The truth is that until they build a winner, Monday (or any weeknight for that matter) night games against equally anonymous opponents will draw poorly.

I have paid a minimal amount or gotten tickets for free every game I’ve gone to, so I don’t know why I’d ever buy a season ticket.

I imagine with the abundance of scalpers last night, that if I waited until 10 minutes after they dropped the puck, I might get some really good discounts on tickets for good seats, just so those guys could recoup a little money. If I lived closer (not 45 minutes away like I do), I would probably do this for nearly every game (that didn’t have a huge draw like a Canadian team etc.)

I went to a game a few months back and got given tickets to the lower bowl after I had purchased pretty good upper bowl tickets. I wanted to sell the uppers for $5-10 bucks apiece. I got no takers. I then dropped my asking price to “free” and I had several people turn them away. I literally could not GIVE tickets away. It was hysterical.

I wish I lived in Yormack’s alternate reality where the Panthers were a perennial playoff franchise and made, if not won, the cup once in the last 10 years.

In our reality I’ve been a season ticket holder since Year 2 – the current “True Blue” campaign is worthless. I would get a half season of tickets for my 13 game package price, which its difficult enough for me to use 8-10 games since I live about 180 miles away. I’d, and most fan, would prefer they get realistic with the ticket prices and give us the substantial discount they offer everyone else during the course of the season.

This is likely my last year of being a season ticket holder, I’ll just buy games, at a substantial discount, that I need here and there instead of making the big investment season tickets require.

Spoiled

From where I originally came from (Chicago), it was playoffs every year! Many seasons it was deep into the playoffs, conference finals, but nonetheless, always in the hunt.
The year before I moved here there was a run for the Stanley Cup, only to have Pittsburgh sweep us. I was a season ticket holder for 11 years. Full package and rarely missed a game, and went to all playoff games.

When I moved here in ‘93 I realized that things wouldn’t be as automatic as I was used to, since this was an expansion team. I hoped that someday patience would be rewarded. I’ve had season tickets since ‘98, and can’t express enough my disappointment of not having the Panthers in a playoff game for almost ten years.

As I mentioned in a previous reply a few days ago, I don’t care about any special deals or upgrades or freebies. I would like for once to have a competitive team on the ice that everyone is proud of.

For those of you that have never experienced playoff atmposphere, all I can say is that there is nothing like it. And when you win a few games it just gets better and better.

We’re a long way from that. I’d like to hope that this year it works out, but I feel that out slow start and our mediocre record will hurt our chances. That being said, it’s too early to talk about renewal packages. It’s only January!

First, playoff hockey atmosphere is unbeatable. I went over to Tampa for the Cup finals whenever that was, just to say I went to a Finals game, and it was unreal. I can only imagine what it’s like in a “true” market. Not to say the Tampa fans weren’t loud and over the top into it, but still…

And as far as buying season tickets, the few games I’ve gone to, I go through stubhub every time. Last time, I got 300 level club tickets for $20. I’ve found lower level, row 10 tickets for $25. I understand there are extra “perks” or meetings or clubs or whatever that come with the season tickets, but calling it the best value in sports is a joke.

When the front page of your official NHL team website is an ad for Jimmy Buffet tickets, you know you’re not in it for the hockey…

I went to playoff games at an AHL arena and it was pretty exciting…

I will also admit that I went out for sushi rather than go to the game last night. Monday against the Thrashers. Err…

I'd love to see ...

… Yormark’s picture on those urinal cakes. Hell, it would double beer sales. ;-)
