Florida Panthers' Nathan Horton out. A long time.
The Miami Herald, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and the Panthers Facebook page are all announcing winger Nathan Horton - injured by an errant Dennis Seidenberg puck clearing attempt on Thursday against the Islanders - will be out of the Cats' lineup for the foreseeable future.
Worst-case scenario (so far)? On Frozen Pond is calling it 4-6 weeks. Whether it's referred to as a "broken leg" or "fractured tibia", the guy's gonna be shelved for a considerable period.
Horton is Florida's leading scorer with 46 points but, like the entire club, has slowed of late, recording two points (both goals) and a minus-1 in his past five games. The Panthers have lost their past two matches going into tonight's home stint against visiting Toronto, while struggling mightily to find scoring from anyone.
Nine games remain before the Olympic break in mid-February. With David Booth still on the mend - and having as yet gone unreplaced in the lineup - the loss of Horton completes a one-two punch Florida can ill afford. Promotion from within the organization to cover numerous injuries sustained by the parent club has proven unremarkable at best while leaving the Rochester Americans gasping for coverage.
Intriguingly, the Panthers demoted hard-nosed first year winger Victor Oreskovich just yesterday. While this may be - as the Sun-Sentinel speculated - a move made to allow for the return of Kenndal McArdle, it's a bit confusing since the Cats were obviously aware at the time that Horton would be out of the lineup this weekend.
Will this force the hand of management to find a replacement - even temporarily - via trade? Or does Florida's weak bargaining position quickly strike that possibilty down? GM Randy Sexton should have some tough decisions to make in the coming days.
In any case, the Panthers will be relying on their third and fourth lines like never before.

i made a fan post about this when i found out a few hours ago…
What is it about this team that just when you think things might be turning around, there’s another smack-in-the-face? When do we start talking about the Curse of the Rat? Will we see Victor Oreskovich shortly returning back to Sunrise or was this known when the odd decision was made to send him back to Rochester?
The team has battled through most of its injuries thus far, but to be without now both Booth and Horton and asking this team for a trip to the playoffs is asking a heck of a lot. Who will replace Horton’s numbers that he’s putting up in what might be the best year he’s played in the NHL? Besides Frolik and Weiss, there is no one to be expected to do that, and even those two guys can’t make up the 20 or so more points we expected from Nate during the next month.
There’s NINE (18pts) games left until the Olympic break…if we can win 6 of them or stay within striking distance, we get Booth and Nate back after the break. but what if we lose 7 of these 9? is it even worth bringing Boother back then?
and can anyone else help but be jealous of the success both Phoenix and the Avalanche are having this season? both were bottom of the league last year and are now on pace for home-ice in the first round in the much more competitive than ours Western conference.
how is it that a team struggling so financially and drawing 5000 fans to games is sitting with 63 points but we can’t even get to 53?

Repik! He would have been on pace for roughly 25 goals had Deboer been playing him. He’s better than Sykora and the only knock on him is that Deboer thinks he’s a defensive liability but judging from the team play this season I dont think Deboer knows a damn thing about defense. And he’s free!
We can’t wait for Horton to come back and to see if Booth comes back as well. While this doesn’t end hortpns season it will end the Panthers I am not very happy with what both DeBoer and Sexton are saying right now.
If there was ever a time to make a deal its now.
I honestly don’t think this team is mentally tough enough to overcome this. That is what management needs to look at. At least if you go out and get someone new not from Rochester, at least it will appear that we give a crap.
I will be very dissappointed if we don’t do anything.
As for Sykora, he’s not the messiah but he can help. I would be happy to go to minnesota or wherever he is and drive him here myself.
No deal, then no playoffs!!!!!!
You will see.

If you remember
it is a very rare occasion that players returning from injury have an immediate positive effect on their team other than an emotional one. How many games has it taken veteran Cory Stillman to really make a contribution again? My point is that even if Booth and Horton come back after the break, the possibility that this team will be even close to the coveted spot #8 is pretty remote. If they are more than a few points back, let Booth sit out the rest of the season. If history is any indication, Nathan will take the rest of the season “off” anyway.
Unless there is a major trade (or 2) or there are some motivational miracles left up PDB’s sleeve, the Panthers are done. I hate to feel that way, but I have to be realistic. I totally hope I am wrong, but only time will tell. Good luck, Cats. And Randy – time to earn your money.
We’ll be selling come trade deadline (Vokoun, Horton should be tops on our block). This wasn’t a playoff team with Horton. And sure, we can go looking for someone to help us now, this season, but at what cost? Matthias\Repik\Garrison\Ellerby? Top prospects and\or draft picks that Lord knows we’ll need next season and beyond? This isn’t a young team anymore. Still inexperienced, but not young… we can’t go unloading the farm just to get a guy who might help us make a 7th, 8th seed and get swept out. And even that would be a long shot. Just call it what it is and start watching some OHL games. Taylor Hall or Cam Fowler?
IMO, Vokoun is all we have to sell. Inconsistent Horton cannot justify the price that comes with him. Sure he was on track to have a really good year, but now he’s hurt and out for who knows how long? And what do you get for his salary? Great one night, gone the next? Not worth it.

Long term, no. But at the deadline, finding a team sitting 7th or 8th (Ottawa has been rumored to be interested in Horton since November) who thinks it needs one more scorer to put it over the edge, we might be able to get a nice package in return. Obviously, if he’s out until after the deadline, he’ll be a little harder to move… it’s all hypothetical at this point.
But personally, I think unless some sort of miracle run happens between now and the Olympic break, March\april should be used to get our possible future starters some NHL time. Shut down Booth for the year, let Matthias, Repik, Garrison, Ellerby come up to the big team for the last month and see what they can do. We need to know sooner rather than later if these guys filled with “potential talent” actually have “talent.”
Its a toigh call. I’m a bit of a cowboy/gunslinger when it comes to this. I still think we need to try and get someone even if its just Sykora. If we aren’t in it b y the deadline then let Booth rest up and shut him down.
This is a real downer again

Agreed. If they really think they might make the playoffs, they need someone to replace Booth and Horton. And if they aren’t in a position to make the playoffs after the Olympics, then Booth should sit out the rest of the season. Let him work on conditioning and avoid contact until training camp.
If Sexton sits, then we’ll know he’s as worthless as JM.

Booth breaks record
Longest time out with concussion in the history of the human race. Stunning really, he’s played a contact sport for most of his life and in comparison to literally every other contact sport on this planet anyways, nobody has ever to my knowledge substained a concussion and has missed the time he has. I mean he is not even close to returning…light skating? Huh? Might as well retire if everytime you suffer a blow to the head you’re out for the season.
Florida REALLY regrets giving this kid money and term…brutal hit no doubt but you really have to question his heart and determination. Does he ever want to play hockey again? Is he milking this injury so he doesn’t have to work?
Much of what you’re saying here will not be very popular, and is bordering on trolldom.

WTF?! Are you kidding me????
Do you even watch any games that Booth has played? He is the hardest working Panther they have & it is killing him to be out this long. You are way off base with this comment & you will find a lot of people to argue your statement. Booth would give 100% EVERY game & thensome. If he wasn’t making a goal, he contributed in other ways. You can never, EVER call him a lazy player.
