Blockbuster: Flames deal Dion Phaneuf to Maple Leafs ...and there's more
Looks like Jay Bouwmeester is now firmly cemented as the Calgary Flames' franchise defenseman.
Toronto has sent Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Ian White, and Jamal Mayers to Calgary in exchange for Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie, and Fredrik Sjostrom in a trade of gigantic proportions.
Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke announced the deal in a press conference late this morning.
Reports are flying about a second deal involving Toronto and the Ducks, which would send Jean-Sebastien Giguere and a (possible first-round) pick or prospect to the Leafs for Vesa Toskala, which has not yet been confirmed. Forward Jason Blake's name has also been mentioned as a potential piece.
Check out Pension Plan Puppets, Matchsticks and Gasoline, and Anaheim Calling for more SB Nation coverage.
The Panthers host Anaheim Monday and the new-look Flames on Friday.
UPDATE: Giguere to Toronto for Toskala and Blake. Finis.

Considering all the rumors floating around lately, I thought this was fake at first. But then I knew the Litter Box was good at not perpetuating the rumors.

Has there been
a Vinny Lecavalier to Montreal rumor yet? What’s taking the Canadian media so long to make up one like they’ve done for the last 2-3 years!
Why didn't Washington
who is in desperate need of a Goalie trade for Giguere?
1- They don’t have salary cap space
2- Giguere isn’t that good and therefore not an improvement on Washington’s present netminding
3- Capitals management is singing ’Don’t Worry be happy’ as they think the team’s offense will carry them all the way to a Stanley Cup win as they are.
Or 2 or 3 of the above.
Wow, what a bad day for the leafs, they seriously only have 3 decent forwards now (Kessel, Stempniak, Ponikarovsky), 2 mediocre goalies and only 1 defenseman (Kaberle) who isnt terribly underachieving. Now that they have Phaneuf I wonder if Burke has an offer for Kaberle, the only player on the entire team whos in form.
Wasn’t Burke pretty adamant he didnt’ want to trade Kaberle?
