(The loss to Dallas) wasn't a lack of effort. We tried doing the right things. But when you stand around, teams will pick you apart.

Panthers C Stephen Weiss following a 4-1 home defeat by the Stars on Thursday, via OFP.

Just so we have this straight: the Cats saw fit to "stand around" but effort wasn't lacking. Got it.

As you said, they were standing around, but they made an effort…lol

just dumbstruck by how bad that game was…

plain awful.

What?

It wasn’t lack of effort? Ah, then tell me Stevie Wonder, what the heck was it?
Spoken by a leader of the team?
There lies part of the problem. Not to be negative five games in, but the expectation level must be higher.

Indeed

how can you say it was not a lack of effort?

This is why Weiss should not be captain, making comments like that….. What Weiss meant to say was “we took five days off, played golf, chilled and pated ourselves on the back this week, just like how we did last year.”

What caught my attention was that the Panthers did not even try to pick a fight or anything. They were flat as can be, and looked like they were skating through marsh. They stunk up the ice last night.

Rhino should be benched after last night. McAbe and Kuli (sorry guys) should be demoted after that performance last night at least for a game. It is time for everyone to produce on this team.

Effort can be applied to more things than just mobility.

Holy moly...

Settle down, folks. Just like you can’t overreact to the first four games of the season and think we’re gonna win the east based on “well we worked harder than them”, one bad game is no reason to jump off the wagon. Isn’t Weiss the only one that scored last night anyways, well after the result was no longer in doubt, playing hard to the end, all that good stuff? And last I checked, Weiss isn’t the captain… Let’s try not to take 2 sentences after a dud game and send him to Rochester for it.

The “expectation level” of this team is 13th in the conference if you ask the most optimistic of pundits… And as Bill Lindsay said so eloquently, the other teams “have players that know how to pick their legs up and put them down” (oh no, that was during the Vancouver game I think)… Bad games happen during an 82 game season. It’s how you bounce back the next game. You can practice as hard as you want during four full days off, but you can’t just jump back to game speed. We’ll see what kind of team, and more importantly character and leadership, we have when we play the first place Isles Saturday night after a stinker. I fully expect to see the effort ramp back up.

No one’s implying the season is lost. Just that the game last night flat sucked.

Karl, this is panthers hockey your talking about…cant really defend them when this has been going on for years, and last night was a good example. I dont know if you were there, but I almost fell asleep in my seat.

by Colt1235 on Oct 22, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t there, but I did watch to the end (admittedly not with my full attention though). And yes, last night’s game sucked. It happens. I’m not defending them or saying we’re a better team than that even. I’m saying we played four solid 60 minute games out of 5. That’s a better stretch than we had all of last season, so let’s ease up on the pessimism (at least until November). We aren’t a playoff team, and I can live with a stinker now and then. It’s the effort and the progress I’ll be judging this season on more than anything. Last season, a bad game like Thursday’s and we’d end up losing 2 or 3 more before the team figured out that what we’re doing isn’t working. Saturday night, we’ll find out what kind of progress has been made in the bounce back department. I’m OK with that.

“I’m saying we played four solid 60 minute games out of 5” youre right, we did.

I think you guys mistook what I wrote.I meant that Some people have stated that Weiss should be captain in the future,….which is why I stated he should never be captain with comments like that.

I have hope for these guys, but scoring only 7 goals in 5 games…..It is a little worrisome. Higgins is nowhere to be found in the scoring department, which is why he was brought over to the Panthers. .

These guys have to start producing some goals or it will be a long long season. I think it would be a wise move to demote and bench, and shuffle lines now then later. 9 years without a playoff appearance, they should do whatever it takes to motivate.

I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and don’t feel such a quote should disqualify him from a future captaincy; think even he likely feels it could have been worded far better.

Not having had the privilege of getting mics and cameras shoved up my nose following a terribly embarrassing performance by just about everyone on my team, I can’t really testify.

7 goals in 5 games

Don’t we have 10 in the last 3?

And Higgins was a big question mark going in. He’s disappeared the last 2 seasons and there was no guarantee he was gonna turn it around. He wouldn’t be the first guy to regress after coming here.

by Karl Selvig on Oct 23, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I expected at least one goal out of him in five games. Granted, everyone’s shooting blanks but folding into the norm – in a contract year – is not what I expected.

I don’t think I’ve seen it said that Weiss should be the captain, only that it’s highly likely he will be if McCabe gets traded at the deadline.

Anyway, Weiss isn’t the most articulate guy, so I wouldn’t take anything he says too seriously.

The effort last night was lacking. The game was like watching paint dry and that’s no party.
For the way that they’ve played up to lat night, a better effort should be expected.
Guys were standing around and watching, not participating.

It’s hard not to be critical. But when you’re veteran number one center makes comments like these, you have to wonder how determined is he?

by The Rat Trick on Oct 22, 2010 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

Also, since Weiss is not playing all that well, it would be nice for him to admit that and actually say, I need to be better!

by The Rat Trick on Oct 22, 2010 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

Alas, it seems that among the vets, only Tomas Vokoun will admit to this when necessary.

I'm glad I skipped the game...

to go see Stanton Moore in Fort Lauderdale. Great show!

If the Panthers don’t come back and play like the first four games tonight, then the season’s lost. I hope Tallon has looked at the history. If they start coming back from bad games just as bad or even worse, he just needs to start trading veterans off.
