Fair or not, the interesting thing is that other than McCabe, the other four players on the ice are inexperienced NHL players. Just an observation.

Even though it’s preseason, Peetey needs to be sharper on the line matches.

You said it yourself: it’s preseason.

I don’t know what was more despicable, the hit on Dadonov or Moen teeing up on a rookie.

The was a penalty, but I think it looked a lot worse than it was intended. It wasn’t a “dirty” hit, but the Panthers responded appropriately with the fisticuffs.

The fight – the real despicable thing is the officials tying up one of the players. You have to allow them to go or you have to have them both corralled because DeBoer is right that Gudbrandson could have really gotten hurt. That official is the real disgrace – I find it hard to chastise a goon for finishing a fight he was challenged to. I seriously doubt he was wondering if Gudbrandson was tied up or not. He was thinking about landing a good punch and winning the fight. While I may not like it, I’ve got to give Moen a pass because I don’t see how I would do anything differently in regards to the fight if I was in his position.

The penalties called were correct punishment, but I think DeBoer is right for challenging the officiating on this. They were clearly in the wrong and the NHL needs to address it internally with the officials and teams involved. As far as the Cats and Moen? They’ll settle up later this season.

If you’re going to fight someone, you square up and fight, you don’t take pot shots while the guy’s back is to you and the ref’s got him tied up. I’d really like to know at what point in the video there’s a challenge by Gudbranson that Moen recognized and accepted. It’s more like Moen found the closest person to punch and went after him while the ref was trying to pull him away.

Not really clear what part of the hit wasn’t dirty…was it the hit from behind or the fact that he was sent head-first into the boards? I’m not even going to touch the whole “intentions” thing. Unless you are Travis Moen.

Gudbrandson has said the he challenged him, not to mention that McCabe and Gudbrandson flew in, with shots at Moen’s head immediately. To me, that’s a challenge. If I’m fighting someone, I’m not thinking about whether their back is turned and why. I’m thinking about landing a punch and ending the fight. Is it a sucker-punch, yes but I don’t lay fault with him. He did what you’re supposed to in a hockey fight – try to get the guy on the ice. I lay the fault on the zebras for making it worse. It was a bad situation that the officials should have handled differently and consequently Gudbrandson got screwed.

Was the hit a cheap penalty yes, but I won’t agree on dirty. He was a good 10 feet from the boards and Dadonov turned towards the boards right as he gets hit. He loses and edge, falls towards and slides into the boards – which to me isn’t dirty. It’s a hard hit, a penalty, and deserved the response the Panther players gave. If Dadonov hadn’t turned, there’s not even a penalty on it.

Is it a sucker-punch, yes but I don’t lay fault with him.

I don’t get this. The definition of sucker-punch is that the person who did it, did it. You’re basically saying, “I blame the ref for Travis Moen sucker-punching somebody.”

I hear this excuse for “turning the back” all the time, but this doesn’t fit that argument. Turning the back typically refers to plays along the boards, where a player moving side to side with another turns to face the boards in order to protect the puck or shake the hitter. It sure looks like Dadonov turns to backhand the puck to his defenseman, not to face the boards or anything that would equate to deliberately putting his back to Moen. Additionally, I don’t think he “loses his edge” if Moen doesn’t hit him from behind. This is actually a textbook major penalty in the USA Hockey rulebook, and it would be a game misconduct if Dadonov is injured.

I don’t blame the ref for Moen hitting Gudbrandson, I blame Gudbrandson. Moen responded to a fight – one Gudbrandson was trying to instigate and should have instigated. I blame the ref for it being a sucker-punch because he had a player pinned. It’s not Gudbrandson’s or Moen’s fault that he was restrained. Without the official interference, Gudbrandson squares, this is a regular fight and we aren’t talking about it.

As for the hit, it doesn’t matter why he turned, he did. I’m not saying it wasn’t a penalty, it was but if Dadonov hadn’t changed his direction to chase the puck at that instant, Moen checks him square and he falls back on his butt instead of towards the boards, and likely no whistle. However, he turns, gets hit, Moen gets a deserved penalty but that doesn’t mean the hit is dirty.

You said that the hit and the subsequent punch were dirty and I just don’t agree. There was a check, a penalty and a fight. None of it was dirty.

Of course, we’ll never agree. Because unlike you, I acknowledge that Travis Moen sent someone head-first into the boards and sucker-punched someone else. Give him credit where it is due; he knew exactly what he was doing the whole time. He lined up Dadonov to send him flying into the boards, which is dangerous backwards or head-first, and he had plenty of time to see that Gudbranson was being restrained and decided to hit him anyway.

Is a penalty dirty? Or did he take a “good” penalty? I think the biggest problem is you have a definition of “dirty” that makes little sense. Name an incident that you considered dirty.

I’m simply disagreeing with you on your statement. If you think it’s dirty, fine. I acknowledge that and you’re entitled to it. I think Dadonov turning makes this entire thing moot – something Moen could not have anticipated in the fraction of a second before he hit him. You disagree. In my mind, a guy gets challenged to a fight and he tries to end it. Dirty? Not in my mind, but I was always taught to end the fight first. For you, it obviously does.

I think we’ve beaten Barbaro to death on this. Moving on.

Completely avoided the last part of my comment. Well played. Moen would have put you head-first into the boards for turning your back on the debate.
