Caterwaul: waivers, Nylander, links UPDATE: Grabner to NYI

We'll know today whether Panthers forward Michael Grabner survived his 48 hours on the waiver express to Rochester; Andrew Peters and Joe Callahan were along for the ride. Also, keep an ear perked in case rookie Erik Gudbranson inks with the Cats; news from that front may be mere moments away. Or not. Any case, talk it up in the comments.

UPDATE: Multiple media reports say Grabner to the Islanders. Enjoy the experiment, Garth.

Ha, just realized Grabner followed the "reverse Luongo"        - JGreenberg81 via Twitter

Grabner's fate

Any idea how long after the noon deadline before we’d know if a claim was put in for Grabner, Donny?

by Yzerfan on Oct 5, 2010 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Nevermind...

Looks like he was claimed by The Islanders according to Bob McKenzie.

by Yzerfan on Oct 5, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

No surprise there. Looking into it now.

Well, if that is true we can only hope that he is showing no offensive touches.

by Boothy16 on Oct 5, 2010 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

I think...

He’ll have a job as long as it takes for Okposo to get back on the ice, then he’ll probably be waived again. I kinda feel sorry for the kid at the moment.

by Yzerfan on Oct 5, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

You could be right with that. But I doubt that he can make more than playing on a 4th line. And as soon as Okposo gets back he will likely be waived. Maybe the Cats reclaim him by then?

by Boothy16 on Oct 5, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

If The Islanders were to waive him, then yes, The Cats(after Edmonton) would be one of the first that could put in a claim for him. Hard to believe that Tallon couldn’t find a trade partner for Grabs, and that his only recourse was to try and sneak him through waivers.

by Yzerfan on Oct 5, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

If the Isles eventually dump him to waivers, only to be reacquired by FLA, what does that say about the Panthers?

A lot could change between now and then. (DeBoer gets canned, injuries, etc.) Depending on those circumstances, it may say nothing at all.

by badger737 on Oct 5, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually not so

If the Isles were to try to send him down again this year, the Pantehrs have first claim to him, since they lost him originally, at which time the Panthers can send him to Rochester without the need for waivers. This happened a few years agao with Doug Janik, who the Blackhawks and Stars flipped back and forth numberous times.

by saskpantherfan on Oct 5, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

That only applies to the first 30 days after the waiver claim. If they wave him in three months time, he goes through the normal process again. Panthers’ don’t get first right.

Stupid.
I would have rather kept Grabner and put Bernier on waivers.

I dont think Grabner was given a fair chance, he wasn’t hung out to dry either. I know he looked bad in a few of the games but lots of our players look bad in lots of games. I think we can all agree that the stint he had here wasn’t long enough to gauge how useful he could have been to us.

At least we have Santorelli to lessen the sting of Tallons inconsistency between rhetoric and action.

by pukeoncops on Oct 5, 2010 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

Hot Seat?

I can’t believe that guy compared Booth’s situation to Carey Price, who will get hung in Montreal if he chokes. There are many more guys on this list before Booth, including many on that list.

Gudbranson

No word on him yet? :(

Just do it Front Office, we are picked by everyone and their dog to be in last place (overall, not just the east) so why not start Gudbranson right away. He can play, they have seen it, just go for it.

Does any other player on our defense have the ability to be a true stud d-man? I’m talking Chris Pronger-esque. Kulikov will be awesome and Wideman and McCabe have shown the ability to move the puck and not be a total defensive liability. But seriously, Gudbranson could be the backbone of this team for a long time so instead of top 4 minutes in the AHL, why not top 4 minutes in the NHL?

If we are going to finish last and if this is going to be a long season it sounds suspiciously like we have ZERO to lose! Go Gudbranson Go!

The Day Got Worse

as Gudbranson has not reached a deal and is heading back to Kingston for the year. This one REALLY disappoints me.

wow, thats horrible

by Colt1235 on Oct 5, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Because by not playing him and sending him back to juniors, you get to see his work ethic and mentality more while not sacrificing two years of potential UFA status. This team isn’t winning this year and its not winning next year, so why waste two years of the kid being locked up with Florida, short of a stupid RFA offer from another team, similar to Penner?

by MrOmnipotent on Oct 6, 2010 4:35 AM EDT up reply actions

That had A LOT to do with this.

Really unhappy about Grabner getting waived and subsequently claimed by the Islanders. I’m really getting tired of the panthers being the team that gives up on a player only to have it bite them in the rear a short while later.

Then you picked the wrong team to root for my friend! :)

by Ryan Meier on Oct 5, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Only problem is, being born and raised in south Florida and being a dyed in the wool hockey fan it’s either this or hop onto another team’s bandwagon, and being a proud native Floridian, there’s absolutely no way I’m doing that.

Oh well, whatever…

Fingers crossed for Sunday night!

by JDMorris on Oct 5, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

thats how it is for very few people. Most down here hop on another teams wagon, for all sports(accept basketball now :) not just the panthers

by Colt1235 on Oct 5, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

No kidding. A lot of Heat fans were “manufactured” the past six months. I think south Florida sports fans are like Bahia grass, when they stink, they go dormant. When they win, they suddenly grow like crazy.

That being said, I know your pain JD. The Panthers made me a hockey fan back in 1993 and while it may be foolish, I’m not turning back now. I just wish they’d stop all this stupid kiddy-marketing crap. Go to a college rink and see what passionate hockey fans are like – that’s what we’ve been missing since they left the Miami Arena.

by badger737 on Oct 5, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m a big fan, and I have been since ‘93, and I live in PA. No matter how shitty this team is or will be, they’re still my team.

The Hockey Channel picked 5 Players in the whole league .....

That could have BREAK OUT years….Grabbner was one of the 5……..Can the Panthers mgmt do ANYTHING right……?

by LAUSMAN on Oct 5, 2010 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

Playing Devil's Advocate...

I’ve seen numerous reports here that Grabner has been non-existent in camp and terrible in games. Now, I didn’t expect the second coming of Pavel Bure, but that report leads one to believe that either he didn’t want to be here, or he’s not as good as being hyped.

Now, that doesn’t mean we don’t need some reasoning here from DeBoer and the front office. We do – because this move looks silly from the outside.

by badger737 on Oct 5, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I was at that game in Tampa. Guy looked completely out of his league. Seriously. He was on the first line in that game and make mistake after mistake. I knew he was gone by the end of the second period. He was a complete disaster.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by John Beatty on Oct 6, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I love to ask...

Dale exactly what his reasoning was for placing Grabs on waivers. Not that this franchise shouldn’t be somewhat used to it, but we’re getting killed nationally. Why not place Stillman or Bernier(like someone said earlier) on waivers if you needed a roster spot(unless there is something going on here we’re not aware of).

by Yzerfan on Oct 5, 2010 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

No kidding. Maybe Mike Keenan snuck back into the Panther front office in his Tallon Halloween costume – because this has crazy written on it in sharpie.

by badger737 on Oct 5, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Stiller’s on a one-way over-35 deal. And he’s a left wing.

I’ve said before, I think Tallon was more a product of the guys around him, than he himself in Chicago. He had Dudley as his main talent evaluator and he had Bowman and his father as assistants. Bowman made some great trades in gettin younger talent back in return for salary dumps, unlike the trade we saw Tallon do as a dump now, after waiving Grabner.

Mind you, Grabner was supposed to breakoutlast season as well, and went no where on a Vancouver team that was desperate for offense. It seems, it doesn’t matter who the GM is at GM Place, they all seem to be able to fleece the Panthers.

by MrOmnipotent on Oct 6, 2010 4:41 AM EDT reply actions

Quinton Howden might take exception to that, as would Matthias ;)
