Markstrom, Amerks garner first victory of season; defeat Marlies 4-2

Chuck Weber and the Amerks took their gritty lineup into LeafLand this afternoon, riding out an increasingly dangerous Toronto Marlies squad with a final score of 4-2 before 3,500 at Ricoh Coliseum.

The game marked a professional-career first for a number of Florida prospects, including Jacob Markstrom, Colby Robak, and Scott Timmins, among others.

Bill Thomas, Nathan Paetsch (yes, he's on loan from Vancouver), Michael Nylander, and Clay Wilson each hit the back of the net, with helpers from Robak (2), Timmins, Scott Reynolds, Brady Calla, Michal Repik, and Chris Clackson. Paul Baier and Robak each finished with a +3.

Alen Foster (SH) and Simon Gysbers (goalie pulled) scored for Toronto.

Markstrom stopped 21 shots in his North American pro debut, while the Marlies' James Reimer held off 31 Rochester attempts.

A solid start; precursor of better times ahead? Any observations from those who watched the game?

Need your help

OK, I’m still confused on this Michael Nylander situation. I get he’s on “loan” from Washington… what happens if we (the Panthers) want to call him up? Is that a possibility? Do we have to pay some loan fee? I guess I’m just used to the European soccer loan and transfer system without understanding how it works in this type of situation…

As he is WAS property, the cats cannot “recall” him, only the Capitals can.

Same with Paetsch and Peters in ROC (both belong to Van).

Teams with “ownership” pay their salaries as well.

Hm...

Ok, I get that, but then why are they able to play with FLA’s farm teams? Why isn’t Nylander sent to the Caps AHL team? How does this affect Florida’s (or Rochester’s) payroll? Are we (Rochester) paying their AHL salary? Just feels weird to me…

No room in Hershey, Caps pay salary. Strictly a loan.

The AHL in a nutshell

The thing to remember about farm clubs in the NHL is that for the most part they’re independent teams and in, I think, all cases, only a portion of the roster is signed by the NHL club, or clubs in the case of a shared affiliate. The remainder of the roster is signed directly by the AHL team. So, a good portion of the Americans roster are guys who will never get called up to the Panthers because they were signed to a contract by the Amerks, not the Panthers.

This, of course, extends to the ECHL. Some of the ECHL rosters are signed by the AHL affiliate (for call-up when the NHL club calls players up) and some are signed by the AHL affiliate. If there’s an NHL affiliate involved, then occasionally there are players signed to the NHL affiliate.

Additionally, as the AHL is a development league, there is a veteran limit. I forget the exact number of games played that qualifies a player for veteran status, but each team can only have 6 on the roster. Thus, NHL teams loaning players to other teams’ AHL affiliates. The Caps want Nylander playing so they don’t have to buy him out and they don’t want his salary to count against their cap, but there’s no room in Hershey, so they’ll basically send him anywhere that will take him. In this case, it’s Rochester. In Salak’s case, it was Farjestad in Sweden. In the Blackhawks’ case with Huet, it was Fribourgh-Gotteron in Switzerland.

The basic thing to remember is that the Rochester roster is not all Panthers players and the Panthers can only call up their own players.

If Panthers have interest in bringing any of them “up” – and they don’t – the players would have to be claimed with a bid from FLA if any were to hit re-entry waivers.

That, or trade for them. Again aint happening.

So basically...

Nylander is owned by the Caps, can be called up by the Caps, is paid by the Caps, but because there’s no room in their system, he plays for Rochester. Weird, but understood (I guess). For some reason, I am oddly looking forward to Florida’s season opening tomorrow night. I know we probably won’t win more than 30 games this year, but still…

On a completely unrelated note, I am loving Jonathan Quick’s retro, solid brown, old school leather looking pads. Hooray free Center Ice preview!

I miss Mike Liut’s 8-foot frame with the leather pads, glove, and blocker. Stunning.

So let me get this straight….we traded Peters and Paetsch to VAN, and now VAN is loaning them to our AHL team, the one they would have been sent to anyways?

by Colt1235 on Oct 10, 2010 1:39 AM EDT reply actions

Yes.

Took me a minute to swim through as well…but it’s all logical.

Simply loaning players out when they have no desire room for them within their own organization.

Call it the modern version of “future considerations”.

So it was a pretty good move by Tallon

by Colt1235 on Oct 10, 2010 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes. Vancouver didn’t want Hordichuk since he didn’t make their roster, so they traded for a guy on his way to the minors just to get rid of him. If they need Peters, they’ll call him up and if not, he’ll play in Rochester all season or get traded again at some point. As for Paetsch, Vancouver must have wanted a call-up, so they took him off our hands.
