Monday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
Today is the previously-agreed upon date for the Rochester Americans to either re-up as the Panthers' AHL affiliate, or bail for presumably greener pastures at the end of the current season. As recently as a few days ago, Amerks' president Lewis Staats publicly declared his club would "explore other options" if the Cats would not amend the deal to a more Americans-friendly situation (read: more roster control, among other items).
Like GM Dale Tallon really needed this headache; however, it does offer an opportunity for he and his staff to scout a potentially more advantageous opportunity elsewhere, with no previous "bad-blood" looming overhead.
Whatever the final outcome, we'll know soon.

Here we go again.....
Let’s get some STABILITY in this [dis] Organization….We can’t go bouncing around every few years trying to find new affiliates…We change affiliates like we change underwear. Let’s work with Rochester …They have one of the most consistent franchises in the AHL over the last 40 years……The winning teams in the NHL have a history of keeping the SAME affiliates for many years and iroining out the problems……Let’s just throw our hands up in the air like we always do and just run and find someone else for a few years…until we have to find someone else….ad infinitatum……….
Horton represented stability…

The Amerks have priorities, so do the Cats – all of which need to be discussed. The Cats need to have an AHL team that’s focused on their strategy of developing talent, just as much as the affiliates need to ice a competitive team. If those philosophies don’t match, staying together is foolish and will likely be detrimental to both parties. They need to have honest and open discussions and move forward from there, whether it be together or separately. That’s why I voted to support “instability” – it’s less about supporting instability as looking forward to what both teams need. Sometimes, those needs aren’t going to match and while unfortunate to lose a team with a rich history like the Amerks, ultimately the Panthers need to look out for their franchise’s well-being first.
The Panthers should keep the Americans as an affiliate only if they allow themselves to be renamed the Saveology.com Rochester JetBlues.

Amerks have also had a lot of instability prior to the Panthers taking things over. Ownership and Arena problems….I don’t see the Amerks getting picked up by another team or their choices being that great next season. You can’t dress an all veteran lineup so Amerks choices are defined by what other teams want to do if they go that route.
However, Panthers prospects have not grown up very well in Rochester, not sure if coaching staff is to blame or it is the Panthers lack of talent. maybe both! Let the Amerks walk only if the Panthers find another AHL team to farm to.
There were never any arena problems and the ownership issue was addressed in one season. Hardly what I’d call “a lot of instability.”
The Amerks can’t be at fault for prospects not growing. The Panthers provide the coaching and the players. Last season the Amerks paid for some better players and it was evident the way Dadonov and Repik improved. So far this season they did nothing until Chris Taylor (an Amerk) came back from an injury and helped them out.
The Panthers provide the coaching and the players.
Key piece of that argument.

I have to agree with Hawkseye...
The Panthers send “prospects” to Rochester to grow and mature, and when we finally get them back, little, if anything, has changed. I fail to see the benefit there.
I know the grass is always greener, but perhaps in this case, it really is. We’re not really seeing a huge benefit with what we have now. What do we really have to lose by changing affiliates? If you’re going to shake up an organization, you might as well shake it ALL up, not just parts of it.
Even when you change affiliates the Panthers still provide the players and coaches as they do now. I still don’t see how you can seem to blame Rochester for wanting a winner not just “development.” Any sports fan should want that.
Absolutely true. The Panthers have done just as terrible a job running the farm team as they have the big club. Is anyone really surprised?
Florida Panthers: Because at least you can go to the beach after a bad loss.
Absolutely agree that Rochester should want to be icing a winner and the Panthers should want them icing a winner too, as priority number two. However, the Panthers first priority should be icing a winner themselves and I think to achieve that, we need to develop our players. Unfortunately for the Amerks, it’s hard to win and market a team when the parent NHL team is as poorly managed as the Panthers have been.
would be easier but...
Obviously we need to trust Dale with all the moves now. Still quite early in the Tallon Era, don’t you think? Obviously a change like this is a big shock to the system so you have to weigh if the shock makes better sense than the continuity that puts the franchise at a disadvantage.
This game is still a Business!…As much as it hurt to see Guds go back to Kingston, I believe time will prove that too was the right move for the organization.
