Panthers prospects kick off opening day of WJC tourney
Hockey is back, albeit in international form, as the 2010 IIHF World Under 20 (Junior) Championship gets underway Sunday afternoon from Buffalo. We'll be following five Panthers prospects throughout the tournament, up to the Gold Medal match on January 5th.
Today's action - with a Florida bias - kicks off at 4 pm, with Russia taking on Canada; Cats' first-rounders Erik Gudbranson and Quinton Howden are featured.
At 8 pm Finland faces the United States in a game starring three Panthers products: Joonas Donskoi (FIN) hits the ice with American forwards Drew Shore and Nick Bjugstad.
None of the Florida prospects play again until Tuesday, which is just fine considering the Bruins visit Sunrise on Monday (live game chat, 6:30 pm).
Update: Gudbranson - CAN (1g), Howden - CAN (1a), Bjugstad - USA (GWG in OT), Shore - USA (no points, 0 SOG), Donskoi - FIN (no points, 2 SOG)

CAN defeats RUS, 6-3
Howden (with Sean Couturier) assisted on Gudbranson’s second period goal.

I would rather the #1 pick than a repeat of two years ago…or the last 10 in general. I dont even think we had #1 overall in the past 10 years
Not that was used.

Kind of incredible that three of these guys were taken in the first round…this year.

Howden will be better than Gudbranson. Howden has some serious puck handling skill and offensive instincts.
Gudbranson will bring whats sure to be a bloated contract (just watch his Gatorade commerical) and a skill set lesser than that of Pavel Trnka.
How so?
Not sure what rationale you are using to assess Gudbranson’s skill set. This guy is going to be the real deal, way better skater and puck handler than Trnka. Gudbranson is going to be the type of defenseman this franchise hasn’t seen since Jovocop.

Gudbranson has an attitude...
and that’s good!…He loves to hit and fight……He’s big…he’s tough and he’s like Jovocop…But I think he may be closer to a Pronger that likes to fight….He’s gonna’ be fun to watch……..
