Thursday Caterwaul - Panthers Open Forum
Yeah, they're looking up at eighth place in the standings, but considering the gap between the 6th and 13th spots (a ridiculous 5 points and eight clubs), nothing appears impossible or unrealistic. Especially in a season when a Heatley-less Ottawa squad has just capped their tenth straight victory.
What's on your mind today, mere hours from Friday's Jay Bouwmeester's return to the BAC?

“Ponikarovsky, a 29-year-old Ukrainian, has a decent shot, but his most desirable quality is an ability to stake his claim to a section of ice close to the crease and use quick hands to hammer home rebounds. Again, by virtue of size, he’s also pretty good down low, where he can protect the puck and work a good cycle with his linemates.”
sounds like what Olesz is supposed to do but somehow can’t understand all that well. any chance Sexton’s on the phone with Burke about Poni?
Who’d the leafs want for him though? Horton? Burke would probably try to sell Sexton on the virtues of Kessel playing in a low-pressure non-traditional hockey market. ( I have no idea how salary plays into this stuff- I am amazed teams can even trade players anymore, what, with all the strings attached)
I’m hoping we don’t lose Horton or Weiss now that they are actually starting to come to their potential. Yes, its been a totally inconsistent ride but I think with either a) a healthy and reinvigorated David Booth or b) a pure scorer on their line we’d see them hit their true potential and even out the inconsistency.
What I’d rather see is Horton and Frolik on a line with a big center (ummm… Shawn Matthias maybe) and Booth and Weiss on a line with a pure scorer. Those two work really well together, but Horton needs to be out there with a guy who can pass, get into the corners and outmuscle the defense and Weiss just isn’t that guy.
But I agree I don’t want to see those guys traded now. Olesz is a different story…

We can’t trade a forward for a forward, I don’t see how that improves our club (Unless it’s something like Olesz for Kovalchuk…) We have a stack of AHL talent that someone might be interested in, but unless we’re somehow 6-10 points out of it come March 3rd, I don’t see how we can give up on some of our top line talent for anything that will improve our chances this year.
I still think Ray Whitney makes a lot of sense. Carolina is looking for picks and prospects, Whitney has played here before and could waive his NTC to come back and help us get in the playoffs. I think he fits in on our top line until Horton comes back, and could slide in very nicely with Frolik and Stillman when Horton is back. Which puts Reinprecht, Olesz, and Moore on a 3rd line, and that actually sounds like 3 full lines that could actually chip in, instead of our line and a half that we have now. But this all sounds too good to make sense to the “hockey minds” we have running our organization, soooo I won’t be holding my breath.
I’m with you. I think if we see a trade for a forward, it’s Seidenberg who’s going. I hope not because I want to see the guy sign another contract here. But that would make the most sense. Barring, of course, an Olesz, pick and prospects for Kovalchuk kind of trade. But I really don’t think that’s happening. My instinct says we trade a d-man for a forward, pick up someone that someone else doesn’t want through waivers or a couple of picks or whatever, or that we do nothing.
Ray Whitney would be good if he was interested, depending on which prospects we’d have to give up. He’s 1000 years old, but so is Stillman and Whitney still has some speed.

Word on the street is Whitney wants a three year deal in order to waive his NTC.
Yikes.

Hey, you never open with your best offer. He’s a UFA after this year, right? If the Panthers offer him the chance to showcase himself- that might be enough to get him to agree to a trade. Guys say a lot of things, but the majority of players are competitors who want to win above all else.
