TSN's McKenzie: Atlanta's Kovalchuk to be "traded tonight"
He goes on to say via Twitter the destination is not the Rangers or Boston.
The Southeast landscape could be very different in a few hours. The Thrashers are all but certain to get a bountiful return to complement an already competitive club. SBN's Atlanta site Bird Watchers Anonymous has put in some sleepless nights on this story, and this evening looks to be no different.
Lotsa talk about the Devils so far.
Are the Panthers soon to be in serious catch-up mode? Stay tuned...
UPDATE: New Jersey it is. More to come as the info flows in, but In Lou We Trust and the aforementioned BWA are on it.

At first glance, this doesn’t appear to be a move designed to improve their club this year.

Neither one; it's Patrice Cormier that's packing.
I had hopes for him, but his constant elbowing recently made me feel otherwise.
The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL
The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back
The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: It's Kovy Time!
Thrashers = Panthers now...
Ilya was the one thing, imo, that set Atlanta apart from the Cats. One player, with big-time talent, who gave the Thrashers a huge box office benefit. Now? Who knows.
I’m sure he’ll do well in Joisey.
Good call, M’Lord.
Don’t know about the box office benefit in ATL, but you’re right in that FLA and the Thrashers are a lot more similar on paper. Though I’d argue Weiss – and probably Reinprecht – are better than any centers Atlanta currently employs. Again, on paper.

well, if I’m a Panther fan (and let’s face, I am a closet Panther’s fan) this trade is good on a couple of levels.
1. Atlanta is a lot weaker today and no matter what spare parts the Thrashers got for Kovy, they did serious damage to a fairly competitive team.
2. I’m thankful I’m not a Thrasher fan. Yes, I’ve whined and moaned about the management here in S. FL, about their dumb trades and their cheap signings, but to lose your franchise player for a bag of pucks, is pretty lousy. ( I may be in the minority, but I didn’t count the d-man, I cannot mention by name as a franchise player). This may be closer to when Roberto was traded.

good news for Panther Fans
Considering the original list of teams int. in Kovi……we can take a sigh of Relief…….We don’t have to worry about facing off with Jersey for the 8 th spot and if Jersey is a better team now…..they can even help us out.
