Florida Panthers trade Jordan Leopold to Pittsburgh Penguins

And the cards begin to fall: pending league approval, Florida defenseman Jordan Leopold has been dealt to Pittsburgh for a second-round pick in 2010, as reported by GR's Twitter page.

I'm calling this a steal for the Cats; another soon-to-be UFA has been converted into a decent spot at this year's draft. Solid.

I agree, big steal. Nothing lost in that trade. Panthers can just bring up ellerby or garrison to replace him.

Agreed

A fine move.

NY Jets = NFL's Chicago Cubs

There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.

Kind of disappointing...

…considering Sexton set the bar sooo high by wrangling a second-rounder out of MTL for Dom Moore.

I kid, I kid.

Good move for both. A 2nd doesn’t always pan out but should net the Panthers a decent prospectm, or another trading chip.

The Pens just need a new body and new blood defensively, hopefully Leopold can provide it.

Good but...

I just can’t get it out of my mind that we ended up with a 2nd (Josh Birkholz) and a 3rd round draft pick for Jay Bouwmeester when there was rumored to be so much on the table at last year’s deadline. I know you can’t link the two situations and players, and we got a somewhat decent year out of Leopold, but still…. It’s going to take a few seasons for Martin’s stench finger prints to be fully removed.

Sorry, other way around, Birkholz was the 3rd rounder from last year, we get another 2nd round this year.

Ahhh... so that's what he meant by no fire sale?

Hrmmm… Not that I think this is a bad move. Just wondering what Sexton’s thinking. We’re definitely stockpiling the draft picks. My assumption is that he’s getting them to sweeten whatever deals he wants to attempt in the summer. And if not, then we’ll get a bunch of prospects, which we need anyway.

Garrison should get lots of ice time the rest of the season, thats probably the best part about this trade. The pick will be the 55-60th so it’s only a sliver better than a 3rd rounder.

I actually would rather see Ellerby called up to replace Leopold, he can provide some offense. however, I have a feeling that the Panthers will be bringing up botth Ellerby and Garrison by wednesday.

GR states that Sexton staying home to work on NHL trade….Sounds like Seidenberg is next.

Which invites another question: who plays second fiddle to Sexton? Birch? O’Flaherty? According to the club, there’s no official “Assistant General Manager”.

Everyone – on both sides – appear content with this deal. No controversy whatsoever.
