Panthers doom host Sharks with 3-2 come-from-behind OT win

As this one wore on, it was evident Florida defenseman Bryan Allen was having himself a Big Night.

Star-divide

Finishing with 29:18 TOI (second in the game to teammate Bryan McCabe), the Kingston native stamped his best all-around performance of the season with 1g, 1a, +2, 3 SOG and the gamewinner in overtime.

Against San Jose, which led 2-0 going into the second period. Truly incredible. If anyone wagered on the Cats to pull out a victory over the NHL's second-ranked club, they're swimming in coin right about now.

The Panthers - offering up a flat, emotionless first frame - came out a changed and salvaged bunch for the second, and continued to improve to a point where the third was owned by Florida. Full kudos to coach DeBoer and his staff for not letting this one end the way logic demanded it would.

Keith Ballard and Shawn Matthias (2 points, +3) also scored for the visitors, while Tomas Vokoun stopped 37 shots. Radek Dvorak ended the day with 2 assists (+2).

More to come in a bit...

I was visiting my parents and watched the first two periods before we left to have dinner with my grandparents. Liz looked skeptical when I said that if the Panthers played the third like they did the second they had a good chance of tying it up and forcing overtime.

I was happily surprised when I saw the final later on. I’ll have to watch the last period tonight if I can find it.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it in April. Looks like we’re figuring out how to win just in time to climb back up to 9th place. How is this a better team with Garrison and Ellerby making up a third of our D full time? Whatever.

I don’t want to say I’m rooting for our team to lose out, I hate when teams tank (or at least appear to) to increase their draft pick. Buuuuut… lets say I’m rooting for the teams around us to win more?

Whatever?

I’ve been wondering how much Garrison’s physical play has been helping the team and also whether Seidenberg and Leopold are really as good as I thought they were.

As for the draft, I’m not too concerned about where the Cats pick, as long as they choose wisely. I mean, suppose you’re waiting to select the guy on top of your draft board and the team in front of you drafts some huge kid with no hands. It’s like you just moved up a spot in the draft ;)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m impressed\surprised\glad that Garrison and Ellerby have stepped up. But its just not those 2. It’s amazing what happens when people count you out and pride steps in. Everyone seems to be working a little harder and, go figure, they look like an NHL team. So where was the work ethic when they had NHL talent on the roster?

Exactly Why Culture Change Is Needed

Karl: I fully agree with your comments. I wonder myself and have posted often lately on my blog that there is a much needed culture change in the room.
Certain players have been here too long and are associated with losing and it’s time to cut ties with them.

How is it that we seem to play better now with no pressure? Beating San Jose was no small task, although they may have sat back on the lead, but since when were we able to sniff that out and take advantage of it?
