SHOCKER
This will be the second time this season Colin Campbell suspends Ovie right before a his son’s game against the Caps. Still waiting for the Matt Cooke suspension. Oh, wait, the Panthers don’t play the Penguins anytime soon.
No worries, expect two goals from Brooks Laich, three assists from Backstrom and I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Matt Bradley gets the Gordie Howe hat trick.
BTW- The Caps can lose every game the rest of the season and still win the SE Division
I love crazy predictions!
I’m calling Vokoun shut out tomorrow night. Then 4 consecutive Vokoun shutouts against the Caps in a month.
Crazy preidictions
2 goals for Brooks Laich
1 goal, 1 assist for Backstrom
Semin did pick up a penalty(roughing)
Disappointed, no. If I had tickets or was planning on going, I would be disappointed that OV isn’t playing, but i’m not, so oh well. I don’t think it’ll have much impact on the game, though…
On the suspension itself, is this based on a “repeat offender” kind of suspension? I didn’t think the hit itself was as bad as some others I’ve seen this season that went unpunished. Yea, it was from behind, sort of. And yea, it was dangerous, as any hit at that 5-8 feet distance from the boards can be. But it wasn’t high, it wasn’t a blind side, it wasn’t late or away from the play. He got a 5 and a game, which was probably the right call. But 2 more on top of it? Gotta think this was based on his growing reputation as a guy who plays on the other side of that line too often. And maybe because the next 2 games are against Florida and Carolina, and who really cares if the Great 8 doesn’t play? No ones gonna be watching anyways.
I think it was a set the tone type of suspension
Some refs give out penalties to express disapproval with the direction a game is going. The play gets too chippy, someone gets an ‘unfair’ penalty, the teams get the message and concentrate more on hockey, and the parents scream and yell at the ref from the stands.
In this situation, as the gentleman’s above post indicates, the Caps have nothing to lose. So the league gets to send a message (“we just finished the Olympic love in with the casual fan/ save it for the playoffs”) while not really upsetting the overall order.
I guess…?
It’s likely a repeat offender suspension, as that was his third game misconduct this season. But the system is so screwed up, who really knows?
Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.
That's a better theory than mine.
Is that a new(er) rule about the misconducts? I have a hard time getting around the NHL.com site and I can only find the ‘on-ice’ rules.
I don't think so.
If he is, then that would be ridiculous. Otherwise, he’d be a target to any team, that faces a suspension dished out by his father, when they play against him again.
Not for the Caps
The Caps are 9-2-1 when Ovie is kicked out of games or suspended. The way the Caps get back at the NHL or other games is simply by winning. That really is the best medicine. How did the Caps react yesterday after losing Ovie and being down 3-0 in the Third Period to the third best team in the NHL? By scoring three goals in three minutes and winning in OT. Ovie needs a rest anyway. Gotta give Crosby a chance at the scoring title.
Suspension warranted
Sorry to say, but Ovechkin has been known for his reckless behavior in the past. Is he a victim of that now? Maybe, however this play was senseless and he knew better.
The hit or shove came long after Campbell got rid of the puck, yes he knew that Ovie was behind him, but Ovie did NOT have to hit him.
I am all for finishing checks and love the physicality of the game.
But this was a senseless play and Ovie got what he deserved.
Shame on Mike Milburry and Pierre McStooge on NBC for worring more about the ratings then the health of Campbell who is lost for the remainder of the season.
The NHL also has “egg” on their face when you compare this to the Matt Cooke hit. cooke should ahve gotten at least ten games. He is a liability and Boston needs to serve justice thursday night.
As for tonights game, not having Ovie doesn.t mean things will be any easier for the Panthers.
I don’t know why anyone continues to give Milbury a job. He’s an idiot. I think the Cooke hit might have lit that fire under the GM’s asses. Perhaps they’re getting tired of watching their best players hurt on senseless plays.

especially since Cooke is a repeat offender. He adds nothing to the NHL
