Tuesday Caterwaul - Panthers GameDay Open Forum
In a Florida fan's world of B-List free agents, playoff teases, and urologist-sponsored toilets, it's simply not enough to face the Eastern Conference-pacing Capitals minus their best player: drama must ensue.
With Alexander Ovechkin now suspended two games for his hit on Chicago's Brian Campbell - including tonight's in Sunrise - there exists a small contingent of hockey fans who claim bias from the NHL executive who ruled on the matter: league disciplinary czar Colin Campbell. What possible favoritism could be in play? Campbell's son Gregory is a Panther. (Got to wonder who still may have been unaware of that fact...)
Brushing aside the inevitible confusion resulting from three principals in this affair sharing a surname and the smashingly obvious opportunities for a sitcom pilot ("My Three Soups"?), I must agree there is the potential for an appearance of bias, given (Colin) Campbell's ruling directly affects a game in which his son's club is involved.
In previous matters regarding the Panthers, Campbell the Elder typically recuses himself from the disciplinary process in an effort to eliminate the perception of favoritism, but not in this case. All the more confounding considering Ovie's suspension was not automatic.
Alex The Great remains just that, and everyone will have forgotten all about this when Washington squares off against Pittsburgh in a week.
What is a problem has been the Caps' having no difficulty gutting the Cats all year - with or without Ovechkin: A 26-12 goal differential in five games fleshes that out pretty handily.
Anyway, lots going on at Japers' Rink considering the subject matter, so do check that out as well. I'll be at the game this evening (finally!) but the Live Game Forum will fire up 'round 6pm or so.

Caps fan here. I figured Florida fans might understand our frustration, given the controversy of the Richards hit on Booth.
On a related note, I’m excited to finally get to see Booth play again. He’s a fun player to watch. Good luck tonight (but not too much!).
"Now wait a minute. This is just purely a social call. You know, just two adults getting a stew on, man."

Thanks, Ghost. Losing Booth for 45 games was a tad frustrating.

Oh, just a little, but man I enjoyed watching the game where he faced the Flyers the first time after coming back. Gotta give Richards credit, though – he was a man about it. Wonder if Matt Cooke will do the same the next time he comes face to face with Marc Savard, although that’s not where I’d put my money.
Still, glad he’s back, It’s never cool to see a guy get hurt like that.

But Savard won’t be in the lineup. I’m thinking his season’s done.
All the same, I will smile and send Milan Lucic little love letters if he does to Cooke what he did to Mike Van Ryn.

Can't wait
Can’t wait to get to the game.
Two things:
1) Even non-hockey fans would call Ovie’s “hit” on Brian Campbell simply a push
2) Colon Campbell didn’t recuse himself when he suspended Ovie on December 1 in which the Caps’ next game was against, ahem, the Panthers( 6-2 Caps win)
My prediction:
Since the Caps are 5-0 and have outscored the Panthers 27-12 this season, I’m going with the averages.
5-2 Caps victory
You obviously didn’t realize Nick Tarnasky is in the lineup for FLA…

You should have said so earlier!
Not even necessary to play the game then. Automatic Cats win.
Meh. Caps are still scoring at a good clip, but not as good as they were in some of those games. Their game has shifted a little bit – you can tell they’re thinking playoff hockey. Besides, Vokoun’s been good all year.

Caps fan here...
This ought to be an interesting game… I was down in your arena in January, and wanted to compliment you on several things:
- The concessions were fantastic. MUCH better than we get at the Verizon Center.
- The arena is just beautiful. Wide corridors, plenty of space, not claustrophobic at all (unlike some arenas I’ve visited).
- The fans are a great bunch of people. Very nice folks.
I had a great time down there, and I’m looking forward to tonight’s game too, even though I’m back home now. :-)

Agreed completely, IRock. There’s something to be said for large vista windows and expansive views of the Everglades. Unique in all the league.

Interesting stat...
Stephen Weiss has 29 points (11 goals) in 36 games against WAS. Far better than I had imagined.
Very well put.
I just had to respond to some facebook lame status saying that he deserved it in which i responded
“oh please, that hit wasnt THAT bad. they were skating to the boards and he had the puck when he was initiating his contact. If he were 2-3 feet closer to the boards he wouldn’t have got hurt. I have no problem with a superstar willing to throw a hit once in a while it is just unfortunate that Campbell got hurt.
That being said, I don’t mind him being suspended for tonight’s game in Florida."
His hit wasnt nearly as dirty as Cooke’s or even Mike Richards on Booth. Im fine with the game misconduct but I don’t see the suspension as being necessary, just a lucky break for our club.
first off, yes, I am a Flyer fan first, but a Panther fan second, so the continued reference of Richard’s hit to Booth as being dirty irks me a little bit. I must also say that Booth is my favorite player, probably outside of Richards, so I don’t have as much bias as say, the typical Philly fan, so let’s look at all these incidents in context.
The Richards hit on Booth is an example of a player coming across the center of the ice with their head down. The more realistic comparisons are Scott Stevens hits on Kariya and before that Lindros. Yes, some consider them dirty, but in the context of the game, they are an example of what happens when you skate with your head down. Also, Richards has zero history of dirty hits, which makes his intent on the Booth hit, more an unfortunate series of events than malicious intent. Richards also answered the bell on more than one occassion, first fighting McCabe and then Booth himself. Yes, I find it unfortunate that Booth missed 45 games (and so does my fantasy team), but sometimes these things happen.
Cooke in this same context has a well-documented history of dirty play, which makes his hit on Savard clearly different than Richards from the perspective that history itself tells us that Cooke’s actions/intent was probably more clearly set on injuring Savard, then simply checking a player.
Finally, AO, at this point as well, has a long documentation on his “reckless” play which again leads context to his push on Campbell. While, if this was an isolated incident and AO had not shown a history of dangerous play, this play might have fallen in the category of unfortunate incidents, but it doesn’t based on Ovechkin doing this more than once in his career. So for someone to say “well, if he would have been 2 feet closer to the boards…” is fine if Ovechkin had never shown a careless disregard for other players safety (which he clearly has not) thus leading me more to think Ovechkin deserved far more than a 2 game suspension at this point. Furthering this point, arguing that if Campbell was 2-3 feet closer to the boards, could also lead me to say that if Booth hadn’t been looking at his pass over his shoulder, the Richards check would have resulted in him falling to the ground, instead of getting concussed…..it’s all relative.

There’s intent to injure and then there’s being reckless. Even though Ovechkin has been known to slew-foot and show intent to injure, this time it was just recklessness. I agree with the suspension, because it’ll send the message out that he isn’t immune to discipline, and he needs to reduce the consistency in his game of putting other players in danger.
