And for the invocation:

Hockey Gods, please let us get a great deal today. Let the Panthers actually get someone good in exchange for once. We beseech you to not let us have a Luongo situation, for we have suffered mightily for so long due to cruel fate.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 10:28 AM EST reply actions

Speaking of bad trades, does anyone else think Pitt stole Ponikarovsky from the Leafs?

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

The flightless birds are doing very well this trade period. 2 great pickups that fill holes they have or upgrade.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Highway Robbery occured in Toronto yesterday.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

And from Stu Siegel via Twitter:

Working hard today toward making moves to improve our team’s future. This is just 1st steps of multi-month process.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 10:29 AM EST reply actions

Are we going to get Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin?

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

probably someone else not being talked about as top two picks…

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Right….and that’s why all the Amerks are at practice this morning and Vokoun is talking to the media. Action speaks louder than words.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

Not Panther related, but PHX gets Derek Morris, BOS gets future considerations

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 10:35 AM EST reply actions

sorry, Bos gets 4th rounder in 2011

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

I’d say Phoenix got a deal there.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

What’s the definition of “excited”, anyway? I say blow ’em up

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

I agree. blow it up good!

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

I haven't been "EXCITED" about the Panthers

since they dropped those garbage third jerseys on us.

NY Jets = NFL's Chicago Cubs

There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.

by TheFinReaper on Mar 3, 2010 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

If by excited you mean for the 2011-12 season, then I would think so. Lol

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Anyone find a live feed from TSN or SportsNet that DOESN’T require Canadian residency???

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:49 AM EST reply actions

No, been trying all morning while trying to work, but can’t get it.

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

it’s just audio though, maybe NHL.com has video

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, all the other features work fine; was hoping for video…see what I can do

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

even a lvie radfio feed from somewhere would be good

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, but things may not start happening for another hour or so, and they will probably keep going until 5:00

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

Could keep going longer than that, supposedly the Poni trade happened yesterday, didnt see it until this morning

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

Leafs didn’t play him, so it was pretty obvious something was up

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

Yes. That reminds me…I’ll post up another link in a minute regarding deadline “rules”

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

the true barometer of this season: Carolina, who is in shambles, is now only one point behind us and holders of more wins. there is nothing left for this season, so Randy needs to get what he can now.

a shame we’ll probably see the last of Seidenberg, as he’s a player i think could really help by being around for the long haul, totally underrated and a great sign by Sexton this summer. there has been lots of talk, but besides Reinprecht (who he got for virtually nothing), i think Sexton has done pretty well thus far with his hands tied. today will go a long way to see if he should be the man to steer this rebuild.

one other thought: would love to see T-Vo and Markstrom in net next year, so lets get Clemmers off the bench, he looked uncomfortable yet again last night. too bad no one wants him.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 10:57 AM EST reply actions

CAR will make the playoffs if they keep Whitney. But they won’t.

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Nothing we can do with Clemmer; stuck for two more years unless Jersey wants him back for next-to-nothing

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

i agree, but what happens if/when we trade T-Vo? we get a Huet-type in return to mind the net next season also along with Markstrom? i think a T-Vo trade sets us back for next year also, unless we get a solid goalie in return…

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

My opinion is that I have zero confidence in Randy Sexton straightening this out.

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

i think we need to give him a chance…we haven’t really seen him work yet and at least he was honest enough to call the scoring issue “f—king brutal”….thats honesty you don’t see out of GM’s or Front Office Figureheads in sports very often.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

and what kind of rebuild are we talking about? 1,2 or 5 years?
—-they were discussing that on TSN in regards to the Leafs, and they seemed to be certain the Leafs need quite a few more years to fix their mess

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 10:59 AM EST reply actions

My guess would be two years, we’ve had some guys working in the minors that I think could be brought up, and so far there has been little talk of a rebuild involving dismantling the core of this team, Booth, Weiss and Horton.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

wasn’t good enough for us

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Well, they did sign Seidenberg. And I think Skoula got dropped because they decided Kulikov was going to play, which I think was the right decision. I wasn’t sure at the time, but he’s been developing well here even with all of the problems.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

Oh yeah. I think that was when they realized the coaching staff wasn’t too big on Koistenen. But Skoula I believe was originally let go in favor of Kulikov. They weren’t sure at camp if he was going to make the team, so they brought in Backman and Skoula as backup.

And don’t forget, he’s only played 33 games for Pittsburgh. It’s not like we let a gem go.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

if u get the comcast sports package, you can watch that feed on tv on the nhl network

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions

Eklund confirming Florida wants Jeff Carter for Vokoun. Take that with a pound of salt of course.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 11:06 AM EST reply actions

tried that last time for Jay, but didn’t happen. Don’t see it happening here either.

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

At least, he did not say Richards. ROFL.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

Yea freaking right that happens. I’d love it, so of course it would not come to pass.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

wouldn’t that be something, T-Vo traded to Philly on deadline day when we play them…

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

There’s no way the Flyers can fit Vokoun in their salary cap. If Voky goes, it won’t be to Philly.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

One of their current goalies would have to go and they have no trades.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

Same reason they supposedly gave up on Roloson. They need to salary dump first. Trading Carter would free up that space…

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

actually, if the panthers get Carter, they could feasibly fit Vokoun under the cap.

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 3, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

I was talking about the Flyers’ cushion, not the Panthers’ which is a good deal larger. Looking at it from the Flyers end, they need to lose a well-paid forward to get a goalie. Carter seems the most likely.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

yes, I was talking about the Flyers cap as well. I don’t think the Panthers have much of a cap issue. Sorry, i wasn’t clear.

The Flyers could afford Vokoun in several ways, getting rid of Carter is one of them, also dealing Gagne or Hartnell, they could also deal Carle and another roster player…

You have to remember they did get some cushion by shutting Emery down for the year.

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 3, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

I misread. I think we were saying the same thing. Yeah, Gagne is always a possibility, but I think more teams would be interested in Carter. Who knows, though? I wouldn’t be too unhappy to get Oglethorpe Hartnell, though I’d prefer Carter.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

hey coaster, do you have any link saying the vokoun-carter rumors?

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions

Its from Eklund’s tweet, like I said you need to take it with a pound of salt. Eklund is so bad.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

Or see if he got it from another source. Some of the stuff yesterday was from other peoples’ tweets.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

I’ve been looking, don’t see it mentioned that specifically by anyone else. But you never know.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

it came from Eklund, it must be false.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions

btw, does anyone here PAY for his information? because you’re a fool if you do. i can make up rumors just like he can….

where do his media credentials come from?

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

He doesn’t have any.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

he did in Vancouver….just saying. it makes me mad because i can EASILY write what he does, but i wouldn’t charge.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

perpetually false. had panthers getting Tanguay, had them offering up Booth, just lots of nonsense….

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

good rebuttal evidence, thanks.

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

you’re cool in my book alter

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

and its not just me, and the fellow litterboxers on here…..check out the message boards attached to each of his blogs and the rest of NHL stuff you can find, they’re usually filled with comments about how the rumors are false…on his own website!!!

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

Twitter says Seidenberg may go. But that’s nothing new. Also supposedly LA is interested in Ray Whitney. Not that that involves the Panthers.

Florida Panthers: Giving the league a punching bag since 2000.

by Johnny B on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST reply actions

I think LA’s been interested in Whitney for awhile, but Whitney wants to stay on the east coast and wants an extension before a trade is done.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

bring him down here! and im serious, he was a maajor fan favorite and can still score.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

obviously i know im dreaming, a 40-year old doesn’t fit in “rebuilding plans.”

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

okay, theyre talking goalies on nhl network…

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST reply actions

don’t be so harsh. he doesn’t have 627 wins because he’s stupid! :)

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

you’re right, but where did his touch go when he came to SoFla?

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

My hatred of Keenan springs eternal.

And about his wins, I think he came here for a vacation and to stock up any future employers.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

Panthers have called up Ellerby

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:16 AM EST reply actions

… to replace Seidenberg, I’d venture a guess.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

I would think so but stranger things have happened.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Where’d you see it, Hawks? Got a link? Trying to stay on the up-and-up

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Wozniak twitter feed.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

P.S. wozniak said that Ellerby had just left the building. But seriously, those amerks might as well leave on the same flight together. LOL

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

3 2nd round draft picks…one from Montreal, one from Tampa (via Boston), and one from Pittsburgh.

by panthersfan27 on Mar 3, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

You mean they won’t just let Kulikov play more to replace Seids…? That was their response to letting Leopold go, and that worked wonders last night.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

will anyone be at game tonight? also, whats the deal with draft picks? is there a lottery or what?

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:17 AM EST reply actions

ha, 7 dollar tickets at the box office gets you in, the mass amounts of empty seats lets you sit anywhere.

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

clem ain’t a bargaining tool. he’s moot

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

I wish that they would trade him. If they dont trade vokoun, trade clemmenson. dump salary.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

@nhlrumor Panthers/Oilers are both busy… Panthers probably won’t trade Vokoun, Stillman talks heating up though.

A Stillman trade would make me smile

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Stillman I doubt. I could see Oslez going there. Oilers are not in the playoff hunt.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

I think it just meant both are talking, not necessarily to each other though.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Could see Rusty in EDM. He’s their type: fast, lacking in production, and expensive

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

LMAO

That sums up Toronto too

by Bill Jempty on Mar 3, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

I started

Clem bashing after his 6-5 performance against Dallas and 7-4 against Washington. Not to mention that game he gave up two goal in two minutes early this season.

by Bill Jempty on Mar 3, 2010 11:26 AM EST reply actions

the 2 early goals thing seems to be recurring nightmare with Clemmers….

Whale, remember how excited we were for him on July 1st?

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

if they get Carter in the deal for T-Vo….

a) who else or what else comes with?
b) are we as fans happy?

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 11:26 AM EST reply actions

1st and 3rd round pick 2010 and STARTING rochester goalie prospect + defense prospect + Carter.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Just can’t see them giving up Carter, but he’s all they can move

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Trade people may not have noticed

Chicago picked up Hannu Toivonen a couple of days ago. The Blackhawks must really be desperate at goalie.

by Bill Jempty on Mar 3, 2010 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Are you sure that they are not just STOCKING UP for a big trade. That’s what I think.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

can’t figure it out, tried….can you do it please?

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 11:33 AM EST reply actions

by Bill Jempty on Mar 3, 2010 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Just a fun thought… we’ll have Ellerby, Garrison, and Kulikov playing for the rest of the season, who combine for about 1 full NHL seasons worth of games…

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Even more fun

Clem in goal if TVO gets traded. That red light behind the panther goal may burn out before season’s end.

Don't get me wrong

I like those guys except for Clem. They’re just green.

by Bill Jempty on Mar 3, 2010 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

Yea, I don’t have a problem with it. Ellerby and Garrison are going to be (or at least projected to be) NHL defensemen, the more playing time they get this season, the better. And if it means we get a higher 1st round pick this summer, that’s OK with me.

No it does not. Panthers picked up two forwards today. It is possible that Repik could be returned to Rochester. Rochester can also pick up another defenseman since the next game is not till Friday.

maybe Crosby’s big head will shrink a little knowing that Americans don’t think much of him besides his hockey skills. He’s no God to us.

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

I just can’t believe people are still comparing him to Gretzky… There’s no flippin way he’s that good.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

he and ovechkin would argue they both are. But no, they’re not. Maybe IF in many years they keep the level of play. But they’re really just assholes.

by SunriseIceAxe on Mar 3, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

come on, like anyone else would have scored that goal for Canada?

love him or hate him, he’s a winner plain and simple.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Sure he’s a winner, but people forget the level of talent that existed before him, and will likely exist after him. He shouldn’t be touted as the end all be all of hockey like he is.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

agreed, but he and Ovechkin are by far the best players in the league in my opinion. and i put Ovi ahead.

just like there’ll never be another Jordan, there’ll never be another Gretzky. no Kobe or LeBron or Sidney or Alex or Evgeni

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

I put Ovi ahead too, it’s a shame he got stuck on a team with 9 KHL’ers. Russia tried to hoist its own league, and got punished badly by it. Not to mention frickin Medvedev is now calling for the resignation of all officials in charge of Russian sports lol!

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

I watch the Caps play all the time. Ovie is a great player, but not a leader and seems to act like a “kid”. He needs to grow up a bit. He also did not play very well for team Russia, and was a nonfactor. In fact, the CAPS played just as well without him on the team and play better defensively.

Ovie is not even close to the caliber as Crosby in a team environment. When Ovie decided to grow up, the Caps will be completely unstoppable. Until then, Ovie will be second in the NHL no matter what his STATS are.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Good point. I might even place Ovie third behind H. Sedin, another solid team player.

Big time sore losers but that’s when everyone should worry. Do you think that it would be embarassing for the organization if they cannot make anymore trades today?

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions

No…if they don’t it will be bacause they felt no offers were up to their standards according to whatever plan they have in place.

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Unless most are headed to waivers because nobody wants them. Does Kreps and Campbell really have value when they have three goals between them all season?

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

I’m leaning toward yes, we have to move guys like Kreps, Olesz, Stillman, and Reinprecht at the very least before they can completely tank any value they may have built.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

I think so too. You dont send an owner letter out like that unless you are moving more than 3 players….

I'm still sour on trading Stu Barnes for Chris Wells

and letting Martin Straka go…

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

u think so really? Vokoun has been the best player on the Cats the last two years….by far this year, and last year only Booth was close.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yes because we have no offense. We could have used those draft picks for offensive players. We did not need a high priced goalie, we needed offense that has been a recurring theme with this organziation. They could have used those picks for a SCORER. Hopefully, they have learned their lesson…

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

sounding eerily familiar like Bouwmeester last year.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

except this is probably the right move, trading JayBo at the deadline last year would have been the right move, but we waited and standardly screwed it up.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

well still an hour to go….something could be worked out still.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno, at the deadline last year I was thinking the only reason to trade J-Bo is if the offer coming back was stacked with goal scorers. We weren’t in the position we are now where we need to stockpile draft picks. I was OK with keeping J-Bo at the deadline when the offers weren’t what we needed.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

#Flyers focus shifting to “depth” at forward and defense. Goalie upgrade is off the boards. Price was too steep for Vokoun, complicated cap

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 1:52 PM EST reply actions

I’m OK with Vokoun staying through the deadline, he’s not a free agent and can still be moved in the off season. Plus, I think any decline in his numbers from now til then can be explained away by the changes in personnel.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

and Hopefully the Panthers dont whack anyone over the head again….

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Here’s a thought, Theodore and Flieshman of the caps for vokoun. Never going to happen , but could be a good move for both teams. Theodore is UFA next season.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 2:00 PM EST reply actions

Panthers are gonna need someone to fill the hole next season before Markstrom is ready. Unless Vokoun loves the tropical climate, I don’t see him willing to stick around on a rebuilding team… again. He’s at the peak of his career.

Panthers have not asked Vokoun to waive NTC, per thefourthperiod. I’d be highly, highly surprised if Vokoun isn’t in net tonight for the Cats.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I know there’s still time, but I’m starting to feel disappointment creeping into the back of my head. The guys I liked (but we likely wouldn’t resign) have been moved, and the guys I can’t stand watching skate are still here! Our team must be so bad that it would require months over the off season to find takers.

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 2:13 PM EST reply actions

its crazy that u say that because i feel the same way…its pretty sad

by peterbiz09 on Mar 3, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

not to say we didn’t get a good return for the players we did trade… but theres still a lot of dead weight on this team

by peterbiz09 on Mar 3, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

I’m kinda leaning the other way. Guys that we could move, we did, and we got 2nd round picks for them even though they’re UFA’s in July. Moving Olesz, Stillman, Campbell, Kreps, Allen, etc was going to be tough, because they aren’t worth anything. I’m impressed we got what we did for the guys we knew (and everyone in the league knew) had to be dealt.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

i still think Vokoun is staying, maybe we’ll see Stillman or Rhino gone? who knows?

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think Rheinprecht would have been a tradeable piece, except he’s gone in the tank since January has become a giant waste of a roster spot.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Still got some value, tho. Some could use him as a third-line rental. An expensive rental, but there.

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

But are we willing to give him up for a 6th round pick and a bag of pucks?

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

I think it says a lot about the structure of what we had this year. What would be a 3rd line depth move for most teams was a #2 scoring center move for us… sigh.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

the loss of Zednik and Peltonen was the probelm, they were very speedy guys like Dvorak. Their replacements were not the same.

If anyone else is going from Florida, who’s it gonna be? Stillman and Reinprecht probably the most likely, I’ve also seen Olesz and Dvorak in the rumor mills… I think one more move for a decent pick\prospect and you can call the deadline a success for the Panthers. Right now, I’d put it at the B- level.

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:32 PM EST reply actions

maybe another 2nd round pick lol

by peterbiz09 on Mar 3, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Olesz is too pricey to trade unfortunately. And I really like the guy.

I’d love to get another 2nd rounder, 2 more would be awesome – we’d have 5!

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

Since most players have been role player type guys,
I think that Oslez, Dvorak, and Stillman…Who knows? Maybe Sexton has a litte bidding war giong on because he seems to be doing well with the trades so far.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

I would love to see the Panthers pickup a guy like Carlson or Alzner from the Caps. I doubt though that top prospects are available from any team right now.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

they should be dangling T-Vo in their face….washington’s that is.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

they keep saying they have an excess of forwards…and need a goalie….

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

All their talk and no action is why they can’t beat the Pens, look at all the moves the Pens have made the past two deadlines, and look at the Caps…

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

you may be right, because the goaltending situation is iffy in DC and they have the assets to improve it.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

and the Pens have found the ways to fix their holes this year and last….

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

Caps picked up Belanger and Walker. It’s going to be hard to beat them when they score 5 goals a game no matter who’s in net…

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

I think Ponikarovsky and Leopold outdoes Walker and Belanger

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

The in-division factor does come into play, if T-Vo was going to Washington there would be a higher price to pay for the Caps.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

agreed, but worth a shot. personally, i dont mind trading him in-division

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t mind it either IF they paid the premium price for him.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

can’t believe Philly wouldn’t make the deal either…always lacking a goalie and never fix it.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:46 PM EST reply actions

my gut tells me the Panthers are done for today.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 2:46 PM EST reply actions

however, TSN just said 12 trades came in after 3:00pm last year

Still a few hours of open window for last minute submissions.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Wonder how much of this slow deadline day has to do with the fact that there are only 4, maybe 5 teams who were looking to be sellers and so many teams still in the hunt. There weren’t many top teams that were going to get a top 6 forward from anyone because, for the most part, those top 6 forwards are on teams that aren’t willing to give them up cuz they’re in the 8-10 spots?

by Karl Selvig on Mar 3, 2010 3:04 PM EST reply actions

If Sexton did nothing else, does that put his job in jeopardy? Summer time is usually hiring time.

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 3:08 PM EST reply actions

funny you ask, i tweeted that very question at Stu today. doubt i’ll get an answer.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

If he made deals for a deals sake, then we would have more of the Luongo type trades, and everyone would be bitching about that.

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

agreed, and that’s why T-Vo is still around.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Would we all really cry over Rhino, Kreps, Campbell, Stillman being dealt?

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

Not in the slightest, but Florida still has to ice a full team, and so does Rochester

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

apparently no one wanted them, for the same reason we don’t care too much for them.

unfortunately, the focus now shifts towards draft/free agency as theres only 20 games left to play and we need about 35 of those 40 points.sigh.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

exactly, it’s not that we are getting NHL quality play, but there is a rule about the number of players on the bench

by studyaid on Mar 3, 2010 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

i’m not disappointed in today, it usually is a dud and Sexton did a pretty good job since the Olympics….but that doesn’t mean we should have abandoned a GM search like we did and not finish it.

by alterego6487 on Mar 3, 2010 3:11 PM EST reply actions

I guess I’m the only one who wanted to see Kreps gone, regardless of the return. If we had gotten a bag of onions back for him we could have made bloomin’ onions.

I must have missed the Visnovsky for Ryan Whitney deal…

If I was Sexton, I would worry about my job. He did not move anyone big, Panthers can certainly entertain job offers for the GM position. I actually think that Florida would be a pretty good gig now. You have several second round draft picks, a high first round draft pick, and the Panthers are willing to part with anyone on the roster except exceptionally young players….Mark it on your calendar now, Sexton may be gone after the season is over. Hopefullly, we can finally get a real NHL GM with previous playoff experience. Add some better scouts and hire some new assistant coaches. This could be great for Florida if the new owners can pull it off.

Now would be the ideal time if it had to happen. I still want to see what he’s got at the draft and July 1st.

Seriously? It takes two to dance. In fact, I am perfectly fine with today. No one is going to take Kreps or Olesz or Allen unless we packaged some serious assets ala Michal Repik and the like along with them.

im hoping a couple more deals go down. for something valuable, of course.

by GoBrowns80 on Mar 3, 2010 4:04 PM EST reply actions

I’m calling the Roy acquisition nothing more than temporary filler for Rochester. What more can it be?

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 4:07 PM EST reply actions

i think you are correct

by GoBrowns80 on Mar 3, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

That would be my guess. Ellerby’s replacement since he’s going to spend the rest of the season here, as is Garrison.

Anyways, I happen to like Byron Bitz, he reminds me of a Ryan Malone type of player. Gritty, always in front of the net…

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 4:07 PM EST reply actions

I liked him as well. He’s cheap and has another year remaining.

Molson Anyone?!

Ok, so I just now get back and see that we’ve done virtually nothing except get a guy with two first names, and a guy with a really cool name!

So, other than shrug my shoulders and say that I’m not impressed, any suggestions on what I should say to Stu when he leans over the ledge to ask me “how’d we do” tonight?

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Tell him to get his tan going now, cause he’s gonna be indoors all Summer long trying to right this ship

by 34Beezer on Mar 3, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

Lots of work yet to do. Can’t solve it all in a day.

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

True, but then, ships have been known to sink in minutes…

by DarthDaddy98 on Mar 3, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

true, yet I just can’t get past the fact that they were so pissed off a few weeks ago, and vowed changes and here we with pretty much the same roster.

I guess I was looking at this as an opportunity to make a splash and run for the playoffs, yet we seemed to ahve taken a step backwards.

The offseason is going to be huge, and perssonally, I don’t think Randy can pull it off.

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

sorry my spelling has been awful, but our internet connection today is the pits!

by The Rat Trick on Mar 3, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

But they never said it would be rushed. Which is the right way to do it.

by Donny Rivette on Mar 3, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Business is Business though, Sexton states he wants to the right the ship but he did not retool in the offseason properly. Don’t be surprised if he is gone in two months. He had all summer, and he brought up Leopold (who he traded) and Sidenberg (traded), Moore (traded). He was unable to find the guy that replaces Peltonen and Zednik…… He should be gone when the season concludes. Yes, he did draft Kulikov but we dont know if that was JM"s plan all along….

by Hawkseye on Mar 3, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think everyone is forgetting that due to the ownership issues his hands were totally tied during the offseason. He was the interim GM and therefore powerless to do much beyond what was done.

Also, if the offers aren’t there not much can be done. I like that they have avoided the Luongo scenario so far. And may Mike Keenan still live in denial that he didn’t ruin the franchise.

by coasterg on Mar 3, 2010 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

I may be the only one, but that trade didn’t ruin the franchise. Remember Luongo was offered alot of money, and at many different times, but would not committ.
If Alex Auld didn’t get hurt and wasn’t rushed back by Jacques Martin, and Todd Bertuzzi didn’t have a back injury, this wouldn’t ahve been such a bad deal.

I commend Keenan for trying to get something rather than lose Luongo for virtually nothing like Jay.

Take a step back and see that we traded Olli for two defenseman, one of which is no longer here, and we traded Jay for what is ultimately now two draft picks.

As for me, the Luongo trade was made four years ago and we’ve had time to fix goaltending. As for scoring, an area that has needed helps since 2001, we have yet to address that.

Bailing for the moment, folks

Got to head out for a minute, then do a quick recap of the little that did occur, then head into game mode for tonight’s thriller against Philly.

Feel free to hang. Thanks everyone for being part of all this!
