The Sexton Administration: we hardly knew ye
As incoming general manager Dale Tallon is set to be officially introduced Tuesday, we thought it appropriate to look back on outgoing Randy Sexton's short time as the titular head of the Panthers' hockey operations.
Given the shaky ground on which Florida stood following Jacques Martin's rather hasty exit almost one year ago, Sexton inherited the "acting" GM label largely by default. Not an entirely negative situation; he had been Martin's assistant since January of 2007 and knew the organization inside and out. And to clarify, he officially held the title of Assistant General Manager until his promotion - and subsequent acceptance of a one-year deal - on October 2nd of 2009, which also happened to be first game of the new season. In Finland. A bit strange on the timing there, but this being the Alan Cohen-fed Panthers, no one glanced twice. Anyway, here's a peek at What Went Down during Sexy's tenure.

Yeah…wondered if I should have played it for laughs, but it really does that quite well on its own.

Thats a joke that doesn’t need a punch line. Koistenen, that is. He was my favorite whipping boy not too long ago.

Kinda guessed it wasn’t a mistake by Preds’ management when they allowed him to walk.

Yeah, definitely not. He’s pretty bad.

Does this mean the Panthers are rebuilding this season? It’s not like any of us remember what the playoffs are like.

it will be a process, but he has the blueprint. Like what you see with the Hawks? That;s what you could see with the Panthers. Couple of years, maybe we’ll have a real team. With four picks in the first two rounds, we have alot of options and he knows how to deal and draft

It's been a rebuilding season for about 10 years

You have to wonder
how secure is Peter DeBoer’s job now. The Panthers have new owners and a new GM and that usually doesn’t bode well for a Coach of a struggling team. If Florida starts the 2009-10 campaign poorly, and right now I don’t see anything to say they won’t, DeBoer is likely to be fired.
Two words: short leash. A GM without exception always wants to bring in his own guy, which makes perfect sense. The Panthers, however, have been a bit backward in this area: Alan Cohen hired Jacques Martin to coach, then Iron Mike to be GM soon after. Upon Keenan’s dismissal, JM foolishly took both positions (almost always a losing proposition). DeBoer was hired by JM only because JM was forced to take one job or the other. Not to demean Coach Pete, who was a major winner in the OHL, but his hiring was shall we say forced.
