Stevie Y to steer Lightning?

It's all over the web that longtime former Detroit Red Wings forward Steve Yzerman will be named the next general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. My submission to Bolts owner Jeff Vinik that Mike Keenan is rumored to be available apparently has gone unheeded.

Whomever is chosen, the Southeast Division will have seen fully three-fifths of its GMs replaced for 2010-11: Florida (Tallon replaces Sexton), Atlanta (Dudley/Waddell), and Tampa Bay (???/Lawton). Press conference is scheduled for 3pm, and check in with our pals at Raw Charge for updates.

Next question: who do the Bolts tab as head coach? There's that Keenan guy...

UPDATE: Done deal. And they do sound rather stoked over at Raw Charge. Of course that's only 'cuz they don't want their collective pang of disappointment to slip out regarding the loss of their first choice for the position. ;)

Uh, Donny....

NO. Not sure I can say it any plainer than that. NO THANKS, maybe? I don’t want Mike Keenan anywhere within spittin’ distance of my Bolts! ROFL :)

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

What has Steve Yzerman done to deserve a job in Tampa?

Pick team Canada? I willing to bet that Steve Yzerman the GM turns out to be as well as Wayne Gretzky the coach.

Don’t think you can compare those two. Gretzky had basically no background or training, internship or whatever you want to call it in either coaching or being a GM. Steve Yzerman, on the other hand has spent the last 5 years or so learning from one of the best in the business, Ken Holland, and with one of the best and most stable organizations around, the Detroit Red Wings. That Stevie Y felt comfortable enough to spread his “wings” (sorry for the pun there) means he’s ready to be the top dog and it wasn’t going to be in Detroit, much as Mike Ilitch wanted it to be. Detroit’s loss is Tampa Bay’s gain, I’d say.

Yeah but take away all the toys he had in Detoit

Where it was a destination city and where at a time, everything Detroit touched was gold. It’s going to be like when Dave Lewis went to coach for Boston and turned out to be a disaster. People are expecting him to walk in and fix it, and I think he’s going to damage his hockey reputation, just like when Gretzky jumped over to the bench.

by Alexander Calloway on May 25, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Does it change the process of learning if he doesn’t have all the “toys” from detroit?

Yzerman learned from the best in the game on an executive level.

And with luck, maybe Das Bolts will pick up Todd Bertuzzi!

That doesn't mean he will be Ken Holland

Steve Yzerman got this job because of his name, he has no experience running a team.

by Alexander Calloway on May 26, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Even Ken Holland had to start somewhere. Neither of us has a crystal ball. Who’s to say he won’t be the right choice? That remains to be seen. But to say he got the job only because of the name is an insult to the owner. He had good hockey people helping him in the search. This was not a blind squirrel happening upon an acorn. It was a methodical search for the best candidate they could find.

Stevie Y will be fine.

No Tampa Bay fans expect miracles. What we’ve wanted for the last few years is STABILITY. I know some fans will expect a miraculous turnaround anyway, but Stevie Y said in the press conference yesterday that there was “no magic wand to wave and make this team better”. He’s aware that it’s a long term thing. More importantly, so does the owner, Mr. Jeff Vinik. And he’s also aware of fewer “toys in the toybox”. But that is a slight to the likes of what we do have in Tampa Bay….Steven Stamkos, Marty St Louis, Vincent Lecavalier (and Stevie Y was his idol growing up, so if playing for your idol can’t get you fired up, then….), Ryan Malone, et.al.

I think Stevie will have plenty of “toys” to play with, just different ones than were in Detroit.

Tampa Bay had all three and won just 34 games

Tampa Bay has 12 players signed for 10/11 and $40 Mil cap hit. Outside of those three the top scorer for Tampa was Ryan Malone who only had 47 points. This team needs a lot of work, and right now I think the Lighting are just going to piss way the inexpensive years of Stamkos and Hedman’s careers. Glad to see the team hasn’t learning anything from the Barry Melrose incident.

by Alexander Calloway on May 26, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It has never been suggested that the team doesn’t need a lot of work. Steve Yzerman has repeatedly said as much in many of the interviews. I, for one, do not expect miracles. Stammer’s contract status will be dealt with in due time. Melrose was a sad mistake made by two very bad, very inexperienced owners who did NOT take the time to make a complete search. THEY hired Melrose because of his name. That didn’t work out at all.

New owner. And I can guarantee he’s well aware of the pitfalls and mistakes the previous regime made. Jeff Vinik is not a stupid man.

Um, no chance in hell Yzerman hires Keenan

Those two have a history — and it’s not a friendly one.

If scuttlebutt is to be believed, yes he was. Not sure to what degree, but still… the thought of Pierre McGuire being the Tampa GM gave me nightmares… yeesh…

Stats ain’t everything. I just do no believe he would be a good fit with the personnel the Lightning have. Apparently Mr. Vinik agreed (Thank heavens). I’d just as soon have McGuire stay a broadcaster where I can turn the sound off instead of listening to his drivel.

C’mon…he’d be fun. How else do you have a prayer of reacquiring Chris Gratton?

by Donny Rivette on May 25, 2010 2:15 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

So Gratton is assured to be a Panther huh because Tallon is an “Actual GM” right?

Perhaps Gratton could be in the running for head coach? Maybe we’ll free up Chad Kilger to be his assistant.

by Donny Rivette on May 27, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

You seem to be really pushing to find Gratts a job this season…. Why not have the Panthers give him a call? ;)

and as much as I liked Gratts, I’ll pass on that one too…. LOL
