Entry Draft Eve - Panthers Open Forum: No Sleep Tonight edition
With all of the info/rumors/headbanging flooding out of Los Angeles tonight I figured having a single place to hang out and talk it all up would be a wise choice. SBN has a healthy number of site editors on the ground at Draft Central (I didn't make it because, well, I have to work), not to mention the gaggle of Twitter and Facebook updates, so we should have plenty of Florida Panthers madness to discuss. Welcome, and BYOB.

Ok
So where are we? Gorten had has some great updates from LA. Panthers should be winding down their conversation with Gudbranson right about now.
It was a hard one to choose…….each one has its own meaning & each year will vary on which one is more important.
Yeah…Detroit fans don’t much care about the draft, me guesses.

I doubt we go after Kaberle unless Caber has told him all kind of good thing about South Florida and he is willing to go at a discount…..
Even less so if Gudbranson is our first choice…..he like Kuli may be NHL ready this year.
Willing to side with you on that; tough to tell what Tallon has in mind. I’m thinking Ellerby is bait no matter what the ultimate target may be. Ballard’s an option as well.

Kaberle
So far he’s linked (in various ways) with WAS, BOS, TB, VAN, STL and another club.

LeBrun is adding BUF and LA to those names

From Gorten via Twitter:
Erik Gudbranson thinks he could “complement” FLA’s Dmitry Kulikov and "potentially be his D-partner next year if everything goes well."
I heard
the #15 overall is getting a lot of offers. has anyone else heard the same?
Pretty obvious he wanted that pick as a bargaining chip.

From GR:
Tallon says don’t expect the Panthers to get one of the top two picks. Edmonton is not trading the No. 1 pick, especially to a Panthers team with little to offer. The Panthers could make a deal with the Oilers for the 15. The Penguins could also have a deal working for that selection.
I’m all sorts of kewl about Nash. Penner? If Tallon is convinced last season wasn’t a fluke – or a result of now ex-coach Pat Quinn’s magic – it’s not a terrible deal, IMO.

via RyanClassic on Twitter:
Fun fact: jersey numbers 4 (Taylor Hall) and 9 (Tyler Seguin) are retired by both Boston and Edmonton
Keep in mind...
…we’ve got a ton(ne?) of coverage from our own peeps:

hey guys! i’m back from Israel now and ready for the draft. i know i’m a little late, but im happy with the Horton trade….he didn’t want to be here so get lost. he confirmed all the doubts we always had about him. also shows us Dale ain’t afraid to pull the trigger..
i’m not expecting to pick at #15 tomorrow, but what will be the return??? GR mentioned Pens interested…
Welcome back, bro! Just sifting through the gloriousness that is Twitter

SHould be an interesting next 24 hours. All these big names on the trade block: Spezza, THomas, Savard, SOuray, Kesler.
One thing that I would like to point out is that Detroit and Washington have been very quiet. I wonder if they have something in the works.
Best draft for the Panthers would be (since #1 and #2 appear to be untradeable): Drafting Fowler/Gundrabunson #3 and moving #15 pick up for Neittermayer or Connolley. Panthers would fill two big voids in one draft that could be put into the line up almost immediately. I doubt it will happen though. But if Ballard and McCabe are on the block maybe it will happen. PEnguins could use another Dman if Gonchar wont resign.
Also, I have impressed with the Blackhawks. They have not dumped anyone off to another team that has contributed significantly for a whole season. Byfuglin is good but there are many other guys who will go to the net in Chicago. I don’t know what Dudley is thinking in Atlanta, don’t give away picks if you have not made the playoffs.
I would like to see the Panthers draft someone who is willing to sit in front of the net thewhole game. Maybe they would actually get a goal in sometime. :) They need some leaders and inspiring players, the team lacks player character.
I meant Kaberle not Kesler
But hey, that would be a great way to shake up the Canucks! trade Kesler. I Wonder how many players it will take to replace one Kesler? Three at least.
Or wait, the Captials seem to play better without Ovechkin on some nights. Trade Ovechkin for Kesler + First Round Pick. I wonder who would win a championship first, theCanucks or Caps? But I think that most would agree that the Caps and Canucks will win the stanley cup before THE FLYERS DO! What is it now 7 years bad luck for the Flyers and the cup.
Good stuff, Hawk.
Byfuglien only made a name for himself in the postseason, as his 17g-17a-34p attest. CHI is willing to gamble that is his peak.
Panthers absolutely lack “character” quotient. Hence Tallon’s appointment.
I’m warming up to Gudbranson (see the link to GR’s post above…great stuff). Smacks of an abundance of character.
The 15 would certainly help in moving up to top-ten spot, but what to give up, and what of the risk of trading with a division rival (TB, CAR, ATL are 6-7-8)? Always a dicey proposition.
If done, I’d love to see the Cats take a chance on Connolly.
From Steve X:
Erik Gudbranson was supposed to walk the red carpet with some of the other NHL draft prospects at the premiere of the new “Twilight” movie Thursday, but skipped it because the Panthers wanted to meet with him then.

Gonna go waaaaaaaaay out on a creaky limb here, but if the Cats keep the 3rd pick it’s gonna be Gudbranson. Seems rather obvious now.

I’m so onboard with Fowler, but more and more reports suggest Tallon wants to even out his D.

Would’ve been hilarious if he went to the premiere instead of meeting with the Cats.

That’s the clincher for me. These damned mock drafts will go on our tombstones.

As for Gudbranson\Fowler\#15… I’ve said before I’m leaning towards Gudbranson over Fowler. It’s pretty clear both should be NHL ready, but I think ’branson’s size and physicality is more of what we need than a puck mover. Besides scoring, one of our biggest weaknesses was a physical side to our game. Our D isn’t exactly intimidating, considering Allen plays like a 5"8 guy instead of the 6"4, 220+ he is. Ballard throws a nice hipcheck now and then, but he isn’t exactly Zdeno Chara back there. And our scoring issues aren’t going to be solved by a defenseman. Soooo.. go with Gudbranson.
I think it will be interesting to see what Tallon can get out of the 15th pick (plus a 2nd rounder or a body…) so many options. It’ll be an open market, and I’m thinking pick 15 + 33 could get a solid forward or something along those lines, or we could use it to trade up and get 2 picks in the top 10? Who knows… that’s why Tallon gets the big bucks. I know I certainly can’t wait to see what happens.
Hiya Karl! We’ll be doing a Live Forum from the Lauderdale Draft Party as well. I knew Microsoft was onto something when they developed the multiple windows feature :).

More Gudbranson goodness
Via Canwest’s Jim Matheson:
When the Florida Panthers, who have the third overall pick Friday, likely call his name, the six-foot-four, 195-pound defenceman from the Ontario Hockey League’s Kingston Frontenacs will pump his fist and hug his little brother Dennis — not necessarily in that order.
It’ll be the second happiest day of Erik’s life, after he hopefully gets the news that 12-year-old Dennis is cancer free. Erik plans on having a party shortly after his brother sees the oncologist on Aug. 18.
I wish I could find the article I read recently about Gudbranson and his “potential” instead of being able to just step right in. It sounds as if Fowler would be the better pick.
People in Rochester are all hoping to see Ellerby traded, you know we’re a ruthless city!
You’ve earned the title, no doubt!
Full disclosure: as most of you are aware, I was the engineer on the Fowler Express; got to admit, it’s tough to not fall into the Tallon Trap and agree with his reasoning. Call it blind faith, but the dood has been around.

As I finally read about the two players, its a tough call. Fowler knows what to do with the puck, Gubranson knows how to hit people and take them off the puck. Either way it sounds like the Cats for the 2nd year in a row could get a defenseman that can step right into the NHL.

Precisely. I’m still waiting for someone – anyone – to say Gudbranson is five years ahead of Pronger at this age. That won’t happen, as Dmen typically take longer to blossom, but I’m liking what’s being said so far.
Pronger needed a serious mental adjustment in the form of Keenan and MacInnis to round into form. Then his nastiness took over. But it was a long time coming.

Rewind
From Eklund, 10-13-09:
Would somebody tell me why any NHL team would ever go open the season in Europe? The Panthers rumors are already starting with the key name being Horton. The Oilers love Horton and I have also heard that the Canadiens are in on the Horton talks as well should he be available.
After that he claimed Olli Jokinen would FINALLY be dealt – within hours – to PHX.
Gudbranson is likely going to be the pick and from everything I have read he is ’likely ready" to step right in to the NHL lineup, something neither Fowler nor Conally might be able to do. So that works for me! Waiting until the #15 pick will be interesting. I doubt we trade it to move up in the draft, but I would not be suprised to see it dealt for a current NHL forward. Maybe not a “star” but a good top 6 fwd.
Oh and LBC, I will be rockin the blue jersey tomorrow night. Going to get there around 5:30-6. Likely with my daughter. so that we can have some dinner and get us a good seat.
Perfect, Carl. Be there around the same time. Trying to pick out the “luckiest” Whalers sweater in the collection to wear. With the Whale “lucky” is a relative term…
