As if you didn't know: Panthers / NHL Entry Draft is upon us

We're transitioning into Draft Day with minimal fanfare, hoping of course that whatever picks/moves/deals the Panthers make in a few short hours will fly under the proverbial radar and blossom down the road into - positive - draft history. Nothing's a guarantee, but at least two of the gentlemen selected today will be longtimers for the Cats well into the century's second decade.

Our schedule: we'll be scouring the interwebs for all (well, the free) draft info from Twitter, Facebook, SBN insiders, and Twitter. Why Twitter twice? As Dom Deluise's seminal Don Don might say: "Well, I like it."

Will the Cats trade up? Trade down? Fowler or Gudbranson? Will Connolly shock us all? What of that 15th overall pick?

Feel free to post whatcha got right here as the morning unfolds; we'll have another "official" open forum going up later on, to be followed by our Entry Draft Open Thread of Doom to cover the evening's festivities. It's your day, kids: talk up whatever you like.

And a reminder: We'll be heading to the Fort Lauderdale end of the Panthers' official Draft Party, at Duffy's Sports Grill on Cordova, for the actual event. Join us.

Hate leading this thread with Eklund, but you’ve got to hand it to a guy who somehow manages to fluff 17 “rumors” into 20:

ANY OTHER YEAR I would have been with you. That’s a great loction by the way. Big place.

I just read on TSN that Panthers are heavily shopping the #15 pick. Ballard too! I would keep Ballard over Allen and McCabe.

by Hawkseye on Jun 25, 2010 8:44 AM EDT reply actions

Imagine I would as well, but I am rather partial to Caber.

Ballard’s likely easier to trade than Allen. Also, he may have asked to go.

It's Poker time

Just think of the possibilities. Let’s say the Panthers want to play the game with the teams drafting right below them…It’s rumored that Columbus badly wants the puck moving defenseman Cam Fowler…..Do the Panthers swap picks with Columbus and get say a 3rd or 4th round pick from Columbus and the Panthers till get Gundbrandson, or maybe someone like the Islanders would offer even more for us to move down three slots and we then take the winger Connelly at 6. Maybe Tallon wants to keep pick 15 and just kicking the tires and seeing what offers he may get..perhaps he is just spreading the word about trading pick #15…Maybe none of this is true and then again…..Kind of fun to imagine the calls he is getting. Today is “Fly on the Wall” if your a Panther fan

by Fan4pan on Jun 25, 2010 8:53 AM EDT reply actions

If FLA knows what teh BJs desire than it’s Tallon’s mission to make a “We promise not to select…” deal. It’s a brutal business.

From Garrioch:
The Florida Panthers have talked to the Blackhawks about winger Kris Versteeg. They could have the inside track as their GM is Dale Tallon, the former Blackhawks GM…The Canucks reportedly have offered a player and the 25th overall pick for Versteeg

he definitely fits the mold and is a promising young player. If we could snatch him up for the 15th pick I would be happy

I’d like to see us move Vokoun to Dallas for Ribiero and some picks.

by helmut on Jun 25, 2010 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry for the delay

I’ve been busy battling a rather nasty virus/trojan horse/spyware issue. Looks to be good now. Sure picked the right day.

by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Well there he is..

But Jeff Carter is a character player and would fill in better than Ribiero……If we could get a decent pick with Carter for TVO……But I still think our best chance to make the playoffs this coming year is with TVO in net……..sooooooooooooooooooooomany choices.

by LAUSMAN on Jun 25, 2010 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

Carter is a building block; Ribeiro is a “piece” (see Stumpel, Zednik, Stillman, etc)

by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I just don’t see them giving up Carter for Vokoun when they can take Thomas from Boston, who is somewhat desperate to shed his cap hit. And Boston doesn’t exactly need help up the middle either…

by helmut on Jun 25, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Thomas had one solid season, he’s older than Vokoun (by three years – 36!), and if he sputters they’re shafted with an untradeable contract.

They’d have options with T-Vo, not to mention he’s simply a far better tender.

“…he’s older than Vokoun (by three years – 36!), and if he sputters they’re shafted with an untradeable contract.”

Hmm… just like Chris Pronger? They’ve done it before, and they’ll do it again.

Fowler, via NatPost:

"All of us (top-ranked defensemen) bring a different aspect to the game," he said of the three defenders. "I think it’s going to depend on what a team is looking for, what type of style, but like I’ve been saying, the team that takes you, it’s because it’s the right situation for you."

no way we take another d man at 15

by peterbiz09 on Jun 25, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Not. A. Chance.

Insanity. But they were grading on attributes, not team needs.

I was hoping to pick up Dylan McllRath at 15 ….but we’d have to trade a D-man…

One has to wonder

if Randy Sexton has any interest in the Asst GM job…

by DarthDaddy98 on Jun 25, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Saw somewhere (The Herald?) that Sexton will not be offered that position. Food for thought.

by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He must not have impressed the new boss man…

by DarthDaddy98 on Jun 25, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Rather hard to believe…Sexton’s a good numbers guy, cap-wise.

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

ballard is almost certainly on the move it seems… which is sad to here because the return will probably be minimal
