Florida Panthers / 2010 NHL Entry Draft - first round Open Thread of Doom
Cam or Erik? Or perhaps Brett? How about that 15th pick half the league is interested in? Most importantly, what's the story on that dog? We'll have all the answers as Dale's Big Night plows forward.
A reminder: Draft Parties will be held at Duffy's Sports Grills in North Palm and Lauderdale, so if you're available, do try to join in the festivities. We'll be at the southern spot, but the open thread will carry our torch as all the picks are made, trades are established, yada yada.
Heard a rumor? Got a hunch? Feel free to comment on anything you like; should be a rather furious few hours. Thanks for hanging with us.
Television coverage begins at 7pm - US: Versus Canada: TSN

1st Round
I would love to see the Cats draft Gudbranson with the #3 and then draft Jeff Skinner at 15.
Skinners gained a lot of fans recently

Any guy whose question is his skating scares me.
I waited all year for this?

Tallon has got to like.....
Gudbranson and Connoly…..I’m not sure Fowler fits that well here. another thought………Connoly #3 Mc Ilrath#15….
Found a hole for us in the back. Definitely headed to the bar after eats. Lotsa tvs.

#3 pick
I honestly can’t see Tallon picking Connolly, he has been falling all year long. Gudbranson is much better value for the pick. And at 15, Skinner looks out of this world, he scored more goals than Hall or Seguin this regular season. If you want goal why not choose they guy who scored 70!!!! this season.
GR saying if Ballard goes to Van, 25th overall comes to FLA
by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 6:03 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
And the 25 isn’t exactly bad value, and didn’t you get Bernier as well?

Looking more and more like Ballard’s gonna be a Canuck, Panthers with 3 picks in 1st round??
Real_ESPNLeBrun = St Louis source says they’re no longer in on Ballard

Don’t know who this guy is, but… he makes an interesting point, lol.
@DamoSpin = There’s no way Ballard is worth five more years at $4.2 million. Good open ice hitter, that’s about it. So many dumb contracts in FLA
Just waiting to hear the official announcement of Ballard to VAN now… oh yea, and the draft itself.
Done. Bernier and 25th for ballard. That’s 3 in the top 25 kids.

I don’t get it. So if Player X is still available at #25, Vancouver gets to say “Nope, we don’t Ballard and Oreskovich, we want Player X. I know you were planning on using #25 on someone, but too bad.” ? Weird…
I would expect it to go the other way. If player X (whomever the Panthers want) is still available, then the Canucks get Oreskovich in the deal too.

not weird, just means we’re holding off until then to see if we still want to go through with it.

Wow, cool. I’m still expecting another trade before the 15th pick, but it’s definitely getting interesting.

Nice Trade
Especially since you got Grabner. That kid is pretty good.

Yeah, VAN was hosed if they gave up Grabner. Even otherwise.

I think they were all re-signed. There are a few guys out there, but really it’s a good year to pick players up through trades.

So ...
… one assumes that Florida takes the player Vancouver wants with their 15th pick so the deal goes thru.
here's what's happening.
-if the player Vancouver wants is gone, we’ll trade this year’s 25th pick
-if the player we want is still there, we use our 1st round pick and you get our 1st rounder for 2011

Some palpable confusion in the room about that trade.
by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 7:50 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Tallon’s made more progress in a few weeks than the 3 previous GMs combined. Sure there were some nice solo pickups, but he’s doing a wholesale change.
That’s because Tallon’s got more balls than the last three GMs combined. He’s not afraid to take a risk. Our GMs, like the team, have been playing not to lose.

They need to hurry this up. The first set should be starting in about 20. If they haven’t gotten to 15 yet, I’ll have to catch up at set break.

Hmmm… Connolly to the Lightning. Don’t they really need some defense? Maybe they’re hoping to win a lot of 6-5 games. Old time hockey.

Well, with three picks in the first round, you can afford to pick one who’s on his way to college.

The only reason I didn’t pick him in the mock draft was that he was high school on his way to college. I was running on a no-trade, Panthers have two picks scenario. Pretty cool pick, actually.

"He’s further along and more polished than (Boston’s Blake) Wheeler. He’s also a better skater than David Backes was at the same age (17). The only difference is Backes was thicker, but the ingredients are there. He wants the puck and wants to make plays. He’s a blue-collar type kid who works his tail off."
Gudbranson saying all the right things to Richards (George, not Mike). Can see why he was Tallon’s choice over Fowler

No question. Quick, offensive minded, moves the puck well. Struggled a little last year in the defensive end, but he’s a solid 2nd pair defenseman.

Don’t get me wrong. Howden is a great pick at 25. Hell, so far everything Tallon has done has been great at first glance. Just wondering how this draft has been turned on its head.
Tallon is the man
a GREAT GREAT GREAT day
The best defenseman to pair with Dmitri
A talented young Center who is very skilled with bags of determination
One of the best skaters in the draft, a complete package simply requiring confidence in himself
All over 6ft3
and then we get a genuine young sniper from the Canucks who the fans are pretty disappointed to lose and who is just scratching the surface of his potential.
I don’t think Tallon could have dreamed it better.
Thanks for checking in with us, folks
We’ll be back up and running in the morning for Round Two. Summaries of the picks and Ballard deal to come as well.
Just got home from the Lauderdale gig. A great time, even greater company.
