Florida Panthers / 2010 NHL Entry Draft - first round Open Thread of Doom

Draft_logo_medium

Cam or Erik? Or perhaps Brett? How about that 15th pick half the league is interested in? Most importantly, what's the story on that dog? We'll have all the answers as Dale's Big Night plows forward.

A reminder: Draft Parties will be held at Duffy's Sports Grills in North Palm and Lauderdale, so if you're available, do try to join in the festivities. We'll be at the southern spot, but the open thread will carry our torch as all the picks are made, trades are established, yada yada.

Heard a rumor? Got a hunch? Feel free to comment on anything you like; should be a rather furious few hours. Thanks for hanging with us.

Television coverage begins at 7pm - US: Versus  Canada: TSN

1st Round

I would love to see the Cats draft Gudbranson with the #3 and then draft Jeff Skinner at 15.

Any guy whose question is his skating scares me.

I waited all year for this?

by Fehr and Balanced on Jun 25, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets go Connoly or Gudbranson wtih #3 and trade #15 for Jeff Carter

by JMarushin on Jun 25, 2010 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Tallon has got to like.....

Gudbranson and Connoly…..I’m not sure Fowler fits that well here. another thought………Connoly #3 Mc Ilrath#15….

by LAUSMAN on Jun 25, 2010 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

I think Connoly would be good, lose horton, restock with Connolly, pick up a defensive d-man in the FA market. I agree, Fowler probably would fit the least. We have Wideman and Kulikov, we don’t need another puck mover when we have another gaps to be filled

by JMarushin on Jun 25, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Vokoun to Philly for their 1st and third pick and Hartnell/or Carter.

by Hawkseye on Jun 25, 2010 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

Vokoun to Colmbus or Islanders for their 1st pick and Florida high second round pick.
I wish!

by Hawkseye on Jun 25, 2010 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

I think the caps are heavily involved in the Kaberle Sweepstakes.

by Hawkseye on Jun 25, 2010 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Found a hole for us in the back. Definitely headed to the bar after eats. Lotsa tvs.

by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 5:54 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

#3 pick

I honestly can’t see Tallon picking Connolly, he has been falling all year long. Gudbranson is much better value for the pick. And at 15, Skinner looks out of this world, he scored more goals than Hall or Seguin this regular season. If you want goal why not choose they guy who scored 70!!!! this season.

by Joel Masson on Jun 25, 2010 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

GR saying if Ballard goes to Van, 25th overall comes to FLA

by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 6:03 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Saw that too. You have to think Ballard is worth more than the 25th…

by Karl Selvig on Jun 25, 2010 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

And the 25 isn’t exactly bad value, and didn’t you get Bernier as well?

I waited all year for this?

by Fehr and Balanced on Jun 25, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

And what’s this about EDM going after BOS pick?

by Donny Rivette on Jun 25, 2010 6:05 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Looking more and more like Ballard’s gonna be a Canuck, Panthers with 3 picks in 1st round??

Don’t know who this guy is, but… he makes an interesting point, lol.

@DamoSpin = There’s no way Ballard is worth five more years at $4.2 million. Good open ice hitter, that’s about it. So many dumb contracts in FLA

Just waiting to hear the official announcement of Ballard to VAN now… oh yea, and the draft itself.

by Karl Selvig on Jun 25, 2010 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

Done. Bernier and 25th for ballard. That’s 3 in the top 25 kids.

by Karl Selvig on Jun 25, 2010 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

how about trading all three first round picks to Edmonton for Number one overall?

yeah, I guess if a certain player is available at 25

by studyaid on Jun 25, 2010 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get it. So if Player X is still available at #25, Vancouver gets to say “Nope, we don’t Ballard and Oreskovich, we want Player X. I know you were planning on using #25 on someone, but too bad.” ? Weird…

by Karl Selvig on Jun 25, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I would expect it to go the other way. If player X (whomever the Panthers want) is still available, then the Canucks get Oreskovich in the deal too.

Tallon’s made more progress in a few weeks than the 3 previous GMs combined. Sure there were some nice solo pickups, but he’s doing a wholesale change.

by coasterg on Jun 25, 2010 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

That’s because Tallon’s got more balls than the last three GMs combined. He’s not afraid to take a risk. Our GMs, like the team, have been playing not to lose.

…and throws pucks in his own net.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I can see why he was next on the list out of town. MR. Inconsistent Horton and TEmperTantrum Ballard are gone.

I thought Etem would be a good pick at 19… he HAS TO be a great pick at 25… right?

by Karl Selvig on Jun 25, 2010 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

What the hell is wrong with Etem? Did he screw someone’s sister? He’s ranked top 10 in almost every scouts page.

Don’t get me wrong. Howden is a great pick at 25. Hell, so far everything Tallon has done has been great at first glance. Just wondering how this draft has been turned on its head.

by Karl Selvig on Jun 25, 2010 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

Would he be AHL ready?

basically Tallon has gone with high character, low risk guys.

All have the size, determination and work ethic. I mean for Howden his principle flaw has been described as not having enough faith in his own high ability. Some flaw.

Tallon is the man

a GREAT GREAT GREAT day

The best defenseman to pair with Dmitri

A talented young Center who is very skilled with bags of determination

One of the best skaters in the draft, a complete package simply requiring confidence in himself

All over 6ft3

and then we get a genuine young sniper from the Canucks who the fans are pretty disappointed to lose and who is just scratching the surface of his potential.

I don’t think Tallon could have dreamed it better.

Thanks for checking in with us, folks

We’ll be back up and running in the morning for Round Two. Summaries of the picks and Ballard deal to come as well.

Just got home from the Lauderdale gig. A great time, even greater company.
