Florida Panthers / 2010 NHL Entry Draft - Open Thread of Doom, day two

Draft_logo_medium

Not to worry kids: the next six rounds will fly past at breakneck speed. As of 11:30 am EST, Dale Tallon's Panthers have 4 picks in the second round, 2 in the fourth, and 1 each in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames. In essence: 33, 36, 50, 59, 92, 93, 123, 153, and 183. That's an amazing collection - historically speaking - coming from this club.

Today's psychosis from Staples Center gets underway at 1 pm EST, and can be followed on NHL Network. We'll keep an eye out for a live stream as well (are you listening, NHL.com?). The Cats have been the early headliners so far; what's next?

From the NHL draft blog:

From the prospects
06.25.2010 /10:15 PM PT

Erik Gudbranson, when asked if he and Panthers GM Dale Tallon talked at all on the podium after he was picked: “He says, ‘I thought tough guys don’t wear pink shirts’ (the 6-4 Gudbranson had a black suit with a pink shirt), and I said ‘Tough guys wear pink shirts for a reason.’”

And not a Bouwmeester veteran; a vet with personality.

Mr. Comatose.
I thoroughly enjoyed when they stated that Dudley swapped #1 for #3 and J-Blow has yet to forgive him.

So is Bryan McCabe next to be traded?

Having the same issue – the link on the NHL page just goes to a summary.

Thanks Niesy! Didn’t even think to go to the team’s site. Duh.

I had a hard time finding it too. I think they didn’t make it very clear ahead of time. :)

John McFarland picked 33rd.

Good pick with McFarland.

“Phone is vibrating like crazy. Either Justin Bieber has died, or the second round has started.”

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

Strange one. But at least its cool that they are going to call the player prior to announcing.

by coasterg on Jun 26, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Wonder if Tallon drafts Andrew Yogan at one point in the draft

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

59 seems to be the spot for him

by milhouse on Jun 26, 2010 1:33 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That’s my assumption as well. No thirds, so it’s now or take a chance in the fourth.

Connor Brickley selected at 50

May may another run at an All Star game in the next four years or so

Hope so, the previous one was a lot of fun.

CAR has it next year, beyond that I believe it’s open

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ve been picking up a lot of players who dropped significantly. Good risks though, dropping players can turn it around.

by coasterg on Jun 26, 2010 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully. Love to see him end up with us.

by coasterg on Jun 26, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Same that I was thinking. Tallon is a genius. Doesnt want to “waste” the pick yet on Yogan so he decides to trade down and gets two picks in return. 69 could be Yogan.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Here’s comes the trade…

59 to Minn for 69 and 99.

Man Florida is doing awesome!

In Talon we trust!

Brittain taken at 92, Goalie.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

Joy, Jogan selected at No. 100. Panthers did select Donskoi.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

Gotta have faith in Tallon’s decision, but I’m mightily disappointed

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Sure, In Tallon we trust.

But what a story it would be. Local kid playing for the Panthers.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Got that right. Has to be a crazy big reason not to take him, and remain content that he wasn’t going to last until 123.

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s always trades. He could end up here eventually…

by JDMorris on Jun 26, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Praying he’s dispatched Sexy over to the Rags desk with a mission

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Fowler is a crybaby like Crosby.

Good that we took Gudbranson. Like his personality more than Fowler. Also Fowler could point to be like Bouwmeester (not playingwise)

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t we have a pick at 123 or did I screw that up?

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

They show something about Yogan right now on NHL network.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

I hate Krupp. HE not only scored the last goal for the Avs in the series to win the Cup for the Avalance. But he is not the coach of the National team from Germany. Ugh.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

From Steve Simmons via Twitter:

Maybe because I saw him play a lot with Jr. Canadiens, I have to believe DTallon stole John McFarland in 2nd rd. This guy is a playa

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Awesome. Really hope that McFarland can bring us some scoring back along with Free Agency this year. Though, is he already NHL ready in October?

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

This remembers me at the Heatley trade last season when waived his NTC for Edmonton.

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Must have mixed something up then..

btw. 153 pick is LW Corey Durocher

by Boothy16 on Jun 26, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Gonna stick my head into icewater for a minute and ponder what to do with all of this.

by Donny Rivette on Jun 26, 2010 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

A very disappointing Day 2

After the second pick, we seem to have not bothered, going off the reservation for virtually every pick when there were far better rated prospects in each round.

What is shocking is our complete ignorance for even looking at European players. Maybe thats why the Red Wings and others win cups and we don’t.

Its all very good drafting size, but skill also helps.

At 50 we could have drafted Jarnkrok but went Brinkley. At 59 we drafted down for two nobodies when we could have taken who the Wild did Larsson who was exceptional in the WorldJ20

We missed Yogan despite 3 opportunites.

Some of these guys will need to seriously progress to get a pro contract and play with the Everblades.

by MagicDave on Jun 26, 2010 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

How can you say that it was a disappointing day. Just cause a player is from europe dosen’t make them any better and a player from north america. Look at the Blackhawks 7 of their 22 players are european, including the goalies.

After the first round drafting is all about getting the best player available. I am gonna just trust in Tallon, hes a great hockey mind and knows what he is going.

by Joel Masson on Jun 26, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

To take Brinkley over Jarnkrok is definitely NOT taking best player available based on any measurement that anyone wants to use.

This is why the RedWings win cups and we don’t make the playoffs.

by MagicDave on Jun 26, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The wings win cups because of more factors than drafting talented players. Jarnkrok might be more talanted at this point but nobody know what any of these kids will be like in 2-5 years.

Lets just hope for our team’s sake that we did choose the right player.

by Joel Masson on Jun 26, 2010 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

The Has Been Team............

The Wings……not the PANTHERS….I really wanted Yogan….but I trust the GM for the 1st. time in 10 years and I’m sure most of you feel the same way…..We are Definitely going to look different……..He ain’t done yet. We will NOT BE A FUN TEAM TO PLAY…..and it’s about time!
