"The Panthers hold the third overall pick and, while they were reportedly rebuffed in an attempt to acquire the second overall pick from the Bruins, NESN.com was told on Sunday that there have been talks about the Bruins still trading for the third pick so that they can get one of the aforementioned defensemen.
However, keep in mind that Dale Tallon was one of the main architects of the current Stanley Cup finalists, the Chicago Blackhawks, and he built through the draft, holding on to top picks like 2007 second overall pick, Patrick Kane."

The only thing that might even get Boston’s attention, let alone any actual interest, would be 3rd overall, 3rd round, and a quality player (go ahead and throw Horton’s name here) for the 2nd overall.
If it’s up to me, it’s not worth it. Take the sure-fire monster defeseman at #3, re-stock forward talent in the 2nd\3rd round (I think we have 4 picks combined for those 2 rounds?) and go from there. Matthias and Repik should be ready to step up to full-time NHL duty, maybe pick up a free agent or use those 2nd\3rd round picks or Vokoun to get a quality scorer, 2nd line guy, and we should be able to skate a decent line up. I don’t think the sacrifice is worth it just to move up 1 spot and get the Hall\Seguin leftover. Gudbranson or Fowler will be a lock top 4 d-man, paired with Kulikov or Ballard… good things.
Going to get really wild here:
Completely outside of of a pick-swap…
Horton for Bergeron.
Bergeron ($4.75M) will be a UFA in a year, and BOS will be unwilling to accomodate a hefty raise. Both forwards have NTCs going into effect on July 1st. Horts has slightly better numbers, and has been healthier, and is locked into a cap-freindly ($4M) contract for the next three seasons, but words like “character” and leadership" have abounded throughout Bergeron’s career.
The trick is in re-signing him within the next 12 months. Everything’s a gamble; just seems on the surface to be a Tallon-happy type of movement.
Not Worth It
As painful as it is to see one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL pick a D-man in the third spot, it makes the most sense. I agree with taking Fowler or Gudbranson 3rd, moving Vokound for a top centerman, and either restocking the system with quality talent in the 2nd/3rd rounds, or package some of those 2nd round picks with Horton or someone with some trade value and get back another quality player. You can be sure Tallon is going to make his mark on this team early by acquiring a top centerman somehow.
I think the difference between Seguin/Hall and the next 3-4 guys is substantial enough that the Panthers would have to make a pretty significant trade offer. What I would like to see is somehow trading roster players for the #2 pick so we keep the #3 pick as well.
If we were going to trade Horton and Weiss this summer, this would be the best return we could get, being Seguin or Hall.
I think Boston already got its ridiculously favored package when they traded Kessel for the 2nd pick in the draft!
Trading anything more than Horton and #3 to Boston for just the #2 pick is absurd.
I would be good with Horton + some 2nds and either a prospect/ future first round pick/ Olesz
Or even swapping Horts, #3, and a 2nd rounder for #2 and Bergeron. (we may have to give up a bit more in this and I still may be cool with that. it would still be 2 top forwards in return.)
Olesz’s contract : untadeable. It’s Redden without the Sather glam factor.

I think there are very few packages that are too much that the Panthers could offer. I would offer Horton and Weiss for the #2 pick and salary like Ryder. Why not? Seguin/Hall have a better chance of being legitimate first line/star players and the Panthers don’t make the playoffs with what they have right now.
If this trade occurred, the Panthers could really start building something with Hall/Seguin and then one of the D-men with the third pick (Fowler/Gundbardson/Gromley).
Maybe it is too much but only an offer like this will give us a chance for a true franchise forward.
I’m still thinking buyout unless we can trade him for someone else’s salary problem.

From "Malkin to the Kings":
(Tallon’s) looking for help just about everywhere, but isn’t offering up much. While expensive forwards Nathan Horton ($4-million, all terms US, cap hit through 2013) and Rostislav Olesz ($3.125 million through 2014) are available, it’s C Stephen Weiss and D Keith Ballard who are drawing the most interest. It’s doubtful either of those players will be dealt.

There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.
Got to be a way to integrate it. Sales would be through the roof.

I don’t think Boston’s trading that pick. Given that, I say we draft one of the d-men and try to trade Vokoun for a center (Hey Philly, sure you don’t want Vokoun?). We only have four solid D AFAIC: Kulikov, McCabe, Ballard and Garrison. Allen’s best days are behind him. I think the knee injury is just too much. Koistenen was a disaster and it doesn’t look like Ellerby’s ready yet. We’re solid in prospects for goal, but with Leopold and Seidenberg gone, the team has big holes on defense again.

Nice call on the “core of four”. Caber’s not going to be around forever; with luck and some shrewd drafting (Fowler? Gudbranson?) he’ll be replaced – more or less – in a year’s time. Of course, we all want to see Ellerby make The Step, but too many talented defensive prospects isn’t a bad thing.
