Around SBN: 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations Final

From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Harvey Fialkov:

The Panthers are severing ties with their ECHL affilitate, the Florida Everblades and will add a new affiliate by the "end of next week,'' according to (assistant general manager Mike) Santos.

Santos also said he expects to name a coach at AHL Rochester this weekend.

That came out of nowhere, though it probably should not have. Getting fed up sharing a minor league club - and fighting for prospect ice time - with an Everblades organization owned by the division-rival Hurricanes. Still, the geography of the partnership was second to none...

UPDATE: 'Blades beat writer Woody Womack has been on this for the better part of a month, stating:

The Everblades have been mentioned in rumors suggesting the team could be in talks with to add either New York Rangers or the Anaheim Ducks as a second NHL affiliate.

Interesting move. I still can’t quite get my head around the ECHL. The Wild had an affiliate in the Johnstown Chiefs, but never sent a single prospect there. In fact, many times when the AHL affiliate Houston Aeros had to off load players or have a rehab stint, they went to the Everblades. It made no sense to me.

Reasonable stuff there, BR. Could say similar things about Panthers prospects with the ’Blades.
Guess it comes down to having a “pro” yet more than junior place to stock the in-betweens.

Loaning them out is always an option but I think Tallon would prefer keeping FLA prospects together as much as possible. In a perfect world anyway.

Then again, he may simply not want playing time decided by a rival. Which of course is only good business.

I’m not sure about the situation with the Wild, but the ECHL is the only league besides the AHL in the CBA, so players (generally) have to be assigned to one or the other league. Obviously, there have been some cases of international loans recently, but for NA leagues it has to be those two. So, generally, you’ll see the ECHL team as the team where all the AHL’s call-ups played. That’s generally how it functioned with the Jackets when I was in Syracuse. Call-ups to Columbus would be replaced with call-ups from Dayton.

That’s completely incorrect Johnny. Detroit has sent players to the IHL in the past couple years. Dallas and some of the other teams have sent players to the CHL. The CHL exists, because the ECHL has veteran limits the IHL didn’t and CHL doesn’t have.

Not completely incorrect, but the source I used was not quite accurate either. I should know by now to take the extra ten minutes and pull up the CBA itself.

To restate, correctly, the ECHL is the only league that players on an entry level SPC can be sent to without their consent (see CBA Section 9.7). The AHL is the only league that NHL players not on an entry level SPC can be sent to without the player’s consent (see CBA Sections 13.10-11).

So, technically, the only part of my post that was incorrect was: “but for NA leagues it has to be those two.” However, if I’d looked up the specific language in the first place, I would have phrased the rest of the comment differently.

it's official

Per Womack – Naples News. Can’t post the link from me phone.

Oooooooooooooooops...Hold On

Strike that…not official. Was no link; saw a tweet by Womack and now can’t locate it.

Everblades still have Panthers representation on home page, and nothing more referencing the “divorce” anywhere else. Yet.

My bad…should have followed up more closely.
