Panthers: Time for moore Dominic in Sunrise?

Dominic Moore

#42 / Center / Montreal Canadiens

6-0

196

Aug 03, 1980

Cute ridiculously obvious title, eh?

Perusing a list of remaining NHL free agents this morning and came across a familiar name, former Panthers center Dominic Moore. In his short time with Florida, he impressed many not only with his faceoff prowess and commendable forechecking abilities, but also an unwavering sense of heart and gusto which has been little-seen 'round these parts in recent years.

Upon being dealt to Montreal at the '10 Trade Deadline (for a 2011 second-round pick), he quickly earned fan-favorite status with a larger audience among not only Canadiens faithful but followers of the playoffs in general. His never-say-die approach to the game was memorable in the least and simply fun to watch.

Not precisely sure of course what the Tallon crew has in mind for future acquisitions (I'm solidly of the belief that a first-line center should be targeted via trade), but if the current slate of centermen is kept intact - being Stephen Weiss, Steven Reinprecht, and Shawn Matthias - is Moore a good fit with the "new" Panthers?

At 6'0", 196 lbs he doesn't nearly bring the size Tallon's been publicly claiming to be in pursuit of (nor along the lines of the monsters drafted in June), but the "character" quotient is definitely in evidence, and he's one of those rarities that plays larger than his size. He's certainly proven himself a steady, reliable third-liner, but what would his addition do to the development of Matthias?

And should Reinprecht be shopped? Behold the many hypotheticals...

I think we all agree that it would be best to acquire a first line centre and not a third third line centre.
Assuming we dont get a first line centre though, I wouldnt mind having Moore back, great work ethic and he actually has a decent amount of skill. Just don’t expect his efforts to take us far out of the basement.

Oh, by no means are we placing a “savior” ribbon on his chest.

Dislike. We don’t need to be getting older, especially if it’s just a 3rd line role guy. Sure, he can provide some hard work, win some faceoffs… but that’s what we got from him last season and we ended up with the 3rd pick. If we’re going after additional pieces, they need to have long-term goals with the team. I just don’t see Moore fitting in with the blueprint Tallon and Co. seem to be working with.

if we have room on the team, which we do have for another center, why not sign him. In the long run we trade him for another 2nd round pick.

As I said in another thread...

More goalie checks!!

In all seriousness, Moore is cheap, works hard and was good in the playoffs. That said, they need to figure out what’s up with Reinprecht and Stillman before making this kind of depth signing (as opposed to the depth signing yesterday with the two minor league/call up guys). But I would be happy to see him back.

A-1, Johnny. Exactly why I brought up Rhino’s name at the end. With the right linemates maybe he’s got something we haven’t seen yet, but do we wait for it? He’s not particularly fast, nor does he carry the size (6-0, 200).

Considering the alternatives...

Which happen to be(including Moore, of course) the likes of:
Krys Kolanos
Brendan Morrison
John Madden
Eric Belanger
Dave Scatchard
Mike Comrie
Jeff Halpern
Ryan Johnson
Kyle Wellwood
Glen Metroplit
Craig Conroy
Jim Slater
Jamie Lundmark

….Blowing anyone’s skirt up yet?

I think Moore would offer the best return for your investment at the moment. Even if you have to ship him off at the deadline(again). Either way, as an active member of your club, or as possible trade bait, he would be an asset, IMO, and you can’t really say that about a lot of the other alternatives on the list above.

Scatchard is a decent player, and definitely would give you size and experience, but I’m not to sure what he gives you beyond just being “a guy”. Moore will…at the VERY least…give you a bit of a more(no pun intended) offensive dynamic than Scatchard ever would, and Moore’s “resale” value would be higher given his showing in the recent playoffs with The Habs, IMO.

I can remember a time when a guy like Scatchard(and Mike Sillinger) would come up every year as a guy GM’s would look to trade for at the deadline, but I believe that his ship has sailed . As far as being anything more than a 3rd or 4th line guy who can be a bit of a physical force, there just isn’t a whole lot there anymore, add to that the fact that the guy just takes too many penalties at bad times.

…not to sure what he gives you beyond just being "a guy".

My take as well.

I dunno… I’d still rather have a handful of guys on that list before Moore. He was here before and didn’t really work out, and his linemates are still here. Unless we put him between Dvorak and Stillman for a geriatric line… I don’t see the point. Signing a free agent because we might get a decent return at the deadline just sounds asinine to me. Why not go after free agents that, I don’t know, might help our team 2-3 years from now, when we’ll actually be (realistically) competitive? I guess if the thought process goes that come March, Moore can bring in some young guys that could help our team 2-3 years from now, I can follow it, I just don’t agree with it.

If we’re ignoring ages, Mike Comrie (about same age as Dom) hit 30 goals just a few seasons ago, and 21 a couple years ago. 13 with a horrid Edmonton team last year. Moore’s never had more than 13. If we’re really ignoring age, Craig Conroy had a 48 point year just 2 seasons ago. Kyle Wellwood is younger and much more of an offensive threat (32 G last 2 seasons).

I guess I’m just not sold on bringing in a guy like Moore to simply fill a roster spot. I’d rather see someone else, that fits better in Tallon’s mantra, or give one of the prospects a shot right out of camp.

by Karl Selvig on Jul 5, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Madden, but Moore will be almost as good for a lot less money.

Peter Mueller… could play center if I’m not mistaken, has the size Tallon is looking for and still has no deal with Colorado…
