Panthers sign D Nathan Paetsch
Multiple outlets are reporting unrestricted free agent defenseman Nathan Paetsch has signed a one-year, one-way deal with the Panthers for $525,000.
Paetsch, who's never played more than 63 games in a single season over five years with Buffalo and Columbus, will join a quickly-bloating Florida defensive corps which now includes Bryan McCabe, Bryan Allen, Dmitry Kulikov, Dennis Wideman, Jason Garrison, potentially Erik Gudbranson, and when the wind blows correctly for Amerks fans, Keaton Ellerby.
Call it strictly a depth signing. Or coverage for an as-yet-incomplete future transaction. Or new assistant coach Gord Murphy's got a thing for him (hence the Blue Jackets connection). In any case, he knows his way around Rochester.
Update: Official release here.
Thanks to Pilchino for the tip.

Interesting. He’s not going to turn any heads, but he’s reliable. What happens if both Ellerby and Gubranson are impressive out of camp?
We’ll take Paetsch in Rochester!
Time under Lindy Ruff is always a good sign, especially for a defencemen. Given our depth though I dont like that its a one way contract.
It’s a cheap one-way contract. And we’ll get a lot more out of him than Koistinen for what? A quarter of the cash?

Not a big deal. If a lot of guys do well, we start with seven. It’s not a big deal to pay that seventh guy $525,000 to start. If we’re overloaded for too long, they’ll waive the guy and send him to Rochester.
And they could still be looking at moving Allen…

With you on Allen, but it ain’t gonna be easy.

Indeed! I’m interested to know for what dollar amount it was.
Also, trade Allen to the Kings! ;-) They have been looking for a veteran defenseman so why the hell not? :-)

Probably prefer one without his injury history, methinks.

No more than Pittsburgh or Vancouver

Paetsch is more than just a serviceable 7th defenseman who ALWAYS puts the puck on the net when he shoots (something Andrej Sekera here in Buffalo isn’t so good at 100% of the time), he’s also a fantastic grinder and 4th liner which is where this Sabres fan thinks he should be more than on the blueline.

Philip knows what he is talking about. The coaching staff will have fun picking the top 6, and I hope they put Paetsch in that group. He makes that first pass on the tape more often than most…wait and see. He’s got guts and will bring a lot of qualities to the Panthers. Show what you can do Paetscher!!
Saskatchewan fans will be watching. Guess we have to get the NHL package this year.
Get him on the ICE!

Go Panthers!
I’m just curious to see him (earn) a regular shift, night in and night out. Sounds as if he constantly found himself getting bumped down the depth chart through no fault of his own, presumably.
Skeptical of another defenseman with the ability to play forward (hello Mr. Koistinen), but this appears to be an entirely different story.

Well, Monty played decent fourth line. Actually, he was better than most of the guys we had on the fourth that season.

Montador = severely underrated. Don’t want him back, but still…

these type of signing usually have a good impact
so many times itis the $500,000 other guys that really show up. they come in hungry, and lace up to play when given the chance. Over the season you always need extra D guys to fill in after someone has to sit from blocking a shot, getting a suspension or what have you
