Link: Roster Control continues to be sticking point for Amerks
From Kevin O at the D and C:
(Rochester VP of hockey operations Ted) Nolan says the Amerks won't sign any affiliation deal that leaves them with no input on their AHL roster. The team continues to investigate all possible scenarios for next season and, in an ideal world, could finalize an affiliation by the AHL All-Star break Jan. 30-31.

Goodbye and Good Luck...
No offense intended to anyone in Rochester (we are all brothers/sisters in our love for hockey), but the time for this relationship to end is upon us. I’m sick and tired of reading about what a miserable organization we have every time I click on any Amerks site or read any hockey article coming from Rochester. The simple fact of the matter is that Rochester hasn’t won the Calder Cup in 16 years (LONG before Florida’s influence was a factor), and their problems pre-date their affiliation with the Panthers. To blame their woes on Florida’s “losing culture” is simply ludicrous. The grass isn’t always greener, and hockey fans in Rochester will see that when they get their next affiliation deal… The ONLY partner that makes any sense at all for Rochester’s loyal fans is Buffalo. Unfortunately, the Sabres’ agreement with Portland runs through 2014… For those without a calendar handy, that’s THREE more seasons… The Panthers need to move on, and Rochester, at best, could go independent for one year and then hook up with another team whose AHL affiliation is ending.
Rochester wants control over their roster, and that’s completely understandable. Florida’s new GM wants to be in control of his prospects’ immediate future, and he wants to do it because it is imperative to his blueprint for getting Florida back onto the NHL map… Our relationship is at a loggerhead, and fortunately for both sides, NHL/AHL divorces are pretty cut and dry. Our agreement ends and we (or they) can just walk away…
In a perfect world, the Panthers would introduce a new AHL team in Orlando and our prospects wouldn’t be Gold or Platinum mileage members on multiple airlines when the need for call-ups arises.
Good luck Rochester.
Totally agree
I hear you. It gets to be a bit much sometimes when even their beat writer bashes the team. At times alot of fans and KO in Rochester are pinning all their problems on the Panthers, and it seems that their organization can’t do no wrong. Problem is that there are two sides to every story and I suspect Ted Nolan may be a MAJOR issue in Rochester.
How I would LOVE to have the affiliation in Orlando! The return of the Solar Bears would be pretty cool!

Fully onboard with that.

I grew up outside of Rochester.....
The People there have always considered themselves as children of Buffalo….Their own identity is NILL…..It’s pathetic…..The Bills play preseason at St John Fisher college….This city revolves around SYracuse College sports and Buffalo Pro Sports….They are the upstate pawns with no identity…they never liked the Panthers because their sportswriters always kissed the ass of Buffalo and Florida was the Devil….Not their fault …..brainwashed by their stupid media. I love Rochester….“the city with No sports identity.”…..
I bet it will become a case of be careful what you wish for
Many of the fans in Rochester seem almost intent on going independent, which if I was them I would be scared of. They want to be able to fill the 5 veteran spots themselves, but we would need to have some say I woudl think since we would be recallign them. But they seem to think that 5 or 6 vet players would eb happy to just sign with their independent team with no NHL security at all. Then on top of it they still need to fill the other spots. They complain all we give them is ECHL talent, but that is what they will get at best if they go it alone. They thought Beckford-Tseu was bad (I agree he was) but he may be the best option they have.
And I thought one of the issues the AHL had with Iowa a year or two ago was that the AHL wanted tehm affiliated with an NHL team. May not be a written in requirement, but I got the impression that it was an unwritten one.
The Panthers on the other hand are getting the ship righted. Tallon shoudl start into the next phase of stamping the team come May/June and even in Feb at the deadline. And within a year or two our AHL team will be a powerhouse I am certain. I know for one I am anxious to move on, only cause it would be nice to put yet another part of the Keenan/Martin era behind us. And not sure how it could happen, but to somehow resurect the Solar Bears in Orlando would be about as good as them putting the AHL: team up here in Saskatchewan. Orlando would be pretty unlikely, but the prospect of a fresh start anywhere would be nice, even if it is trading AHL teams with Buffalo and taking over Portland.

I dont blame either side. The offensive production of the Panther forwards has left much to be desired. Can we steal some scouts from Washington? The Panthers know how to draft a good defenseman but look lost when drafting forwards. Look at how the current crop of rookies are doing in the NHL : Couture, Skinner, Stepan, etc. All scoring goals, and these guys were not #1 or #2 picks. While once again, the Panthers have great dman in their lineup for future use….. I am also worried that if Markstrom does not pickup his game soon, the Panthers are going to have to pickup a goalie in the next draft when they need forwards….
Then, there is ROchester. Its not easy to get out of town there. The players dont seem to develop there. And when the Sabres cut ties when it is an hour away from them, there are problems.. Nolan is going to annoy the heck out of any GM. With all of the bad mouthing in the paper, why would another NHL team want to affliate with them….
