Miami Herald: McCabe out "weeks", Clemmer gets nod Monday

"He’s got a broken finger, too (in addition to facial fractures)," Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen said of McCabe. ‘‘He’s our captain, our general in a sense. It speaks volumes of not only his pain tolerance, but his competitive desire to be out there and play with us."

Keaton Ellerby has been recalled from AHL Rochester. More above.

So for the next few “weeks”, half of our top 6 defensemen will have about a combined 4 seasons of total NHL time. Not what you want to hear from a team trying to climb into the playoff pack. Still, with 3 more winnable games on this homestand, and another 5 game stand in mid-February before the deadline (granted, against 5 much, much better teams), you never know.

I think we best set our sights lower. The team is hot now, but they will cool too. Let’s just continue to play hard and whatever happens, happens. Got to give credit to McCabe for being a gamer – I might criticize some of his puck-moving decisions, but he comes to play every night.

Ellerby has played really well in his time up and having McCabe out for a few weeks will give a Tallon a nice indication if we can manage without him after the Trade Deadline or not— I really doubt the Captain goes anywhere, but you never know and I’d rather the team be aware that there is another Bouwmeester situation (the trade or no trade part, I mean) on the horizon.

Agreed. Ellerby has deserved more playing time this year by far but has just been screwed by the number’s game. He really took responsibility for his development beginning last year and has started to blossom into potentially the type of defenseman we all thought he could be. A tough as nails shut down defenseman with some offensive upside.

i just REALLY hope...

that if tallon wanted to trade mccabe and get some considerable compensation that this injury didn’t ruin our chances of getting something nice in return like a prospect and/or picks… :/ but he’s a great guy, great leader, and a team guy.

Clemmer again?

Not that I have a problem with the guy getting the start, especially after two wins, but where does this leave Vokoun? With his second start I thought DeBoer was just playing a hunch, but three in a row over one of the league’s premiere goalies? Something doesn’t add up (or it’s a hell of a hunch).

McCabe has been solid this entire season. He deserves an extension. I see him as the Panthers captain for a few more seasons. I hope the Panthers resign him, he has shown more character than any other Panther in at least what? 5 seasons or more seasons.

I do not see any other Panther as captain of this team, especially guys like Weiss or Booth. They need to worry about scoring and being consistent. Since both are always inconsistent in the beginning of the season.

I agree about Clemmenson starting against the Thrashers, go with the hot goalie until he loses …
