Florida Panthers - General Manager impact on 2010-11 roster

For years the General Manager position of the Florida Panthers organization was a game of musical chairs. In fact in the last decade 7 different men have held the position-- each with their own blueprint and gameplan to take the Panthers back to the Playoffs. So far, none of them have succeeded, but as we all know the building process takes time-- Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither were the playoff aspirations and hopes of this season.

This chart shows the General Manager impact on the current Panthers Roster. While only being with the Club for a short while, Tallon has certainly put his own unique stamp on the roster. That being said, this is still a team largely inflused with Martin's building style and philosophy. Chuck Fletcher and Rick Dudley (now the General Manager of the Atlanta Thrashers) no longer have any impact on the current roster.

One common thread is the collective contribution of head scout Scott Luce, who has had a hand in the past nine entry drafts for FLA.

Unfortunately, he could also be considered as having a HUGE impact by the not-so-great draft picks we’ve made.

It does go both ways, yes.

Don’t forget that the GM has final say, and is free to ignore what the scouts say or pick from the worst of available options. Tallon has good things to say about Luce, so it’s not necessarily his fault. Also, the scouting department was rather thin under Alan Cohen. It has been expanded significantly. You can’t blame Luce for missing quality players because of the size of the scouting staff.

I don’t think anyone’s throwing Luce under that bus. Totally behind you on Cohen stripping the staff.

Oh yes of course Danny— there are a lot of different variables that come into play but I was merely just looking at the surface and which executives were calling the shots when we acquired the players on our current roster.

Fantastic collection, Craig. Including every warm body on the scouting staff would result in a novel.

I dont think that Luce deserves a free pass in all this. We will never know the stuff behind close doors….. But one consistency exists, no drafted 40 goal scorer…Can you think of anyone that was drafted by the Panthers and became a 40 goal scorer? The only 30 goal scorer I can think of is Booth……Or what about a player that is a hidden gem type guy, aka Byfuglien. …

Don’t forget that development is important as well. You can draft the most talented guys in the world, but if your farm system sucks and you have no support for these guys when they make the NHL team, they’re not necessarily going to turn out as expected.

Good point John

And the new GM’s have a lot to do with that— A top pick and centerpiece for a rebuild might not be a centerpiece for someone else, and as such they might put the same resources into their development; one man’s treasure is another man’s garbage kind of deal. Looking back you have to wonder how players like McArdle might have faired if there was some consistancy.

Looking at 40 goal scorers in the last ten seasons, there are eight other teams that drafted no 40 goal scorers: Detroit, Toronto, Nashville, Edmonton, Calgary, Chicago, Los Angeles and St. Louis. In those seasons, Detroit has 2 Cups, Chicago 1 and Detroit, Calgary and Edmonton all had a losing appearance in the Final.

Teams that drafted at least 1 40-goal scorer and no Finals appearances in that time: Atlanta (2), Boston, Buffalo (2), Columbus, Minnesota, Montreal, New York Islanders, New York Rangers (2), San Jose (2), Vancouver, Washington (2).

Drafting guys that put up a lot of goals isn’t all there is to winning a championship. In fact, of the 8 teams to draft player who scored 50 goals in the last 10 seasons, only 4 of them have a Cup in that time (Quebec/Colorado, Dallas, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay). And Dallas’ guy (Jarome Iginla) was already playing in Calgary the year they won.

One comment..

Sexton could be seen partially under the guise of Martin as well…although he did a fine job in tending the position through one of the more tumultuous years in team history.

Agreed. Last year could have been MUCH worse in the hands of a lesser executive.

He did a great job and I was sad to see him go, and it’s no surprise to me that a team like Pittsburgh would hurry to make him a part of the organization.

He’s a longtime friend of the Shero family, so it’s a natural fit.

Has any team had more general managers over this time period?

The Islanders have had more coaches than FLA’s had GMs, I think.

I figure just about no one out there thinks in Kids in the Hall sketches like I do, so I always feel better if I’ve got a link to explain myself. :)
