Monday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum - USA/CAN in WJC, Cats at Canes

Back on the road this afternoon, but a few topics remain open for business...

In addition to this evening's untelevised Panthers - Hurricanes tilt from Raleigh, Team USA takes on Canada in WJC semi-final action; hard to say which may wind up being the superior entertainment value for your attention, but I'm guessing it's the latter. Why? Four reasons: CAN's Erik Gudbranson and Quinton Howden facing USA's Nick Bjugstad and Drew Shore. Enough for me.

In any case, we'll hold a mega-thread (6pm) covering both matches, so feel free to cross-pollinate as you wish.

If news pops up (say, Reinprecht's fate) throw it into the comments.

I know I’m a punk for mentioning it in the shadow of a Vokoun shutout, but just sayin’.

Interesting proposition, but would have to think that we pass. Last year could have been the best he’s ever played, and most likely won’t reach that level again.

Honestly, I’m hoping that Vokoun takes the hometown discount for 2 more years.

Re Vokoun: He might, but this is his last hurrah as far as large, lucrative contracts go.

Yes very hard worker…..And Eric G a very big Hitter also the size of Bjugstad….he seems bigger than most of the other USA players.

Not too surprised, better be a blockbuster though. Its going to be an interesting February 28th and 2 months leading up to it.

Don’t be stunned if David Booth is on the trading block.

OK, then maybe Peabody and Sherman need to give Dale Tallon a ride on the WABAC machine to when Luongo was traded…

Such a stupidly, wildly, speculative comment…

Needless to say, I don’t see it happening.

BTW, when they said no TV, they meant it – not on Center Ice. Have to see if anything is available at game time.

I would kill to be able to land Booth in Pittsburgh but I dont see it happening.

Of course

a Leighton & Markstrom duo would be pretty sweet come next year if we do end up trading Tvo
But lets take the time to lol at TBL, if they’d have waited just two more days they could have had a SCF goalie, but no!

Rather see the reins handed over to Clemmenson, with Markstrom backing him up. Buy out Rhino, try to deal Stillman and Vokoun, and MAKE FRIGGIN SURE we sign Gudbranson.

The return in the Vokoun deal should be quite sweet too. And as much as I love Booth, he’s wildly inconsistent for a first line winger (IMO).

I’d rather not trade vokoun period, but if it happens Markstrom should be NHL (sorta) starter capacity
And I beleive that Gudbranson will be ready next year Hurray!

I’d love to keep him, but this team is in a serious rebuild (FO’ REAL THIS TIME YO), and the assets a top-tier goaltender would return at the trade deadline are worth more than keeping him. We made this mistake with underestimating Craig Anderson’s ability to hold down a starting job. Clemmenson’s track record as a starter is actually pretty decent and with Markstrom learning the ropes, I think it’s worth dealing Vokoun, despite the fact that I love him as a player and will be very sad to see him go.

Gudbranson was ready this year, but the contract issues kept him from playing. I agree with the decision to keep him in the minors for another year, as we would’ve wasted a year of his rookie contract in season one of the rebuild. I just really hope Tallon comes through in negotiations with him next season. He’s going to be a big part of this franchise for awhile; he’ll be one of the best young defensemen to come up in awhile.

All around agree (except andy’s really taking a dive this year as a starter IMO, but that’s irrelevant to the panthers at this point)
