Tuesday Caterwaul - Panthers Open Forum

Back to the grind - and the mean streets of Stuart / Port St. Lucie - but we'll toss out a few topics for discussion:

  • Florida now has five straight games with at least 1 point earned in each
  • In that stretch, the Panthers have outscored opponents 15-12; Sunday's 3-0 SO over NYR being the difference
  • With 38 points, the Cats trail 9th place Carolina by 3...and eighth place Montreal by 7
  • Is Cory Stillman back? A goal and assist coupled with a +2 on Monday would suggest he, well, may be
  • Michael Frolik's 2 assists gave him his fifth multi-point night of the season and second in the past four games
  • Need another reason to watch tomorrow's Panthers-Thrashers match on FS Florida? Bill Lindsay will swap spots with FS South's Darren Eliot for the first half of the second period.

Final stats of local interest from the CAN/USA semi-final game...

Finland (Joonas Donskoi) will take on Switzerland this evening. Team USA will play Sweden Wednesday afternoon for the bronze, while Canada battles Russia for gold later that evening.

Not having to listen to Bill Lindsay is definitely added incentive to tune in!

I have to say that I have been a little giddy watching our fab 4 play in the WJC’s this past week. Howden and Bjugstad look like they could be a serious offensive upgrade coming up and Gudbranson has done nothing to show he didn’t deserve a roster spot this season.

Not going to say Guds didn’t deserve it, but the Cats will be having him for an extra year later now. Can’t fault that decision with what is really a year to see what we have already.

No, I certainly understood and agreed with the decision to send him back down for this season. I was trying to say that he looks like a NHL ready defenseman. Granted, he’s still playing against teenagers, but he’s been one of, if not the, best player on the best teenage team in the world right now. I’m just glad he’s on our side for once.

Oh, I agree. He’s definitely one of the better players there and I think he is ready. Makes me that much more greedy for next year.

There is a certain sense of “greed” about it. I feel it as well.

Tomas Vokoun

I think this was mentioned briefly the other day but I was wondering what people were thinking about his future at the panthers.

At the start of the season I reckoned a trade at the deadline would be the best course of action but now I feeling resigning him would be bettter. I wonder if three years at a slight discount to what he is on now would be possible? That way Jacob could have another year to really warm up in the AHL after his somewhat slow start before joing the panthers full time when Clemmer’s deal expires. I would imagine he would want to be on the roter next year though!

What swings it for me however is the fact I feel we won’t get true value in a trade for our only really elite player in the current market. I feel teams are still not keen on keepers on large contracts and with Roloson in Tampa there are not that many trade partners. I suppose the other consideration is if he wants to stay! In terms of big trades at the dealine I feel McCabe might be a better option.

I would trade Vokoun and any other player if the price is right. I doubt that we could get good value on Vokoun. Not only did TB get a goalie but Nabakov is lurking as a Free Agent and there could be other teams looking to move lesser value goalies. In the end I think we will keep Vokoun and hope that we can resign him in the off season. Now if we could only get a pure goal scorer or two.

Go Cats!!!

I think Vokoun is actually somewhat happy in Florida and I would love to see him for another 2 years while Jacob grows into the game a bit. He is not exactly setting the AHL on fire right now.

We’ll know how happy he is at the end of next month. His NTC will see to that.

I’ d love to see him resign, I think the panthers are really breaking their usual mold of waiting until there is talk of elimination before they step it into high gear and are instead trying to make their playoff push now. If they make the playoffs, I believe he might resign. If not, we’re going to get some nice consolation players in the trade

when’s the earliest we could see Howden/Bjugstad in the NHL? i expect we’ll see Guddy next year in the bigs…but what about the scorers??

by alterego6487 on Jan 4, 2011 6:28 PM EST reply actions

Gudbranson is a scorer!
probably 2-3 years, whats best now is to let them develop in the lower leagues before we start signing contracts, but who knows, if they keep on doing well we could see them next year with erik

Bjudstad is going to need at least another year and probably two. Howden might be a decision after next year. There’s no need to rush these kids. Guds will be here next year, he certainly has the talent to be here already.

by badger737 on Jan 4, 2011 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Gubranson i expect to see up with us next year, and same goes for Howden if he keeps it up, but I don’t expect to see Bjugstad for another 2 years or so since he is in his freshmen year of college i believe… still, with tallon focusing on offense this draft, our problems are finally being solved

Agreed on all three; Bjugstad’s the wild card.

methinks this is a good thing
Tampa is a definite playoff team, and by taking a good player off the hands of Montreal only weakens a sorta playoff team, which is good for us
A Montreal standings tumble is imminent
Wahahaha!!
