Washington:
4-0-0 (8PTS)
Season Series: 0-0-0
Game Time: 7:00 PM EDT
Television: Fox Sports Florida, Comcast SportsNet DC

The Cats meet the Caps for the first of six games this season. The Panthers will be coming off of their win in Tampa Bay's home opener, while the Capitals have been resting a few days after getting off to great start, winning their first four games. Former Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun will face his former team for the first time since leaving this summer to sign with Washington while current Panthers goaltender Jose Theodore may face the Capitals for the first time since leaving Washington two summers ago. There are a few other familiar faces in the lineups for both teams. Panthers forward Matt Bradley will face his former team for the first time since leaving in the summer. Former Panther Dennis Wideman, traded at last season's deadline, will face the Panthers for only the second time since the trade. And former Capital Tomas Fleischmann will play his second game against Washington since being traded to the Avalanche in the middle of last season.

News and Notes

Last meeting

The Panthers beat the Capitals 1-0 in their last game of last season. Tomas Vokoun collected a shutout in his final appearance for the Panthers before leaving in the summer to sign with the Capitals. Former Panther forward and current Rampage forward Bill Thomas had the lone goal in the win.

Last game

The Panthers spoiled a second home opener when they beat the Lightning 7-4 last night. The game featured six special teams goals by the Cats: five power play goals and a shorthanded goal by Sean Bergenheim. The game was even for the first half, but the Panthers slowly took control and silenced the crowd in the third.

Lineup

There have been no lineup changes since the first game, but there is still chatter that goaltender Jacob Markstrom and defenseman Keaton Ellerby will be seeing playing time soon.

Healthy Scratches

  • D Keaton Ellerby?

Starting goaltenders:

Coach Dineen has said he will announce the starter at 5:45 PM today, but Jacob Markstrom is expected to start for the Panthers. Tomas Vokoun will start for the Capitals.

Come on Vokoun!! You owe us a bunch of soft goals that we had to ensure through your Panthers career.

Totally in all my glory today… had to flip the channel to NHL network last night to see the experts eat crow and admit we are a good team. All this talk about gelling and chemistry, and I keep saying to my wife, “If this is forming chemistry and trying to gel…”

I said last year when we hired Dale that we are looking at 3 to 5 years and I have a good feeling he will be getting his Cup and the recognition he deserves. No matter what the teams play this season was going to be like, I was ticking to the 2 to 4 years from now statement. But this team is making me feel much much mroe vindicated! Keep it up boys!! I am pumped that I still have another week of free Center Ice! What a time to get it!

Further proof that this team has really turned the corner to me… We kept checking in and out last night while making supper and the score was 1-1 and 2-1, the first two times and my wife said, “Oh no, thats no good.” My response was, “Nothing to worry about, with this team it will be tied in a few mins.” Next check 2-2…. So we ate, took the puppy for his walk, and came back to catch the Panthers scoring the 5th goal… and took in the rest. Another GREAT NIGHT!

Couple quick random thoughts before getting to work:

- Was cruising through the game thread last night and couldnt help but laugh at the “Edmonton is a prison” Comment. VERY funny stuff!!! We actuallty are hoping to be heading to Edmonton next year once my wife if done school. Never understood why Pronger didnt like it there… LOL…. BIG plus to living in Edmonton… the occasional LIVE Panther game!

- Goaltending tonite: 1) Markys first start or Theos redemption… either way I am excited for the goal that will be starting and totally confident in either of them. 2) I hope the Panthers up front enough past Vokie to show all the “experts” that Tallon made the right call with Theodore.

- I have a feeling that my new fav, Steeger gets another one tonite and that at least one of Skille, Booth or Upshall gets their first goal of the year.

- And am I ever ticked at that guy in our office pool that snuck Weiss out three picks before I was to take him. My master plan for the draft was to draft the best available for 5 rounds, grabb Weiss and then complete the plan by taking Flash as a sleeper and snagging Steeger in the late rounds. I snuck Flash though and got Steeger…. so 2/3 is not terrible.

- Will maybe try to join in tonite on the thread while taking in the game. Got the laptop ready to roll!!

That was published prior to the game, I wouldnt have put a 2-1-0 team in the top 16 either.

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 1G/2A

Yeah, no kidding. Maybe they need to foray a little deeper…
Whatever, if they want to be like that, so be it. This is why I put little stock into the so-called expert opinions. They get too caught up in their flavours of the previous years. New Jersey and Detroit could be awful, but they will still get top billigns on these thigns cause they won 3 or 4 Cups in the past 20 years.

Well those panthers should think that they are playing home game tonight with all that red in the crowd and that chant let’s go caps ( just imagine let’s go cats instead!).

I’m hoping for the best tonight and that the panthers can escape dc with a point and make vokie pay for not resigning with the team.

I hope Markstrom gets the start. I’d like to see what the kid can do. I watched him during the pre-skate on Saturday and thought that he looked like he belonged.

I am super happy about last nights win…
I’m more concerned about tonight’s game. I’m sure someone will tell me the answer to: “when was the last time the Panthers won 3 in a row inclusive of a back to back game”?

I hope we play a fully physical game. One thing about Washington is that they don’t like to be hit. If we grind them all game then we should be able to win the game. We also need to minimize rebounds early for Markstrom so he can build his confidence in his first NHL start. The last thing we need is for him to feel overwhelmed by a very talented offensive team.

by Ad1zzl3 on Oct 18, 2011 2:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a bit nervous with starting Marky tonight. Out of all the teams, I don’t think it’s a great idea for him to face WSH in his first start. I’d rather it be Buffalo on Thurs.

by LAUSMAN on Oct 18, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd prefer someone other than Wash too

for Markstrom’s first start but if he don’t play tonight Theodore will be starting his 3rd game in 4 nights and he’s given up 6 goals in his last about 80 minutes of play. He’s going to be tired tonight against a well rested Capital team and I still believe the best Florida can hope ogut of him for this year is he is serviceable. There’s way too much downside to put Theo in tonight.
