Cats Recap: Clawless Panthers shut out in second straight game, fall to Sabres 3-0

We're only six games into this young NHL season, and the Florida Panthers have been shut out twice already, this time with a pretty listless effort at home against the Buffalo Sabres, who walked out of Sunrise with a 3-0 victory. For the second straight game, the Panthers were shut out and only managed to post 22 shots on Buffalo netminder Ryan Miller. Quite often, the Panthers lacked a spark to their play or any sort of jump to their steps, and this time around the lack of rest can't be used as an excuse. The "vaunted" powerplay was kept under wraps as the Panthers only got one crack at it, but were unable to get one past Miller. All in all, the Sabres really controlled the play, and made the Cats look as though their heads weren't in this game, similar to the effort against Washington earlier in the week.

So... is it time to be concerned yet?

Additional coverage at Die By The Blade

1st

Both teams came out with pretty even efforts, but the first period went to the goalies, with both Miller and Jose Theodore making some good stops. The play was very back and forth and really didn't shift much until the Sabres got a powerplay off of a Stephen Weiss high-sticking call. The Cats were able to kill it off successfully, and the rest of the period the teams traded the occasional chance while trying to control play by clogging up the neutral zone.

2nd

Buffalo came alive in the second, outshooting the Panthers 13-7 and getting goals from Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek. Florida seemed to have a lot of trouble in their zone, repeatedly missing clearing attempts and having a lot of trouble breaking out past the Buffalo blueliners. A brief fight between Paul Gaustad and Matt Bradley was pretty much the highlight of the action for the Panthers, and they weren't really able to get much consistent pressure on the Sabres or really test Miller much.

3rd

Due to some scheduling issues tonight, I missed the third period, but the stats speak for themselves: When the Panthers needed to get pressure to try and tie the game up, they instead were outshot 14-6 and gave up two powerplays to Buffalo, with Vanek scoring on one to get his second of the night and put the nail in the coffin. Can't win games like that.

Observations

  • There's clearly not much effort through the whole lineup from game to game. Guys are disappearing one night and present the next. Head coach Kevin Dineen is going to need to figure out how to get everyone buying in every game, and working hard every game to make sure these no-goal efforts cease.
  • Interestingly, Dineen paired up rookie Erik Gudbranson with youngster Keaton Ellerby as a defensive pairing. I don't think we'll be seeing them together too often though, as they each went -2 tonight.
  • Sean Bergenheim (injury), Ed Jovanovski (injury) and Shawn Matthias (illness) each were out for this game. Whether or not those three would have made much of a difference is a toss-up, though there's no question that Jovanovski's leadership would've been welcomed in the locker room between periods.
  • The Cats called up Tim Kennedy and Bracken Kearns, who both played in the game. This was Kearns first NHL game at the ripe young age of 30. Congrats to him and his 6:30 of ice time.
  • The Panthers seem to have a lot of issues with generating offense against teams who heavily pressure them at the offensive blueline. If they're not able to successfully carry into the zone and maintain possession, they revert to a dump and chase game, and so far that has not panned out well. They may just need more time to gain that chemistry that helps teams establish a puck possession game.
  • Theodore was again great, but with no goal support he's not going to win many games. The Panthers wasted a sterling effort by Jacob Markstrom against Washington, and again by Theodore in this game.
  • Both Bradley and Mike Weaver were cut pretty good, with Bradley getting gashed during his fight with Gaustad, and Weaver's face meeting a part of the net. Both were stitched right up and back on the ice in no time.
  • The Panthers top line was again their best line, but seem to be the only group that can get any kind of pressure. The Panthers second line of Scottie Upshall, Booth and whichever center Dineen wants out there (Tomas Kopecky or Kennedy tonight) were yet again not only unable to put one in the net, but were a bit of a liability defensively, as Booth, Upshall and Kennedy were all -2 on the evening. Booth, as we all know, was a putrid -31 last year, but was on a terrible team. He should improve upon that this season with better linemates, but he's already a -4 and not generating the offense he's known for.
Next up: The Panthers stay at home and face the New York Islanders at 7:30 PM this Saturday. The Cats managed to beat the Isles on Long Island, with Theodore earning a 2-0 shutout. The Islanders have heated up since then, especially young star John Tavares, and will be looking to return the favor. Let's hope the Panthers coaching staff breaks out a dumptruck full of smelling salts and wakes the team up before that. I'm tired of pressing the zero key on my numpad already.

Who would’ve thought that, after losing vokoun and signing theodore and having clemmensen injured, our single only positive for two straight games would be goaltending

Anyone know the extent of Jovos injury?

Let this be a lesson to Dineen. Rotate your defensemen, no point in sitting Ellerby 3 games, putting Jovo in back-to-back games and wondering why Ellerby is rusty and Jovo is injured! We have 7 guys, rotate!

Bench Booth a game, and call up Dadanov. That’s the only way that Booth is going to get the message at this point.

I still see the main issue as team chemistry, and leadership. That’s hard to fix without time to do so. I hope they figure it out sooner than later.

My quick thoughts-

I actually thought Scottie Upshall played his best game as a Panther thus far. He seemed to me to be the only skater for us playing with some emotion. I guess Yahoo’s article about him being a bust must have gotten to him.
The Ellerby/Gudbranson paring was toothless. I belive for the first and second goal they were out there. I also think we can utilize Guds a bit more in the offensive zone. I think it would be fun to see him paired one day with campbell and kulikov with either jovo or ellerby. I still like the chemistry of Kulikov and Ellerby.
Too many “Pretty Pass” attempts. We aren’t the Red Wings (yet). The best games we have had are gritty games where we go after the puck and stay in the front of the net.

A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

Just to note, 5 of the 6 games so far have been against last years playoff teams. No shame in losing to PIT or WSH. 3-3-0 is not a bad place to be right now
2 of the next 5 are against last years playoff teams, two low seeded ones at that, meaning these next games are a better indicator.

I agree that 3-3-0 is a good place to be in but the lack of effort and what I view at times to be lazy or soft play in the past two games, is what has me concerned. I think they played harder in the Pit game they lost. It may just be that the chemistry is not there yet. Lots of missed passes tonight. I can take a loss if the effor is there. Just seemed as though we were in slow motion at times.

There was an element of laziness, but they just seemed hexed. Outside of Theodore, everything that could go wrong did. Just a stinker.

Buffalo is a very solid team from goal out.

Well that was frustrating

It’s like Buffalo watched Washington’s game plan against us and said “Hey, we can do that and do it better.” For most of the game, their defensemen never left the blue line even once we got control of the puck in our zone. They just sat at the line waiting for our weak, aimless chip up the boards trying to clear and kept us pinned in. First two goals came after we tried to break out and repeatedly failed.

I’ll say this… through 6 games, we have 4 even strength goals (if my math is right). Four. And only scored more than 2 once and that was that PP outburst. I know chemistry is going to take some time, and we’ve played what could easily be the top 4 teams in the east for 5 of our first 6. 3-3-0 is not a bad place to be. But… outside of the first game of the year, the other 2 wins come via shootout and a freak 5 PPG game so yea, I’d say it’s time to be concerned.

by kSelvig on Oct 21, 2011 12:54 AM EDT reply actions

I missed the majority of the game due to volunteering with the 50/50 raffle but what little I did see we looked flat. The team could not seem to break into the offensive zone and were tripping over themselves in the defensive zone. Mind you, this was with about 10 min left in the third but from what I gather it was like this all game. Maybe some line shuffling is in order. Maybe you scratch some players for a game or two. all I know is we changed the players, the coach, the uniforms, the paint scheme in the building, and are working on panther land yet we suffer from the same fundamental issues from the past.

by Ad1zzl3 on Oct 21, 2011 1:02 AM EDT reply actions

We knew there would be nights like this, likely many. Still burns when they turn up, though.

This was honestly one of the very worst performances I’ve ever witnessed, and I’m including Hartford in that statement.

Buffalo had sustained pressure, resulting in a circus of missed passes, slips-and-falls, etc.

One thing I’m certain of: Vokoun would have done no better than Theodore in the same situation. Jose was remarkable.

35 saves tied his season high

And sadly I think our best shot on goal was either our first or second shot in the first period when skille (I think) rushed into the zone slipped to the outside of the defender and wound up

Again, Skille was amazing.

Outside the crease, he’s the only FLA player I actually noticed. Box score says he only had 2 hits, but reality told a different tale. Dude was absolutely buzzing.

Versteeg didnt look too bad he just didnt have much support which basically ended up with 2 defenders stripping him of the puck and rushing up the ice

by Rob PKane McMahon on Oct 21, 2011 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea Versteeg, Skille and at times Weiss were the only forwards doing much the entire game. Upshall didn’t show up until late. The coaching staff and players need to find a way to get the whole team playing hard every shift, every night, because lately the issues stem from strong efforts and not chemistry.

by Ryan Meier on Oct 21, 2011 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Tough Love

Props to Jose.. By the mid of the 3rd I thought he must be feeling like Vokoun- seeing plenty of shots coming at him and no one working to get the puck out of the zone. ((Vokie saw 40 SOG last night))

I felt like I was watching the team of last season on the ice, and PLENTY of Buffalo fans there to chant (vomit) for their team. I think that’s the part that sucks the most, not that my Panthers 2.0 is struggling to put the puck in the net, that there is still way too many opposing team fans in my building.

Ok..Dineen and Ramsey pull out the whips and get these guys into shape. A few butts need to feel the wood beneath them!! We are heading into Saturday against a rebounding Islander team who would surely like to respond to us shutting them down for their home opener…
Oh yes and Murphy.. remind the D that the stick stays on the ice!!

We are only in to 6 games, there was always going to be some kinks to sort out and and some chemistry to form with a huge turn over of players. I think the players we got in this team have a bit of character and I still think the future is positive. Goto find there groove.

by pantherdazz on Oct 21, 2011 8:03 AM EDT reply actions

Random thoughts

That was exactly the kind of performance the Panthers didn’t need as they attempt to win back fans. That was way too reminiscent of the last decade of garbage.

The offense is now officially a big problem. shutout in back to back games… ugh. Throw out the game in Tampa and we are talking about 6 goals (plus another counted for the shootout) in 5 games. That’s pretty pathetic.

The only stat David Booth is adding to his resume is in the minus column.

Gudbranson needs to go back to the OHL. He is not quite ready yet. Other than fighting he has been a non factor.

And to think it was the goaltending we were worried about.

I guess 3-3 is OK as chemistry is being worked out but I don’t find solace after losses by saying the team that beat them last night made it to the playoffs last year. The chemistry thing isn’t a legit excuse for too much longer and know the key to this season is going to be beating up on the average to bad teams but there a lot of good teams in the league so they have to be able to beat teams with winning records here and there.

Despite all the depth the Panthers added to the organization (which was an impressive feat) they are still lacking true first line forwards which always puts them at a disadvantage against the better teams in the league. Our top line is still in my mind a second line on an very good to elite team. I know they are trying to develop them in house but the panthers still need a center that can put up 80+ points and at least one winger capable of scoring in the 40 range. Until they have those players staying comfortably over .500 is going to be a struggle.

by Todd Little on Oct 21, 2011 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

I would say that top line has shown a lot of potential. But doing “cute” plays look nice when you score but when you don’t they look horrible. They need to have the mentality of attack the net first. Remember DeBoer last year saying this team didn’t have a killer instinct. Someone needs to step up and provide that. The rest will follow. I am thinking Campbell may be that person. In games that we have won or even the Pit game when he was in attack mode and not dump and chase mode we had pressure. The skills that Steeger, Flash, Weiss, Upshall have will naturally come out when this happens. When you force a nice a play when not needed well that can be a disaster.

A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

by trinidaddy on Oct 21, 2011 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Don’t get wrong Versteeg, Weiss and Flash are all good players and as a line show nice potential but none of them have ever put true #1 line stats (yet). Until the Panthers get or develop a couple of “elite” forwards making the playoffs is always going to be a fight.

by Todd Little on Oct 21, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I only saw the last 8 minutes or so, when Dineen was double shifting the top line and Skille-Goc-Kopecky, but it was not pretty. Versteeg got the puck in deep a couple of times, but then they were overwhelmed by Sabres. When Booth’s line did get out there, Upshall put some pressure on, but Booth just looked lost.

The end of that game showed what it is I like about Lindy Ruff. The Sabres played that game to the last second. Even up 3-0 at the end, he took a timeout on an icing. And to be fair, so did Kris Versteeg, who got the puck in the offensive zone and got a decent shot on Ryan Miller with like 30 seconds left, but it didn’t look like he had a whole lot of support.

"We don't need the designated goon. Those fights aren't even fun to watch." -Mike Milbury
