Not surprised, Carter is a good player.
I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 2G/3A

I’ve got to disagree. Carter was a banger, nothing more, and was being outplayed in a major way by Skille, Mattias and others. It’s a reasonable move for the Devils, who need a cheap person to play a fourth, maybe third line center position, and he already is familiar with Pete. So I’ll gladly take the waiver fee for him. Wish him luck, but we have better players now and he had no real future in a Cats sweater.

I had high hopes for him at the start of training camp. Thought he would have been our most improved player. The guy loved to hit but took way too many penalties so far this season. I wish him the best of luck. On another subject, how good has Skille been!
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.
bad and good from this
The downside is that he’s gone and therefore unavailable for SA or the Panthers. The upsides are:
1) He was beat out by better players. This is all that really matters.
2) He wasn’t claimed on re-entry waivers later on, which would have meant the Panthers couldn’t have had him when they needed him AND would be on the hook for half his salary.
I think waiver claims around the league will get more frequent until the next CBA.
It's okay!
As much as it sucks, Bradley has kind of taken over what once was Carter’s role, I feel.
Bradley was hitting people like crazy on Monday. In fact, him or Upshall delivered a HUGE hit close to the end of the game on Monday.
Nailed it, Weez.

Bradley needs to keep doing that. I’d like to see Guds doing it too.
The best thing about that play is he takes that guy off the puck so Kennedy can recover it and then gets himself towards the net to be in position to grab that pass from Matthias. Just great positioning and puck movement. They did everything but score on that shift.

Can’t say this wasn’t coming. Its sad to see him go and not get anything. IMO, there should be compensation from the team that claims the player based of of the players salary. Or at least like baseball where you have the option of keeping him, trading, or releasing the player. To me this is wrong as a player could just need some work and a team have long term plans for him but lose him for nothing, like we did Grabner. This needs to be fixed.

It’s a balancing act. The waiver rule exists to keep teams from stashing ringers in the minors. There is an exemption for younger players, to benefit the teams, but with the older players, the rule benefits the players more. For Carter, he gets to stay in the NHL, at least for a while. The Panthers likely would have kept him in SA for the rest of the year.

Understood why its in place but still believe if a player was good enough for a team to claim then they should have to pay for him in one capacity or another. We lost a future star in Grabner who was “not ready” for the Panthers. We try to send him down and got nothing to show for it. Its a ridiculous system. The islanders got a to flight player with out having to trade or bid against someone. He just fell into their lap. Meanwhile We got nothing to show for the Ballard trade. (not mentioning Bernier) No other support, except for Football who does not have a minor league system, would a team not have an option whether to trade, release, or keep the player.

Actually, the Panthers get cash for him. That’s how waivers work. Its like $1500 or $5000 or something in between, but its something.
As for the Ballard trade, the Panthers got a first round pick many expect to contribute as much as Grabner should have. Some players just don’t fit into a system or play for a coach like they should. That’s the breaks. And baseball’s waiver system works precisely the same way as hockeys. Players get waived and another team can claim him. If he clears waivers, then the team has the option of keeping him, trading him, sending him to the minors, or releasing him.

While yes we acquired the first round pick, that’s all we got for Ballard. So essentially we traded Ballard for a first round pick. And traded Grabner for…nothing. Doesn’t add up. Also not that it matters in the realm of hockey but here is a link of understanding how MLB waiver wire works.

$3375 to $90,000 depending on position and number of years on a contract ($3375 is over 9 years, $90000 is for goalies with less than 2 years). $125 for unconditional waivers, but those are only used prior to a buyout.
Should have been $26,250 for Carter and $67,500 for Grabner. Would have been the minimum for Reinprecht had he been picked up.

That’s the incentive for GMs to be careful building their roster. You’re limited to 23 players on the active roster and limited in movement between leagues. Would it be fair to the players if you could sign too many and then just stash a bunch of them in the minor leagues with no opportunity for them to stay in the NHL. Steven Reinprecht didn’t sign a 3 year deal to play in the AHL. He’s in the AHL, but at least 29 other teams were given the opportunity to put him on their roster and he got that opportunity to be claimed. Same with Carter.
Guy was on a one-year two-way contract. You really think he was in the long-term plans?
