Even more awesome, with a win tomorrow, the Panthers will be tied with the Capitals for first place

They still have the tiebreakers though.

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 3G/4A

I seem to remember an unfortunate tie breaker where tied for 8th place means 9th place

I predicted before the season that the Panthers will make the playoffs this season. Now ten games in, my prediction looks stronger than before. (I was told I was crazy when we were talking about this on the Ranger blog.) See you guys at some games.

Love that our powerplay is rated 5th, such a turnaround from last year. Skille really deserves to put one in the back of the net, he’s doing all the little things right

Thought the same, re: Skille. Snakebitten right now.

Not trying to sound stupid but how long does a snakebitten player get the ice time he is getting before doing all the right things equals pucks in the back of the net?

by Robert Wright on Oct 30, 2011 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

No one knows.

Skilles probably been asking that question his entire career.

Not stupid at all. A prudent question.

He’s been working his tail off, doing as Grav said above “all the little things right”. He’s not a natural scorer, and nor was Dineen until he consistently worked his tail off, utilizing every available tool in the shed. Cliche? Yes, but that’s the deal.

Even hamfisted gets goals and assists with how hard he’s working. I think Dineen is going to let him play and let the hard work payoff.

What's gotten into

Kulikov? Six assists this year. If he keeps that pace and plays 70 games(What he averaged for his two other years in the NHL) this year, Dmitri will have more assists in 2011-12 than he had in 09-10 and 10-11 combined.

Kuli #s

First six games: 2a, -2, 4 blocks, 6 SOG

Last 4 (i.e. since Booth trade): 4a, +5, 5 blocks, 12 SOG

UNREAL.

my comments after the first five were
OK, so many of the people I talked to about the Panthers asked me how to gauge the start. I said to look at the entire season in 5 game and 10 game segments. So of the first 5 I saw 2 I though we should win, 1 I thought we could win and 2 I thought would be hard to win. So i was hoping to be at worst 2-2-1 in the first five. Well, we won the two games i though we should win (Isles, TB at home…) won the 50-50 game (TB on the road) and did actually lose the 2 I thought we might (Pitt and Wash) so all in all I am quite pleased with the Panthers so far because even in the losses I thought we played well. Now onto the next 5. I see about the same thing, 2 we should win (Isles at home, Ott on the road) 1 we could win (Buffalo at home) and 2 that are a toss up (MTL and Buf on the road). So let’s see what happens. and LET’S GO PANTHERS!!!!

So let’s see, we blew it against Buffalo at home, then we took care of the Isles at home, so we are +1 and -1 on my predictions, then we blow the Ottawa game in painful fashion BUT we win BOTH of the toss up games. So once again we go 3-2 in the last five and are 6-4 in the first 10. I said before the season that after 10 I want to be right around .500 figuring something around 5-4-1 would be a good start. So I am very happy with the 6-4 record and realize it really could have been 6-3-1 seine for 2.5 seconds in Ottawa. The team has shown the ebbs and flows I expected in the first 10 as they have been alternately brilliant and equally exasperating. Still, old players are stepping to the fore (Garrison, Kulikov) new players are really shining (Versteeg) and our best players are truly playing their best (Campbell, Weiss) and leading the charge.

Lets Go Panthers!!!!!

by catfan927 on Oct 30, 2011 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

I am still on the fence so far. At times, they look like a completely different team, hustling, making the smart plays/passes; other times, they look like last year’s team (albeit with different players) – lazy passes, no hustle, etc.

I have been seeing more of the positive in the past few games, though. 10 games in, and I am still not sure what to think. Because of past performance, I have become weary of becoming too excited after a stretch of a few good games. I would like to see some consistency in a larger sample size first. I do have to say that I am more optimistic this season that they can do it. And Skille is surprising the hell out of me with his hustle.

I imagine Dineen is working hard at whipping the boys into shape. I hope they keep up their good play and stay in the upper half of the league standings, instead of mired in the middle, where the difference between a playoff position and early tee times is a careless SO win-loss.

by Kellner21 on Oct 30, 2011 10:09 PM EDT reply actions

I hate to say it, but you’re going to see lazy passes and such from every team in the league. We just didn’t notice it as much because the Panthers have done it constantly for years. The key is minimizing those nights and it’s a lot easier to do when you’re winning and there’s a reward for that hustle.

Ten games in, not enough of a sampling imo to get a good feel of the team, but results have been good in the standings. Some of the off season acquisitions have produced and some are still tryin to find their niche. 10 games is a little too quick to hit the panic button on the ones who aren’t, but its good to see guys like Versteeg and Campbell (still don’t and won’t agree with the contract) producing already. Markstrom is looking good in net, but time will tell if he’s ready to be the go to starter. Still a lot of questions needing to be answered before expecting playoffs, but they’ll be a pleasant surprise, even if I don’t think they’re ready for a push.

by MrOmnipotent on Oct 31, 2011 4:26 AM EDT reply actions

Campbell is the best offensive defense man SoFLA has ever seen. The man deserves to be paid like the elite player he is. 3 years down the road it might be a problem but at the moment , its refreshing and bona fide crazy. Over the course of the season, Soup by himself, is worth at least 8 points. Impact player.

Is the league gollowing up on the Sturm hit? At the time it seemed a given that Sturm would face Shannaban but since the game I haven’t heard anything about it. (not that I ever want to see a Panther in one of those videos at all)
