Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Wednesday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum

Both GR and Harvey X have reported throughout the morning via Twitter that Panthers left wing Sean Bergenheim has been skating today, much of the time alongside Mike Santorelli and Tomas Kopecky, with Scottie Upshall heading to a reconstituted - and expensive - fourth line (Upshall, Shawn Matthias and Matt Bradley).

Presumably this means Tim Kennedy's clock on the left side has run out...for the moment. Marco Sturm's contract - the final year of it - makes him the only other option to sit, but would be a remarkable situation in light of what was given up to acquire him. Though still settling in with the club, Sturm is clearly the more explosive player, while Kennedy has that energy label on his side. Depends on game-by-game need, one would assume.

On the defensive end, what to do with sparsely-utilized Keaton Ellerby?

Conflicting reports

PBPost is reporting, Garrison “hasn’t measured his shot since juniors, 10 years ago” and implies he is surprised he has the heaviest shot on the team. But Billy n Goldie are always mentioning his cannon and how its assumed he has the hardest shot in practice. I think its not even a competition n hope they ‘measure’ it soon.

The way that fourth line has been playing, they should be the third line.

The nice thing is

Teams can’t overlook the lower, energy lines because they can def. bring the offense to the table

the first line is the only line scoring. Lines 2,3 & 4 haven’t done jack yet as far as scoring goes.
A lot of guys are playing hard but it’s not resulting in any offense.

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree too. Maybe Kopecky should hang out at the boards more and will find his new best friend is Mathias.

P.S. booth has done nothing yet in Vancouver, he is a -2 after 4 games no goals.

Not much of a sample size; give him a full season with Kesler and see his numbers rise.

Personally, I have not been overly impressed by Jovo & Guds. I’m sure I am wrong but they seem to be the pair who are on ice for GA. I’d be happy to let either of them sit a few games and get Ellerby in. I’d like to see some of my D men hit somebody once in a while, make a few forwards pay for trying to get in our end :-)

I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G4A 11/1

i think Jovo has been pretty disappointing. Gudbranson is still learning, he gets a pass for now, but i would like to see him get on the scoresheet already!

by alterego6487 on Nov 2, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Got to agree on both counts. I think Jovo has been fairly pedestrian and Guds gets a pass because he’s a rookie and learning his role. He’s not made glaring, ridiculous mistakes, but has had his growing pains. He will get better. However, I do think that we’re making a mistake essentially benching Ellerby. I think him, Jovo and Guds should be rotating as the third pair every two nights, unless injury forces a change.

by badger737 on Nov 2, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I have not been impressed with Jovi cop at all. WhAt is glaring to me is to see Kuli lead in hits instead of Jovo…. Jovo and Guds got to start being hitting or blocking machines out there.

by Hawkseye on Nov 2, 2011 3:10 PM EDT via iPhone app up reply actions

I agree on Guds, but not Jovanovski. The defense has been alright, and he’s done his share.

by Alexander Calloway on Nov 2, 2011 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Jovo is Nogo....

That half hearted…lazy attempt by Jovo the last game to clear the puck out of the zone…I believe it was during the 1 st period last game……was disgusting…..the puck flew past Teddy a few seconds later………He’s not hitting…he’s not clearing….and I hope he’s not out there to teach Guds how to play defense.

by LAUSMAN on Nov 2, 2011 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

never really understood the Jovo signing. Mostly due to the length of the contract. They would have been better off signing someone a little younger. The Upshall deal is looking like a bad one too. Hopefully he’ll turn it around soon. I guess when you sign that many new guys some of them were bound to not work out. Still surprised how so many of the forwards are not scoring. If the first line keeps it up and some other guys can get going the Panthers are going to pretty hard to handle.

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

The first line is definitely carrying the bulk of the scoring load however other than the guys with less than a handful of games (Sturm, Santorelli) everyone has contributed something. TK has 6 points, the defense is chipping in regularly, and so far we have had a different player with the GWG in each of our wins….

by catfan927 on Nov 2, 2011 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

something isn't enough

too many forwards with 1 or zero goals. Kopecky is the only non first liner who has helped the offense. Yes, the D (mainly Garrison) has helped but a bunch of forwards need to start finding the net on a more regular basis. Out of the bottom three lines Dineen has to piece together a second line that can actually score some goals and help out the first line.

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

following up my point

first line: 14 goals / Garrison: 5 goals / rest of the team: 9 goals

not good enough

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea that’s a scary disparity right there. But good for Gary!

Getting Bergy back and moving Kennedy down should help a bit.

by Ryan Meier on Nov 2, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the parts are here to assemble a good second line just a matter of Dineen putting the right three together and them finding a spark. I think getting Samuelsson healthy will help and I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Dadonov at some point this season especially if goals stay hard to come by.

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d like to see:

Upshall-Santorelli-Dadonov
Bergenheim-Goc-Matthias

Dadonov

Just get him in the mix somewhere, he was developing a nice touch before the injury last year.

not making excuses for him but maybe he’s rounding back into shape after the injury or maybe he’s not happy being down there and it’s affecting his game. Either way he needs to get it in gear and earn himself a call up. We need the Dadonov that was playing so well last year back on the Panthers.

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

+3. He’s not big and flashy and won’t put up a ton of points, but he logs tough minutes against tough players and top lines and is generally a stalwart back there. Check out his zone diffs. and relative Corsi and you’ll see his true value.

Weaver is also a +5. I’d like to see Ellerby too but the only one who can be benched is Jovo.

at this point I think any trades of NHL roster players should bring back scoring help. the Panthers are doing well enough on picks and prospects.

by Todd Little on Nov 2, 2011 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Panthers could always use more picks and prospects though. San Antonio is off to a rough start. I would really like to see the Panthers do a package of some sort and bring in a good winger and a prospect . Perhaps, Columbus (bad start…ready to call it a day yet? )or Philly (injuries) would be the place to look.

by Hawkseye on Nov 2, 2011 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t know if I’d trust any of CBJ’s propsects – seriously…how many have worked out, historically, and remain in the league? Their drafting has been worse than FLA’s.

They have a pretty good system. Ryan Johansen is their best prospect, and I’m familiar with him in his WHL days in Portland. Wouldn’t mind getting Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault, their top goalie prospect, but not that’s going to happen.

true, you can never really have enough but right now they seem to have some immediate needs on the big league roster.

At the beginning of the season we were crashing the net regularly with a few different players and then it dropped off. No idea why it dropped off but I think its time for a few forwards to step up and do it.

You want your biggest bodies there, guys that are tough to move but have the hands to pop in rebounds or trash laying in the crease. Matthias, Bradley, Kopecky…. those are the names that fit perfectly in that position.
