Pro Minor Hockey Returns to Orlando

Apparently Orlando will now again host a professional (albeit minor league) hockey team.

Star-divide

Chris at Icethetics included this news in a post about happenings in October.  Evidently the ECHL has approved an expansion team in Orlando playing at the Amway center where the Orlando Magic play, or would play if not for the NBA lockout.  This is pretty cool news for Florida hockey fans.  It makes me wonder about the likelihood of the Panthers changing affiliation from the Cyclones to this new as yet unnamed team.

Two of the owners evidently have ties to other teams. One worked for the Devils, as Lou Lam comments in the article, and another worked for the Crunch in Syracuse. They’ll more likely affiliate with Tampa. If Carolina didn’t own the Blades, Panthers affiliating with Blades and Lightning with the Orlando franchise would have made for a good built-in rivalry.

Makes me sad I just moved out of Orlando, but good to know there’s an option when I visit family there. Wonder if Orlando City’s first year success in the USL (minor soccer league) helped any. They were averaging about 6,000 fans a game, easily tops in the USL and had over 10,000 for the playoff games.
